Vlasov Yuri Petrovich personal life. Weightlifter Yuri Vlasov: biography, family, sporting achievements

Yuri Vlasov biography

Yuri Petrovich Vlasov was born on December 5, 1935 in the city of Makeevka, Donetsk region, Ukraine, in the family of a Soviet intelligence officer and diplomat Pyotr Parfenovich and the head of the library Maria Danilovna.

Education

In 1946, Yuri Vlasov entered the Saratov Suvorov Military School, from which he graduated in 1953 with honors. During his studies, he repeatedly proved his superiority in many sports disciplines. Vlasov completed the male category in athletics, he pushed the shot, threw a grenade and easily conquered the snowy mountains on skis.

By the age of 15, Yuri's own weight was about 90 kg. At the same age, he began to be interested power types sports.

After graduating from the Suvorov Military School, Vlasov entered the Zhukovsky Moscow Air Force Engineering Academy, where he graduated in 1959 with a red diploma and the military specialty "Aviation Radio Communications Engineer". It was while studying at the academy that Yuri began to engage in weightlifting, which he had previously only read about in books.

Sports career

In the spring of 1957, training under the guidance of Evgeny Nikolaevich Shapovalov, Yuri Vlasov fulfilled the standard of a master of sports in weightlifting, becoming the USSR record holder in the snatch and clean and jerk. Later, he set a number of all-Union rank records, thanks to which he secured a place in the list of the best weightlifters in the Soviet Union. In the same year, at competitions in Lvov, Yuri was injured in his leg and spine. The support of his wife and friends helped the athlete to return to the ranks again and achieve incredible results in iron sports.

In 1959, Yuri Vlasov was awarded the title of Honored Master of Sports of the USSR. In the same 1959, the athlete successfully performed at the World and European Championships, where the champion pushed the barbell weighing 197.5 kg and collected a fantastic 500 kg in triathlon.

1960 Olympics in Rome

In August 1960, at the Rome Olympics, Yuri Vlasov fought his main heavyweight rivals, American athletes Norbert Szemansky and Jim Bradford. Then Vlasov became absolute champion, breaking the records of Paul Anderson, the results of which at that time seemed unattainable for at least a few more decades.

Thanks to his successful performance, Vlasov was recognized as the best athlete in the 1960 Olympics and received the "Strongest Man on the Planet" award.

1964 Tokyo Olympics

Yuri Vlasov came to the 1964 Olympics as the absolute world record holder. His main opponent was teammate Leonid Zhabotinsky. Then Vlasov did not yet know how dramatic the struggle on the Olympic platform would be for him. In the bench press, Yuri Vlasov set a world record, having overcome the bar of weights of 187.5 kg. Already by the third movement, he was approaching the leader, and it was clear to many who would win, but then the incredible happened. In the first and second approaches in the clean and jerk, Vlasov submitted to the weight of 205 kg and 210 kg, respectively. In the second approach, Zhabotinsky ordered 217.5 kg, but pulling the bar just above his knees, he dropped it. Vlasov decided that Leonid had given up, and in the last approach he went for a world record - 217.5 kg, but the attempt was unsuccessful. Zhabotinsky, in turn, went to the third approach and lifted a seemingly unbearable 217.5 kg over his head, as a result of which he bypassed Yuri Vlasov by 2.5 kg and became the Olympic champion.

Later, in one of his books, Vlasov wrote that Zhabotinsky used a tactical trick. After the first approach in the clean and jerk, Leonid in the warm-up hall began to complain that he was not feeling well and, most likely, would be filmed.

Acquaintance with Arnold Schwarzenegger

At the very peak of Yuri Vlasov's career, at one of the world championships, 15-year-old Arnold Schwarzenegger approached him between sets. Then Yuri, being excited by the competition, gave parting words to Arnold not to quit and love sports. Many years later, the legendary bodybuilder sent his photo to the no less legendary weightlifter, which he signed: “To my idol Yuri Vlasov.”

End of competitive career

Being depressed by the result of the Tokyo Olympics, Yuri Vlasov left hard training to the side and devoted himself completely to literature. Some time later, due to financial problems, the athlete resumed training with iron. A year later, in 1967, at the Moscow Championship, Yuri set his last world record, for which he received 850 rubles.

In 1968, Vlasov officially announced the completion professional career and retired from military service, leaving behind 41 USSR records and 31 world records. The following year, Vlasov was awarded the Order of Lenin, in 1964 he received the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.

Yuri Vlasov as a writer

Since 1959, Yuri Vlasov began to print essays and stories. After 2 years, he became the winner of the second prize in the competition for the best sports story 1961. The outstanding weightlifter went to the 1962 World Championships no longer as a competing athlete, but as a special correspondent for the Izvestia newspaper.

The first collection of short stories - "Overcome Yourself" was published back in 1964, shortly before the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

In 1973, after 7 years of working with KGB data archives and eyewitness interviews, the book “Special Region of China. 1942-1945". Vlasov published this edition under the pseudonym Vladimirov, in memory of his father.

Social activity

From 1985 to 1987, Yuri Vlasov headed the USSR Weightlifting Federation. In April 1987, athletic gymnastics (bodybuilding) was recognized by the State Sports Committee of the USSR as a sport, in view of which a federation was formed, the first president of which from 1987 to 1988 was Vlasov.

In 2005, Yuri Vlasov celebrated his 70th birthday. In one of his interviews, he said that shortly before his 70th birthday, he coped with a weight of 185 kg. Yuri Petrovich also admitted that despite his age, he devotes 2-3 times a week to “iron”.

"Burning Spirit"

(Alexey Samoilov, article from the magazine "Aurora" No. 9, 1985. Recorded on 01/09/1986)

February 21, 1983 the ambulance took Yuri Petrovich Vlasov in CITO with acute pain in the spine. There he had an intervertebral disc removed in the lumbar spine and inserted 20 see stainless steel fixing plate. Doctors forbade Vlasov to sit, let alone stand. However, Yuri Petrovich began training exercise with dumbbells, first lying down, then sitting and standing, necessarily combining them with psychological auto-training (self-hypnosis).

"Formula of will: BELIEVE!"

(Extracts from the book by Yu.P. Vlasov were made in the spring of 1986)

...Strength is to make the spirit glow! G. Derzhavin I was born in 1935., V 1943., at the age of eight he went bald from hunger, with 1946. By 1953. Studied at the Saratov Suvorov Military School 1953. By 1959. studied at the VVA (Air Force Academy) them. Zhukovsky. IN March 1959 I am one of the three strongest heavyweights of the USSR. IN 1960. raised in Lviv big weight on the platform, trying to hold him, I felt a crunch and a sharp pain in the lumbar spine (then the pain disappeared). In April 1959 set a world record in the clean and jerk at the Leningrad House of Officers. In the spring of 1964 a series of colds with high fever, autumn 1964 published his first book overcome yourself". TO 1969. I'm losing weight 30 kg up to 110 kg at height 187 cm, but in winters it began to freeze. From the beginning of 1968 began to manifest: cardiac arrhythmia, headache, shortness of breath, lethargy, pressure dropped to 80/70. WITH late 1969. I stopped training seriously, became grouchy, irritable, flabby in body. WITH 1970. began to get sick often with flus, gums began to bleed, pains in the spine became more frequent, pains appeared in the liver, chills became more frequent. Summer 1970 doctors have diagnosed inflammation of the gallbladdersrya. Headaches, weakness in the body and muscles intensified (I could not lift more than 5-6 kg - pain in the head, muscles, sweating). I began to be in great need of money, their constant shortage made me irritable. Autumn-winter 1970-1971(I was 36 years) I tried to understand and realize: what happened to me? Why am I falling apart V linen And pits? I began to seriously look for the causes of the disease in myself, carefully analyzing all my 36 summer life. I then thought that the reason just one but doctors can't identify it. In the end, I came to the conclusion: I have worn out nervous system! I deprived myself of all earthly joys (old acquaintances, entertainment, broad activities ...), closed myself in and began to train my will. I clearly understood: to be cured, one must unconditionally believe in the method of treatment e niya. The story of Mikhail Zoshchenko helped me in this " Returned pierOdost". Before 1972. the pains are progressing, it became difficult to walk, I was all in search of gaining strength of mind. In the same 1972. publishing a story White instantOvision", and in 1976. - his 1st book-novel " salty joys". IN October 1976 while hunting, I get a bad cold (I spent the night in the forest at a temperature -8 ° WITH), after this overnight stay, the usual recovery did not follow. IN February 1977 skiing at temperature = -20 ° WITH, I fell through the ice up to my shoulders, and I get warm only after an hour. A month later, I fell ill with the flu, after which alternations began to appear: a cold - recovery, sweating, weakness, chills, coughing. Treatment with antibiotics alone does not help! Since October 1977. I, despite the ongoing illness, start daily physical exercises with dumbbells, overcoming pain, especially headaches. I sleep only with sleeping pills, pains intensify in the entire spine, sharp pains began to appear in cervical region, I'm starting to lose my teeth, and I stop believing in physical exercises, constant training. I give my all Sports Equipment, speech impairment began to appear. I self-diagnose: tuberculous sciatica (my mother suffered from it), but this diagnosis of mine is not officially confirmed by either doctors or medical books! I begin to believe in some unknown disease, leading to the loss of vitality in the body. In medicine, I completely lost faith! Overnight summer 1977 I clearly understood: it is necessary to completely change the attitude towards my life, my views on the world around me, all the troubles and misfortunes! .. I understand: - I found the way of my healing - it is necessary to put the spirit and will over everything! From the very first weeks after the summer of 1977. I, to the surprise of everyone and myself, began to recover. For the autumn and winter of 1977. I fully I refused to take all the medicines, as they brought chaos to the reaction of my body to my perception of the symptoms of the manifestation of the disease. I clearly understood: No need to treat O sickness - and the reasons that cause it! "The first thing I did: since September 14, 1977. I completely gave up sleeping pills and for six months got used to sleeping without them every night. Second - since October 1, 1977 I began to take daily warm baths with a temperature = +37 ° WITH. Third, he began to take daily walks on fresh air in any weather. All this was accompanied constant self-hypnosisinto firm faithin victory over disease! However, with the new, optimal for me method of treatment, I allowed two serious mistakes: - I decided to harden with cold procedures according to the method of a German pastor Kneipp and a month later felt pain in the joints. - I've been on a hunger strike following the American Diet Methods. Bragg four months in a row, after that not only lost weight by 8 kg(before 95 kg), but spasmodic phenomena appeared in the vessels of the brain, leading to even greater headaches. All this time I thought endlessly about ways to heal the spine. I realized that past workouts of the body will not help, qualitatively new, daily workouts are needed, using exercises on pain limits and with a constant, daily increase in them little by little, while not forgetting to constantly engage in self-hypnosis of the usefulness of these exercises for my body. From the end of April 1978. I started these new workouts, doing them daily 40 minutes to sweat, overcoming pain and laziness. I did these exercises in the morning after washing my face. From the beginning of May 1978 I began to travel out of town and in my underpants took sun and air baths. I bought myself a bike and I'm starting to combine home workouts with cycling. From the end of June all training began to be carried out not in the apartment, but in the fresh air with dumbbells and a bicycle. In July I tighten my back muscles. I determine the cause: I'm in too much of a hurry to increase physical activity ! From August I am revising my training methodology in the direction of increasing their time to one hour and the number of repetitions, increasing the weight of the dumbbells. In September sustained pain in elbow joints and in the wrists, which continued for the next year. It's true: " The best is the enemy of the good!" From August to the end of October 1978 I make bike trips in two days on the third 20 km. Since November I once again change my workouts, increasing their time up to one and a half hoursin a day. I start to walk quickly for a while (I can’t run yet), I began to mentally read the will formulas (mantras) in between exercises (I immediately felt the benefit and effect from them). However, all winter 1978-1979 I felt worse than in the summer, but I did not reduce the intensity of training. During the winter, he engaged in recollective psychoanalysis of his past. From the beginning of March 1979 I began to treat my liver (I was diagnosed with: hepatitis ) oxygen therapy according to the methodology I.R. SOKOLINSKY.

" (Patriarch Sergius Starogorodsky) Name Yuri Vlasov known to the whole world. Outstanding athlete of the 20th century, writer, politician, Hero of the Rome and Tokyo Olympics, 5-time world champion, 6-time European champion, author of more 30 -ti world records, author of dozens of books, including those published in many countries of the world and translated into the languages of these countries: " Justice Force", "fiery cross", "Rus' without a leader", "Special Region of China"and others. For half a century, dozens of idols of the earth gave Yuri Vlasov love, respect, recognition. These are they - Yuri Gagarin, Marilyn Monroe, Gina Lollobrigida, Arnold Schwarzenegger- called him " king in theOLefty of Kings". Today, dear readers, Yuri Petrovich Vlasov- the guest of honor of our newspaper. He is replying to a letter that is very upsetting, but hopefully will help many. Here is its full text: "Dear Yuri Petrovich! Our dear man! For many years we have been following your fate - both heroic and tragic, etc.ered. in the paper"Bulletin of healthy lifestyle "No. 7 for 2001. I read an interview with you" Overcome Yourself. "What you had to overcome in life, whicheto cut fame than to pay for it and be reborn again with the "strongest" spirit, body and mind, beyond the power of ordinary people. You are the only warrior in the field! And how can we live in a small, lost in the forests, military town, which has now lost its former purpose? People are abandoned and no one needs them. My old parents and many relatives live in Leningrad, my friends live in other cities. But none of them can find anywhere that helped you to be reborn again and again and live strong and healthy. You talked about this very convincingly, and I can’t help but believe you: for us you will always remain a symbol of courageous nobility and honesty. But all these "miracles" are probably only in Moscow. Is it possibleOsti getthere will never be before. Changes in the country have separated people, and many - forever. Once I listened to Elena Malysheva's program about herbs and capsules "Vascular Doctor", but she doesn't send anything either. Circumstances force us to hate Moscow. What have we lived to ... In one of your books you quote the words of the holy foolXIII (!) century: "And we, Russians, eat each other and are full ". Is it my fault that I do not live in Moscow? Yuri Petrovich! You are a strong person and very kind. You are respected, you have been a deputy many times. Is it really impossible to make sure that, among the abundance of harmful unnecessary things, something good is sold not only in MOskwe, but for all our peoplewho and provides the prosperity of the tableAndtsy?! If you have the opportunity, answer my letter through some newspaper. Tell us what made you believe in this theoryAndplant oxidants? Maybe in these 2 years"PHYTOGALENIKA "invented something new? They don't write about it anywhere. Sorry to bother youToh, God bless you. (141270, Pushkinsky district, Sofrino village, Dalnyaya st., 4, apt. 11 KAtLIKOVANatalia , 50 years old, engineer). Next, we present the answer of Yu.P. Vlasov. First of all, I thank the editors of "MK" for the opportunity to meet with my Moscow. Returning from the next congress from the Kremlin with Academician D.S. Likhachev and Kyiv surgeon N.M. Amosov, we left the Kutafya Tower straight to the picketing of doctors. I was struck by the posters: " The government liberates the territory from the population!", "Treat - nothing!", "Medicines - poison, salary ate - Reptile!" etc. Likhachev looked at us and said quietly: " What a shame" Many years have passed ... Letters about the hopeless situation of sick people make up the majority in today's mail. Natasha, I thank you for your warm feelings. Your story touched me very much. How poignant are the words of Marina Tsvetaeva: " Do not be ashamed, the country of Russia! Angels are always barefoot ". IN 1994 year in the State Duma, I was a member of the security committee and introduced the law " About patient safety", working with the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, so I know the health problems of our people more than others. But another case helped me make my choice. At the 1st Congress of Deputies of the USSR Andrey Ivanovich Vorobyov(in those 90s of the end of the 20th century, the Minister of Health) presented me with a book published under his editorship " Practitioner's Handbook". Knowing him and respecting him as an excellent hematologist and a great scientist, I began to leaf through this reference book with interest, when, smiling broadly, he approached me Svyatoslav Fyodorov(what a pity that now he is not with us! This talented man was an original Russian nugget!). We talked to him: Yuronbka, he said to me, I will give you good advice. You will forget about ithnike if you read about antioxidants. Do you know anything about them?" "I know- I replied, - Back in 1964, at the Tokyo Olympics, I was
shocked at how the Japanese treat their health. There for a long time andAare taken by antioxidants, which is why they have such a highcontinuedAndthe value of life". "Do you know, Svyatoslav Nikolaevich, what is raWithbeneficial antioxidants?" he asked a question. Nicholas Mikhailovich Amosov approached and intervened in our conversation. Our entire further conversation determined my further position and worldview ... Modern man cannot and is not able to build his body's defenses, because he is sorely lacking in these same antioxidants, and it loses immunity, destroyed by free radicals. Since the time big sport I am accustomed to study the action of various drugs, consulting with friends - eminent scientists in pharmacology. And I clearly learned for myself: no synthetic or pharmacist-made tablet can ever be compared in effectiveness with the oil extract of medicinal plants, since many synthetic fillers are introduced into it for tableting during its preparation. Therefore, it is impossible to save plant antioxidants in tablet form! For educational program I report: antioxidants - these are effective oils I extracts-extracts of medicinal plants ! From manufactured antioxidants by medical companies " Vascular toTotorus"and NPC "" Phytogalenica"I buy and accept only: " KALbCII-IODINE with phytocomplex", "IMUFIT", "GASTROINTESTINAL TOTOTOR", "Healing oil with GOLDEN ROOT". Because they contain bioflavonoid fractions containing long molecules with an open hydroxyl group, necessary to increase the body's immunity and "capture" and remove free radicals from the body. Now me 69 with a small age (ed. February 2005), I train professionally with lifting heavy weights in two days on the third. My biggest training weight on the bar = 185 kg, and it is constantly growing. My stable "working" pressure 110/70 , heart rate - 64 beats per minute. Except physical training I continue to be very active and productive in creative and publishing work, releasing book after book and working hard every day at the computer. The intake of these antioxidant preparations also helps me to maintain these stable parameters and working capacity over the past years. More positive examples of the use of antioxidants in Everyday life. I know many people who are bedridden or wheelchair bound, who have had a stroke or who have a musculoskeletal disorder who, on my advice, should start taking " WITHABOUTJUDICIAL DOCTOR"After a few months they get on their feet and their speech disorders are completely restored. Where can I buy such a drug? The answer is - at present (ed. Spring 2005) in any homeopathic pharmacy. My daughter is for me" Vascular doctor"buys regularly at the pharmacy" Hope" on st. Maroseyka in Moscow, there this drug is always available. For other cities and faiths, only your doctor should and will be able to determine the availability of this drug in your pharmacy. And at the end of this interview, I will tell all readers the following: I have already 20 I have not been in a hospital or a polyclinic for the last few years, and I feel much better than when I was forty years old. Listen to your body, sum up your mistakes, find or determine by yourself or with the help of reliable, trusted people the root cause of your troubles and get rid of them yourself (!), moreand betterNobody will help you! Trust me: - it's quite possible! The one who can (!), but does not overcome his illness, hoping for outside help or some mythical pill that can help, I'm just sorry! .. After all, it’s not even so important how much is left to live, it’s important -How! Be your own blacksmiths and healers of your health! Your Yu.P. Vlasov.

She then opened for the first timeewhich sides of this amazing multifacetedhness. "... Chairs by the walls. White walls, all in the sayings of the great and ancient. And suddenly I see a signature under one aphorism: Yuri Vlasov. What is this?I'm from the Institute of General Psychology of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of the USSR ... But Vlasov also lives here. He is undergoing treatment for logoneurosis. DoctorJulia Nekrasova repeats: "As Yuri Petrovich told us? How did he teach us? Break the old character! The old character threatens with an old disease." But what does Vlasov have to do with it? He's not a doctor! “Oh,” Nekrasova replies, “Vlasov is more than a doctor. His miraculous classes with the sick! He cured stuttering that was beyond the control of any doctors. After hours, days, weeks, not only speech changed - the people themselves! I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes. By popular demand, today Yuri Petrovich answers readers. First of all, thank you for the warm response. The courage of people, especially women, is amazing. How kind and merciful you are in your grief! But the most defenseless today are the children and the old man, these letters are very sad. There is a question that almost everyone asks me:- Why I've Been Preferring the Same Plant-Based Antioxidants Mosco for YearsVPHYTOGALENIKA (Vascular Doctor, Stomach Doctor, etc.)? After all, a lot of the latest Western funds. Why all the same antioxidants?! I have been following my passion for plant based antioxidants for over 10 years now and feel great. But quite recently September 27, 2004 at 23 o'clock) I recorded an interesting message on the channel " Discovery".Here is a fragment of it: " At the Buck Institute in California, Dr. Simon Malov studies the problem of aging and O disease by testing antioxidants. Those multicellular organisms O ry received an antioxidant drug that absorbs free p A Dick A ly, lived twice as much than those who did not receive it. The Buck Institute in California concludes: - Antioxidant will become an elixir of debt O anniversary! " The Buck Institute is developing technology to create lawsuitWithessential antioxidants, and we have been taking for 10 years natural herbal antioxidants! Draw your own conclusions... Another study. Ultrasound shows a good condition of blood vessels in thin people. But it's bad for the bones - arises osteoporosis, risk of hip fracture. But the bat eats a lot, but lives a long time. Because there is a lot of movement? There is a refuting example: the budgerigar moves little, eats a lot and lives for more than 18 years! How does it fight free radicals? accept" VASCULAR DOCTOR"And you will get rid of many diseases and ailments! The following are links to numerous letters addressed to Yuri Petrovich with thanks and appreciation to him for his recommendations on the use of plant antioxidants and preparations of this group: "VASCULAR DOCTOR ", " IMUFIT in the treatment of various diseases in adults and children in different ages from life. And at the end of this meeting, Yuri Petrovich wishes all readers a worthy and productive meeting in the spring of 2005. and wishes: for women - new hopes, for men - new opportunities, for everyone - love, health, willpower and spirit in the fight against ailments and further life in contact and harmony with your body and your inner voice.

Vlasov Yury Petrovich

Vlasov Yuri Petrovich (b. 1935), athlete (weightlifting), Honored Master of Sports (1959), writer, publicist. Olympic champion (1960), not oneO multiple champion of the world, Europe and the USSR (1959-64), multiple record holder m And ra in the heavyweight division. Books: "Overcome Yourself" (1964), "Special Region of China" (1973), "Ref. A politeness of strength "(1989)," Fire n ny cross "(1991), etc. In 1996 he ran for the presidency of Russia th Russian Federation.

Article from the newspaper "Komsomolskaya Pravda" dated 12/15/2005.

Olympic weightlifting champion Yuri VLASOV: - "At 70 I lifting 185 kilograms " . ""celebrated an anniversary and after 9 years of seclusion gave an interview to a KP correspondent Once upon a time, only one was compared with Yuri Vlasov - Yuri Gagarin. Until now, weightlifters of the world recognize Vlasov as an ideal. The governor of California, the famous actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, considered Yuri Petrovich his idol all his life and specially came to Russia to meet him. Nine years ago (in 1996.) Vlasov ran for the presidency of Russia, and then disappeared ... They even wrote that he had died. December 5, 2005 of the year, Yuri Vlasov very modestly noted 70th anniversary. But he was congratulated not only by relatives and friends, but also by the President of Russia. So, they remember him at the very top ... Today Vlasov is still in great shape. Unless there is more gray hair. Got it out the other day A new book "Red jacks". It is about life in the Suvorov School, about love, about dreams and hopes that have come true. "Is Vlasov alive?" - Yuri Petrovich, where did you disappear to? Why so long, almost 10 years, not aboutbtalked to reporters and did not appear on the screens? After prezAndNobody saw you during the 1996 Dental elections ...- First of all, I thank the editors of "KP" for the opportunity to meet with readers.
I would like to answer the question with a question: where did you disappear to? Yes, I ran for president 1996 years and faced such lies and slander... I was repeatedly invited to the "President Hotel", where Yeltsin's elective headquarters was. I could make a choice. Or play by their rules, and then I was offered a game, money, a high rating, wide access to the media. Or a complete blockade in the press, zero percent in all elections, a very difficult future. And I made this choice ... Then, two weeks before the vote, a "Special Issue" was released around the country with an obituary that I had died ... Now 2005 year. At a book fair to the director of the publishing house that has just released my book " Red jacks A woman came up and asked: Is Vlasov still alive? "I know the ins and outs of the election. Why don't you write a book about it? Because it won't change anything. I wanted to write several other works, the time has come when it can no longer be delayed.
- But your old friend Arnold Schwarzenegger made a career for himself - he became the governor of California. Izmehas he been gone since he leftOlytic?- You know, they don't go into politics. If a person has earned respect throughout his life and is very popular, this is politics. Has he changed? I can't judge it. - After leaving the sport, many athletes disappear. Is there anything else to do besides coaching?Abots?- I have always thought about the essence of sport: does the country need people who can only run or just jump? Does sport exclude life itself, love, knowledge, creativity? You are right, I knew many great athletes who then became drunkards and even committed suicide. Here everything depends on the person, on his will and fortitude, on his faith in life itself, on his ability to suppress pride. It is not simple. But one should not dwell on the narrowness of victories, no matter how flattering they may be. Marina Tsvetaeva remarked perfectly: there are people with a thirst for employment - they are always looking for something to do. And there are with the gift of employment - they are always busy I You. Race for a long ruble - Yuri Petrovich, modern sports everything is built on the pursuit of big money. In your youth, sport was part of the ideology of the USSR. What is the point of sport anyway?- What do you think, why climbers conquer the peaks? Suffocate, die? Why go to the North Pole? Why does Konyukhov plow the ocean on a yacht? Are they all looking for money? Anyone who bargains for fees very quickly ceases to be an athlete. Anyone who wants to be strong, brave - he becomes it. A real man cannot avoid sports. And if he loves a woman, he must be healthy, strong, generous. When I started training, I had no idea that you could earn money from sports. Love for the Motherland was the leading principle. - Do you play sports now?
- Yes, I train professionally 2-3 times a week. It's one of the very few things I do to take my mind off literature and military history. But I love sports wholeheartedly, without it I would not be, not only in the physical sense, but also in the spiritual. - What is your record now?- A year ago I wanted to raise 200 kg, but stopped at 185 - it became scary for the vessels. I don't need to imitate, I've been playing iron games all my life, and loads for 70 years are very good. But I wish everyone to find their own form of employment. As long as a person is alive, nothing is too late. Sport gives a feeling of youth. - How is your health?- Thank God, normal. Everything evolved differently in different years. It’s impossible to say that it has always been brilliant, I underwent three terrible operations: a swelling on my arm from a barbell strike and two operations on my spine, when my relatives were already warned that I was unlikely to survive. But my sport was not amateur, it was not fun, it was a duel with death. After the operation, I did not die only thanks to sports, I was very strong in spirit, sports brought up the will. I was able to get up and returned to the iron again. With a few gaps due to surgeries, I train with 14 years. And now to me 70 . But sport has never been the goal and the only meaning. He has always been that help, those crutches that led me to solve other, more important, in my opinion, tasks. I told myself to lose weight - How do you keep fit?- Firstly, it is important to have a worthy goal in life, and a sick person cannot achieve it. There must be a desire to become healthy and strong. Second, never excess weight and always moving. Here great example - Amosov, Mikulin, Bragg. For example, I myself lost weight in a year 11 kg. Gradually. The weight crept towards 120 kg, this is both a lot and life-threatening. I ordered myself to leave 109 . Thirdly, move away from the chemicalization of life. "... And the Lord said: I gave you everything I what grass and every tree ". On the advice of Amosov, I do not part with a plant antioxidant. I do not chase longevity and do not want to achieve it at any cost, no, but the very movement, the feeling of youth, health give me joy. And if a person is healthy, he can do a lot, he can help the weak. And this is the need of any normal person. A healthy person and one warrior in the field. Anabolics cripple athletes - Recently, the bar was proposed to be excluded from Olympic sports sports. What do you think?

- I was the president of the Weightlifting Federation in the late 90s. I was amazed at how much the athletes "chemized" themselves with anabolics, now growth hormones have been added. Is this a fair sport? No! Is such a sport necessary if it cripples the youth and renders them barren? No! I fought against anabolics, but now anabolics, pardon the expression, - business. My opinion: either remove anabolics from the bar, or remove the bar as a sport. - Yuri Petrovich, how do you assessOstanding sports? Why do we lose almost everywhere? - What a country, such a sport. The country fell in spirit, fell in body, fell in deed. Here is the result. But to add nothing to this would be unfair. Lately, things have started to change. The sport itself is quite rightly becoming a state affair. The West beats us on the hands in everything, but it is impossible to dissuade a real athlete (even for money!) to win for Russia. I know how hard it is to win Borzakovsky, Pechenkina, Isinbayeva but they win. I understand very well how it hurts the soul Shamil Tarpishchev for his winners as he leads them to victory. It's hard, it comes at the cost of life. Perhaps sport is the first step towards revival? The main thing is not to destroy Russia - How do you assess the situation in Russia?- Over the course of many decades, I saw how we developed political life. Because of my high-profile victories, I became popular all over the world very early. I was included in government delegations: either we flew to Fidel Castro, then to de Gaulle ... Khrushchev loved me, he often invited me to the Kremlin. book" Special Region of China"I wrote for 7 years and personally discussed a lot with Andropov ( Vlasov's father was a resident in China, and the Central Committee instructed the pAbot over the book to the scout's son. - Approx. ed.). I was invited by Brezhnev to work for him as a referent for China, which I refused. Further - deputies at congresses and in the Duma, an endless series of elections, coups ... I have seen a lot, and therefore I can say with confidence that never on pOpolitics was not influenced by money in the way it is today. And this is the worst. At the dacha Svyatoslav Fedorov- he was an original and talented person - I was struck by the remark of one Western economist. He told me: " If our candidate fails somewhere, we throw 5 million E there With Is it not enough - we throw another 10 million. And it passes. And you know, Yuri Petr O vich, I'm scared that money can bring me into politics scary people, and I'm afraid sh but what could be in the world ! “We don’t have a political situation at all, we have political reshuffles. What do you think is the future of our country?- Our?! The well-being of Russia is cursed by all her enemies. Our Motherland was different... She was loved. And now it's being sold. I asked this question VlAso Pitirim he told me this: As soon as officials re-register arable land as property, then it will be re-registered as property n property or lease to foreigners. And that's it. They will have every right to demand the deployment of NATO troops to protect their private property. O sti ". United and indivisible Russia. This is the most important thing now. But united - with whom? With its people or united with America and Europe? It is important that Russia remain our land, our Motherland. If this cannot be done, then I see to 2012 - 2015 year the most difficult trials, and not only in our country, but also in the world. And no one will help. BY THE WAY: IN 13 years in Vienna, a young thin boy Arnold Schwarzenegger was introduced to Vlasov. When asked by Arnie how to become as strong as him, the weightlifter replied: " Genetically, you are unlikely to pull the bar, for th go bodybuilding ". Schwarzenegger followed the advice of Yuri Petrovich and became known to the whole world. Marina SURANOVA

Surprisingly, the barbell - the sport that brought him world recognition - did not like it. Read more about her in books. idolized strong people, read a book Georg Hakkenshmidt "The Way to Strength and Health". He liked to exercise with dumbbells and kettlebells. After graduating from the Suvorov Military School, he entered the Air Force Academy named after N.E. Zhukovsky, where, contrary to his former logic, he became seriously interested in heavy
athletics. Academy named after N.E. Zhukovsky, he graduated from 1959 year with a red diploma and a gold medal. Now his mentor is Suren Petrosovich Bogdasarov. In teche5 years (1959-63) the athlete won all the competitions - the championships of the USSR, Europe, the world. IN 1959 Y. Vlasov was awarded a high sports title - "Honored Master of Sports of the USSR". IN 1960 year at the Olympics in Rome, Vlasov set 4 heavyweight record: 180 kg in bench press and 155 kg snatch (Olympic), 202,5 kg in clean and jerk and 537.5 kg in the sum of classical triathlon (world). Having won in absentia duel of the famous American heavyweight Paul Anderson, he was recognized as the best athlete of the Roman Olympics, he was awarded the title " The strongest man on the planet"On the Roman platform, Vlasov accomplished an inherently unprecedented feat: he turned the idea of the world's strongest athletes in the minds of mankind. He proved by his example that a person can be both strong and highly educated, intelligent, intelligent. If before Vlasov's triumph in Rome, weightlifters were often looked at as representatives brute force, with limited intellect, then on the Roman pedestal - with the help of television, the press - the world community met a charming person in all respects.
The hero turned out to be a great erudite. He could easily talk with journalists and admirers of his talent about music, sculpture, painting, about the advantages and disadvantages of world literary classics, and not only in Russian, but also in French. Vlasov stated that force, like reason, can develop indefinitely. He was believed by hundreds of thousands of athletes from the most different countries. Thanks to Vlasov, the bar has become one of the trendiest and most attractive sports equipment. Weightlifting has gained a "second wind" and rapidly gained high popularity on all continents. The "golden age" of not only Russian, but also world barbells began. At the Tokyo Olympics in 1964 year Vlasov established 2 world records: in the press - 197,5 kg, snatch - 172,5 kg, but in triathlon total ( 570 kg) took second place. After losing in Tokyo, the athlete stopped active training, but in 1966 started training again. IN 1967 year, the athlete pleased the fans by setting another, but, as it turned out, the last record at the Moscow Championship - 199 kg in bench press. The idea to leave weightlifting and seriously engage in literary activity came to him more and more often. True, there was a debt to the barbell, which made him world famous. It seemed to split in two, which negatively affected his literary passion and weightlifting training. But the champion could no longer stay between the bar and the feather for too long, and did not want to. Vlasov's public statement that he was leaving the weightlifting platform forever upset all his fans very much. The athlete was in his prime and was the first to lift in total 600 kg, but this, alas, known reasons did not happen. Yu.P. Vlasov became a writer, statesman and public figure. Parents

His father, Pyotr Parfenovich Vlasov (1905-1953), a graduate of the N. N. Narimanov Moscow Institute of Oriental Studies, worked as a TASS correspondent in China from 1938 to 1940, and as a Comintern liaison under the leadership of the CPC Central Committee from 1942 to 1945. In 1946, Petr Parfenovich went to work at the USSR Foreign Ministry. From 1948 to 1951 he served as the Consul General of the USSR in Shanghai, since 1952 - the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the USSR to Burma.

Mother - Maria Danilovna, originally from the Kuban, worked as the head of the library. From an early age, her sons, Yuri and Boris, Maria Danilovna instilled a love of reading books. Passed away in 1987.

Suvorov Military School

In 1946, Yuri Vlasov entered the Saratov Suvorov Military School, graduating with honors in 1953. Dreaming of being like his father, he wants to become a diplomat.

During his studies at the school, Yuri more than once achieved success in the sports field. Performing the second male category in athletics, he easily ran skiing, skating, pushing the shot and throwing a grenade. At the wrestling championship held in Saratov, he takes first place.

By the age of fifteen, Yuri weighs about 90 kg, begins to be interested in power sports, but so far more from books. Reads "The Way to Strength and Health" by the legendary strength athlete and wrestler Georg Hackenschmidt.

Air Force Engineering Academy

After the Suvorov School, Yuri Vlasov enters the Moscow Air Force Engineering Academy named after N. E. Zhukovsky. After graduating from it, in 1959 he received a red diploma and a military specialty - an engineer in aviation radio communications.

It is while studying at the academy that Yuri joins weightlifting, which, by and large, he was not interested in before. But his first steps and the very first successes in the new field were phenomenal - already in 1957, training under the guidance of his first coach Evgeny Nikolaevich Shapovalov, Yuri fulfills the standard of a master of sports in weightlifting. His first all-Union record: clean and jerk - 185 kg, snatch - 144.5 kg. The badge of the master of sports to Yuri Vlasov is presented by the legendary Marshal Semyon Mikhailovich Budyonny himself. In the same year, Vlasov sets a number of records of the all-Union rank, which secures a place for himself in the list of the best weightlifters of the USSR.

After graduating from the academy, Yuri begins to train under the auspices of CSKA, Suren Petrosovich Bagdasarov becomes his coach, and then his friend. As a cadet, Yuri devotes all the time remaining after classes at the academy to training, sometimes denying himself his favorite pastime - reading books.

1957 also became a year of trials for Yuriy - at the competitions in Lviv, when trying to take a record weight, he injured his leg and spine. In the same year, Yuri Vlasov met his future wife, art student Natalya Modorova, who, by chance, made sketches in the gym where Yuri trained. The support of his wife and true friends, Bagdasarov and Shapovalov, helps Yuri get back into action and win all conceivable and unimaginable records.

In 1959 he was awarded the honorary title - Honored Master of Sports of the USSR. In the same year, at the World and European Championships, held in Warsaw, an already certified military engineer pushes a barbell weighing 197.5 kg and in triathlon shows the coveted 500 kg, which demonstrates to the sports community the intention to continue to break the records of the American weightlifting team hitherto, as it seemed to many, unattainable.

1960 Olympics in Rome

The 1960 Olympics, held in the Italian capital, was of decisive importance in the fate of Yuri Vlasov. On August 25, Vlasov, lightly holding the flag of our country with one hand, walked along Olympic Stadium together with the USSR team. He had to fight with American weightlifters - Norbert Shemansky and Jim Bradford, his main heavyweight competitors. Vlasov emerged from the battle of the titans as an absolute winner, even crushing the results of another American, Paul Anderson, who dominated weightlifting at that time and, according to the American media, were unattainable for at least another hundred years.

Vlasov at the Olympics in Rome refuted all the existing canons of weightlifting and for the first time demonstrated to the public and the world community that a comprehensively developed person, a person, can be a champion. A highly educated intellectual with the ability to easily talk with journalists about world literature and art appeared before the public. Yuri Vlasov knew French and Chinese. He won the attention and respect of the journalistic community, which not many managed to do.

Yuri Petrovich Vlasov was recognized as the best athlete of the Roman Olympics, awarded the title "The Strongest Man on the Planet". Thanks to Vlasov's victory, weightlifting for many decades became popular view sports on all continents, all over the world.

In Rome on September 10, 1960, Vlasov competes in heavyweight, presses 180 kg, vomits 155 kg, and in the third attempt pushes a record 202.5 kg. In the sum of three movements, he gains 537.5 kg - an unprecedented figure at that time, which broke the monopoly of Paul Anderson (Anderson's official record is 512 kg and 533 kg, shown at domestic competitions in Texas, both in 1956). Yuri Vlasov overtook Olympic silver medalist Jim Bradford by as much as 25 kg, leaving him far behind.

At the solemn closing ceremony of the XVII Olympic Games, Yuri Vlasov again triumphantly carries the banner Soviet team. The 1960 Olympics deservedly bears the name of the legendary Yuri Vlasov.

1964 Tokyo Olympics

In 1964 in Tokyo Olympic competitions weightlifters aroused increased interest. The undisputed leader of our team was still Yuri Vlasov. His main opponent in Tokyo was a colleague in the USSR national team Leonid Zhabotinsky.

The main clash of heavyweights (Vlasov weighed 136.4 kg, Zhabotinsky - 154.4 kg) took place on October 18. In the first competitive movement, the bench press, Vlasov is ahead of Zhabotinsky by 10 kg, setting a new world record of 197.5 kg. In the snatch, Yuri takes 162 kg against 167.5 kg of Leonid, in the fourth attempt, which is no longer going to the official standings, he pulls out a world record of 172.5 kg. But the gap in total is reduced to 5 kg, Vlasov is still in the lead.

The main intrigue of the Tokyo Olympics played out in the third exercise, the clean and jerk. According to the recollections of both of its participants, it was a strategic game in which Zhabotinsky was destined to win - in the third attempt he pushes 217.5 kg, overtaking Vlasov (210 kg) and becoming the Tokyo Olympic champion. Yuri Vlasov - silver medalist Olympics, the true idol of millions.

Latest record

Being devastated by the constant struggle on the platform and in the hall, after the Tokyo competitions, Yuri Petrovich Vlasov stops professional training, completely devoting himself to his second favorite pastime - literature. But having resumed training in 1966, in 1967, at the Moscow Championship, Yuri sets the last world record in bench press - 199 kg, for which he receives 850 rubles. In 1968, Vlasov officially leaves their big sport, retires from military service, leaving 41 USSR records, 31 world records, 4 world championships and 6 European championships conquered.

In 1960, Vlasov was awarded the Order of Lenin, and in 1964 he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor. Yuri Petrovich Vlasov was recognized as the best athlete of the country, of the year and of the entire twentieth century.

Since 1959, Vlasov has been publishing essays and stories, in 1961 he won the second prize in the competition for the best sports story (the first prize was not awarded). In 1962, he came to the European Championships not only as an athlete, but also as a special correspondent for the Izvestia newspaper. "Overcome Yourself" is the first collection of stories by Yuri Vlasov, published in 1964, even before the Tokyo Olympics.

In 1973, after seven years of work, the book "Special Region of China. 1942-45" was published under the pseudonym Vladimirov, in memory of his father. In 1984, Yuri Vlasov's book "The Justice of Force", well-known in sports and not only circles, appeared, which was reprinted in 1989 and 1995. In 2005, "Red Jacks" came out.

In the literary field, Yuri Vlasov proved himself as a historian and publicist, a person who cares about the future of our country, for which in Soviet times he wrote "on the table" for a long time.

Social and political figure

In 1985, Yuri Petrovich Vlasov headed the USSR Weightlifting Federation. From 1987 to 1988 - the Athletic Gymnastics Federation of the USSR (bodybuilding), after its long-awaited recognition at the state level.

In the difficult years of 1993-95, Yuri Vlasov was elected to the State Duma. He works in the security committee, until the summer of 1994 he is a member of the Russian Way deputy group, in February 1994 he nominates a candidate for the post of chairman of the State Duma. Later in 1996 he ran for president Russian Federation, but drops out of the election race in the first round, officially gaining 0.2% of the vote. In the same period, Vlasov's opponents initiate a "Special Issue" with a fictitious obituary, announcing his death. After Yuri Petrovich Vlasov decides to leave big politics.

Great Athlete.

Yuri Vlasov

1955 For a while, Moscow forgot about football and hockey. The barbell was what interested Muscovites, even those who had previously been indifferent to sports in general and weightlifting in particular. Moscow was waiting for the arrival of a "miracle" from distant America. "Miracle" was named Paul Anderson. “Man is a mountain”, “man is a crane”, “the strongest man on the planet”. They talked about him in institutes and factories, in trams and subways, in restaurants and shops ...

Lifting the sum of three exercises - bench press, snatch and jerk - 500 kilograms ... In those years, it seemed unrealistic, for a long time the athletes were approaching the cherished milestone, but could not overcome it. The winner of the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki, John Davis, gained 460 kg. His compatriot Norbert Shemansky won the world championship in Vienna two years later with a score of 487.5 kg. An amazing amount, a colossal weight, a new world record. And still, up to five hundred kilograms was still far away ... And suddenly, like a bolt from the blue, a message came from the United States - the 500 kg mark had been overcome! On April 22, 1955, a native of the small town of Toccoa, Georgia, 22-year-old Paul Anderson scored 518.5 kg in triathlon! True, then world records were recorded only at the Olympic tournaments, world and European championships, and the competitions in South Carolina, where Anderson showed his phenomenal result, were not included in this list. So officially the world record has not yet been surpassed. But the figure itself - 518.5 kg - staggered the imagination. In 1935, the German weightlifter Josef Manger, "the king of strongmen for all time", as he was then called, gained 401.5 kg in triathlon. Since then, athletes have slowly, step by step, approached a new frontier. And suddenly a man appeared who broke all the foundations of the weightlifting world, easily and naturally stepped over a seemingly insurmountable line.

On June 5, 1955, at the US Championships in Cleveland, "Baby Paul" again showed his strength. He scored 519.37 kg in triathlon. Davis, the second medalist of the championship, was almost 80 kg behind him. In just a few months, Anderson turned from an unknown athlete into a world celebrity, a "miracle man", a superman, whose name did not leave the pages of newspapers and magazines. No other weightlifter has received so many honors.

A week after the US Championship, the famous philanthropist Robert Hoffman, the actual owner of American weightlifting (he owned the legendary New York Barbell Club, whose representatives were almost all the best US weightlifters), brought the American team led by Anderson to Moscow. When Paul got off the plane and stepped onto the gangway, an enthusiastic "hoo-hoo!" Yes, "Little Paul" really made a lasting impression. Height 177 cm ... Well, this was just not surprising. But everything else ... Weight 165 kg, huge biceps 57 centimeters in circumference, incredibly powerful legs, thigh volume - almost a meter ... Of course, at first glance, Anderson seemed like a clumsy monster, but under a layer of fat, incredible muscle strength was hidden, which allowed him to lift record weights.

Wherever Anderson performed, tickets for competitions with his participation diverged instantly. So it was in Moscow. On June 15, 1955, on a rainy damp day, almost fifteen thousand spectators filled the Green Theater of the Central Park of Culture and Recreation in Moscow. Of course, the main "star" was Anderson. And "little Paul" did not disappoint the Moscow public. For the bench, he ordered 172.5 kg, which was 4 kg more than the official world record of Canadian Doug Hepburn. Paul not only lifted this weight, in front of an astonished audience, he squeezed the barbell three times. In terms of triathlon, he repeated the result he showed ten days ago in Cleveland - 518.5 kg. And at the end of the performance, Paul took a barbell weighing 275 kg on his shoulders and easily sat down five times.

Among those who watched Anderson's performance at the Green Theater was a nineteen-year-old cadet of the Zhukovsky Air Force Academy, Yuri Vlasov. He took a 16mm movie camera given by his father and went to the Green Theatre. He did not have a ticket, but then amateur movie cameras were a rarity. They took him either for a foreigner, or for a cameraman, and freely let him through all the posts. “I pretended to be filming, while I stared at Anderson! - recalled Yuri Petrovich. - I looked at him and into the locker room. How happy I was!”

“What, this one ... Yes, the guy, of course, is strong, but ... No, this is ridiculous, this is impossible ...” Probably, any of those present that rainy evening at the Green Theater would have reacted this way if someone, some soothsayer, a home-grown Moscow Nostradamus, would have pointed to Vlasov and said: “Do you know that this young man in a few years will surpass Anderson’s records, and not just surpass, but go far ahead.” Those who saw Paul were sure that before them was the greatest athlete of all time, whose records would live forever. In October of the same year, at the World Championships in Munich, he set the official world record, lifting 512.5 kg in triathlon. The previous achievement of Norbert Szemansky has been improved by 25 kg. Anderson's advantage over rivals was simply overwhelming. What he did seemed to be the limit, the limit of human possibilities. In 1956, the USSR bench press record was 161 kg, Anderson's best result was 185.5 kg. In the clean and jerk, the American surpassed the USSR record by 19 kg (199.5 against 180.5). And in terms of triathlon, Paul was ahead of the best achievement Soviet weightlifters for 60 kg! Well, how to deal with such an incredible power! In those years, many heavyweight athletes were advised to quit weightlifting and take up some other, more promising sport in terms of world achievements. “Better take up athletics, try throwing,” they said to Vlasov, “because there are terrible numbers in the bar, Anderson’s results in the bar.”

Even the Americans complained that Anderson, despite all his amazing achievements, for some time "killed American weightlifting outright", at least in the heavyweight category. Many young weightlifters, realizing that they could not even come close to the results of "little Paul", left for other sports. Why are there young people ... The repeated winner of the World Championships and the Olympic Games Jim Bradford, by the way, in terms of build, reminiscent of "baby Paul", did not appear at major tournaments for four years. It was pointless to resist Anderson's pressure... But Yuri thought differently...

Returning home after Anderson's performance at the Green Theater, Vlasov wrote in his training notebook: "Nothing has power over me! .."

Yuri Vlasov was born on December 5, 1935 in Makeevka, Donetsk region. His father, Pyotr Parfenovich Vlasov (later he changed his surname to Vladimirov), came from Voronezh peasants, worked at the Voronezh repair plant, repaired steam locomotives. And then there was a revolution, the Civil War, Soviet power ... The son of a simple peasant made dizzying career The worker became a high-ranking diplomat. After graduating from the Moscow Institute of Oriental Studies, Petr Parfenovich ended up in China, where he worked as a TASS correspondent. In May 1942, he was sent to Yan'an (the so-called Special Region of China) as a Comintern liaison to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. After the end of the war, Pyotr Vladimirov went to work in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR. From 1948 to 1951 he was the Consul General of the USSR in Shanghai, and from 1952 - Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the USSR to Burma. Petr Parfenovich lived a very bright and interesting, but, unfortunately, short life. In 1953, when he was not yet fifty, he died. Twenty years later, the book “A Special Region of China” was published, the author of which was a certain journalist Vladimirov. This book, as they would say now, instantly became a bestseller, a lot was said and argued about it. And what was the surprise of readers when they learned that this book was written former athlete, and not a sinologist historian, the history, philosophy and life of China were shown so authentically and reliably, with the smallest details. “I idolized my father,” said Yuri Petrovich. - Most of all I admired the cult of reason and knowledge, which he tried to instill in everyone who was next to him. And the "Special Region of China" is my duty to my father. Father, when he realized that he was dying, began to tell me what he had learned. And he asked to complete the main work of his life.

Yuri Petrovich's mother, Maria Danilovna, is from the Kuban. She worked as a librarian, head of the library. From the mother, according to great athlete, both the love of books and considerable strength passed to him. “I remember how she shamed the porter: he could not lay a sixty-kilogram bag with her favorite Kuban apples on the luggage net,” Vlasov recalled. - Mom pushed him away and in one movement shoved the bag up to the ceiling, and she was in her sixties. And until old age, she retained harmony and femininity.

Yura dreamed of following in his father's footsteps, becoming a diplomat or intelligence officer. But Pyotr Parfenovich thought differently. In 1946, Yuri was enrolled in the Saratov Suvorov School. Naturally, a strong guy (at the age of fifteen he weighed almost a hundred kilograms) could not stay away from sports. “I grew up in the Suvorov School, among strong and healthy boys,” Vlasov said about the beginning of his sports career. – Strength and prowess were especially valued and respected by us. We gradually engaged in wrestling, boxing (in the early fifties he became the heavyweight boxing champion of Saratov . - Auth.), athletics. All together - book heroes, the desire to move, fight, win - gave rise to a love for sports in us. Therefore, when I graduated from college and entered the first year of the Zhukovsky Air Force Academy, I no longer thought of myself outside of sports. And if a blind chance led me to the kettlebell gym, then it was no longer a chance that made me fall in love with this seemingly uninteresting and truly difficult sport.

In 1953, after graduating from the Suvorov military school, Yuri entered the radio engineering department of the N. E. Zhukovsky Air Force Academy. Here he was introduced to weightlifting. Everything was military simple. “Cadet Vlasov, step forward! You will compete for the faculty on the barbell. Report at sixteen zero zero to the academy gym. Get in line." Like it or not, whether you like to lift the barbell or not, no one cares, orders are not discussed. At these competitions, the coach of the weightlifting section Evgeny Nikolaevich Shapovalov somehow explained to Yuri what a bench press, snatch and jerk are and how to lift the barbell in general.

Vlasov was predicted to succeed in athletics (relatively “light” - Yuri showed good results in shot put). And the barbell ... At first, he did not like the barbell. But with each training session, he more and more liked to take on the bar, take the projectile on his chest, and then, instantly turning on the energy of all the muscles of the body, conquer the seemingly unbearable weight. And of course, he was lucky with the coach: “Without Shapovalov, I would never have taken up weightlifting, and my life, of course, would have turned out completely differently. Hot-tempered, tough, he selflessly loved weightlifting, and even more - strong and well-shaped muscles.

Under the leadership of Evgeny Shapovalov, for three years, Yuri Vlasov managed to move into the ranks of the best heavyweight weightlifters in the country. The first serious successes in weightlifting came to Vlasov in 1957. At the Armed Forces Championship in Lvov, he fulfilled the standard of a master of sports, improved all-Union records in the clean and jerk and snatch. But along with the records, the first injuries came - the bar showed Yuri that it could not only submit, but also break, injure the athlete: “The bar broke me, but I hesitated. I hoped to calm her down. And only when I was numb from pain and yellow, viscous light floated in my eyes, and my mouth cramped, I slipped out from under the weight. I'm late, but it could have been worse..."

And the first international performances for Yuri Vlasov were unsuccessful. Before the competition for the Moscow Prize in 1957, the capital was struck by an epidemic of "Asian" flu. "Lucky" and Vlasov - he fell ill just before the start of the competition. “However, it was not the flu that poisoned the muscles - fear,” the athlete recalled. - And not even fear of the given weights or rivals, but an irresistible dumbfoundedness before the unusual situation. I got used to a cramped room with two platforms back to back - this was the sports "hall" of CSKA of those years on Leningradsky Prospekt. And here is the immensity of the Luzhnikov Palace of Sports. I dreamed about her. Saved from disgrace by the team doctor, wrote off due to illness from the competition. In April 1958, Vlasov was injured again - at the USSR Championship in Donetsk, he injured his left knee-joint. I spent a whole month in plaster. “After these injuries, according to many, I no longer had a place in the trials of the big game,” said Yuri Petrovich. - The famous old athlete quipped: “The boy immediately went to rest from the nursery ...” But Vlasov did not break down, he already fell in love with the barbell, could not live without “iron” and daily workouts often ending long after midnight. Yuri had to share sports with his studies at the academy, or rather, give weightlifting the crumbs that remained after classes. Nobody gave him concessions or discounts. Six or seven hours of lectures, labs, term papers, consultations, exams, and only then - a small training room and a barbell.

At the same time, the image of Vlasov began to take shape, completely inimitable and unique, an image that combined the seemingly incompatible. An intellectual, an erudite, a polyglot, a man who idolized the book, a writer - and an athlete who chose for himself a rude and primitive, at least at first glance, sport.

In 1957, Suren Petrovich Bogdasarov began to train Vlasov - a gentle and calm person, more of an adviser than a coach. Yuri rushed forward, set records and immediately wanted to improve his own result, cruelly, like a doctor experiencing the effects of a deadly virus, he experimented on his body, exposing himself to overload during training. “Mad Elephant” - his fellow weightlifters spoke about Vlasov. He just went crazy, fell into some kind of ecstasy when he saw the barbell and heard the sound of iron. And Suren Petrovich, a wise coach, stopped him: “Shocks are not needed, these overloads and tests are dangerous. Enough! Your strength will last for a good ten years to come. Believe: I will not harm you, you are like a son to me ... "

“How much he accepted the evil assigned to me, carried, hid the injustice assigned to me! - Vlasov said about Suren Bogdasarov. - He, as best he could, protected me from my own, sometimes gross, mistakes. He believed, believed that I was powerful in strength and inaccessible in it, if I surrendered to the “iron”, I would not split myself between literary work and sports, but most importantly, he always believed in me, did not consider my performances against opponents of any strength and preparedness as a risk, when I swam in illnesses and weaknesses - and this, in the end, was the biggest blood-inseparable connection. I was no longer attached to him by friendship, but by a kindred, undying connection ... "

1959 is the year of Vlasov's rise. Until recently, he was "promising", then "second number", and now he is called " the best weightlifter heavy weight in the country." On April 22, at the championship of the Armed Forces in Leningrad, Yuri set his first world record - he took 196.5 kilograms in the clean and jerk. In terms of triathlon, he showed the third result in the history of weightlifting. The coaching council decided that Vlasov deserved to represent the country at the World Championships.

So, Warsaw, the first world championship in the career of Yuri Vlasov. And the rivals - here they are, nearby. All of the world's heavyweight elite. True, there is no Anderson. After winning the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, Paul retired from amateur weightlifting. But everyone else is here. Bulgarian Ivan Veselinov, Finn Eino Myakkinen, Italian Alberto Pigayani... And of course the Americans, who feel like masters everywhere. David Ashman and Jim Bradford. The “Big Washingtonian” (as the journalists called Bradford) returned after a long break and really wanted to prove to everyone that he, at least in the absence of Anderson, is the most powerful person on Earth.

The first exercise is a bench press. Yuri started very nervously. In the second approach, he made a mistake and as a result, before the snatch, he lost 10 kg to Bradford. You can, of course, say a couple of “kind” words to the judges, who did not count the actually clean attempt, but what's the point ...

In the snatch, Yuri won back 2.5 kg. A little, but you can’t win back much in this exercise, only if the opponent does not break. But Bradford is not going to break loose, and Vlasov does not take risks in test attempts. The main thing is to take your weight, not to lag behind your opponent. And then Yuri asked for a fourth attempt. He was going for a world record. And took the weight! This attempt did not count as triathlon, but Vlasov gained confidence in his abilities, he prepared to give his best to get Bradford. And the "Big Washington" at that moment, apparently, faltered. Already after the first attempt in the clean and jerk, Vlasov caught up with Bradford and, since he was lighter than his opponent, won the world title. And in the next two approaches, he increased his advantage to 7.5 kg. "End of the race! For a few weeks I am free from "iron" and thoughts about tomorrow. Down with all worries! In a few weeks I will start the race again, again the game of “who wins”, and now you can forget everything! All!.."

What was Yuri thinking about when he stood on the highest step of the podium? The fact that the years of exhausting training were not in vain, that he won for his great country gold medal championship, ahead of the Americans, the main and most hated rivals? No, he was thinking about a bird... What kind of bird? Maybe about the “bird of happiness”, which here and now chose him? No, about an ordinary rooster ... “Throughout the entire ceremony of erection to the world and European champions, the same ridiculous memory: this rooster! I fortified myself in seriousness - fanfare, flowers, medals ... But this rooster! The national team trained for three weeks in Balashikha near Moscow. From there I went to Warsaw. Well, what a brave rooster led hens behind the neighboring fence! With what fury he attacked! The strongest guys fled. You have to be serious: the anthem! And I'm afraid to unclench my teeth. Obviously, at once he began to move away from the many weeks of clamping of feelings ... "

And then - was there a feeling of happiness, a sense of satisfaction from a job well done, the joy of victory? No. Yuri understood that the shadow of Anderson and his “eternal” records was invisibly between him and universal recognition: “The more meticulously I tried to understand myself, the more clearly the understanding came that for everyone I was just the winner of the championship. But the primacy in strength is not recognized for me. And I already knew why - Anderson! Anderson has strength, Anderson is outwardly indestructible. Only for such the future - has already been proven. And I?.."

At the banquet after the closing ceremony of the championship, a slightly tipsy David Ashman approached Yuri and pointedly, with the pathos of a soothsayer, said: “Vlasov is Warsaw prima, but Rome is Vlasov no prima ...” And then Bob Hoffman decided to put Vlasov in his place: “You good guy, but in Rome we will figure it out ... "Well, let's see what will happen in Rome ...

“A city with a fantastic name – Rome! What is he? Will I see? How is it, a test of results, mischief of strength - and suddenly all this paved the way to a fabulous city? The frivolous turned into a complete surprise, and also such a serious one! Rome, Rome…”

In 1956, at the Olympic Games in Melbourne, the Americans won one more gold medal than the Soviet team, and became the first in the unofficial team standings. What will happen in Rome, will Melbourne be repeated? Three world championships in a row, from 1957 to 1959, our weightlifters convincingly outplayed their main rivals. But the main boss of American weightlifting did not let up: “The Russians remain our most dangerous rivals,” Bob Hoffman said in an interview with the French newspaper Ekip. “But we will leave Rome undefeated. If we won one title in Warsaw, now we will take three. We brought the biggest and strongest team to Rome." And of course, the main target of the Americans is Vlasov. Anderson's "legacy" still remained unplayed. Both Vlasov and the Americans were getting closer to the achievements of “little Paul” and his “eternal” records no longer seemed so eternal. But the figure "512.5" - Anderson's world record for triathlon - continued to put pressure on everyone with its heavy weight.

But Yuri had a chance a few months before the Olympics to break the most important world record in weightlifting. And a good chance. At the USSR Championship, held in Leningrad in June, Vlasov set three all-Union records, one of which, in the snatch, was higher than the world record. And if it were not for an unfortunate oversight in one of the approaches, when Yuri touched his knee with his elbow while lifting the barbell to the chest (this is considered a technical error and the attempt does not count), then he could well have surpassed Anderson's record. As a result, Vlasov gained 510 kg in triathlon. Close, very close… By the way, Alexei Medvedev was Yuri's main rival at that championship. Before the “epoch of Vlasov”, it was Medvedev who was considered the strongest heavyweight in the Union. But with the advent of Vlasov, Alexei was doomed to the fate of the "second number". Medvedev resisted, and when he realized that he had no chance against Vlasov (“there is no reception against scrap”), he even tried to move to a lower category. But even in the first heavy weight, Medvedev got the role of an extra. In 1963, Alexei Medvedev retired from sports and sat down for his PhD thesis. Topic: "The basics of training in weightlifting." And a year later, Alexei Sidorovich Medvedev nevertheless took revenge on Yuri Petrovich Vlasov. He took revenge coolly, with taste ... Not by himself, but with the help of his student (“there is no reception against scrap if there is no other scrap”). But more on that later, the time will come for a weightlifting vendetta…

Hold on, Russians, hold on, Vlasov, and hold on ... Paul Anderson, although you have been performing in circus shows for a long time and amateur weightlifting records are of little interest to you. The "Big Washington" is on the warpath and ready to fight! An "intercontinental bomb" of lethal power will be dropped on Vlasov and all Soviet weightlifting!

Who was Bob Hoffman hoping for so much? For Jim Bradford? Yes, Jim is strong, but Vlasov outplayed the "Big Washington" in Warsaw. However, Bradford did not doze off. He built up his strength for a whole year, preparing for the Olympics. He denied himself the usual human joys, forgot his family - only training, only "iron". The Americans arrived in Italy much earlier than ours. And here they trained to exhaustion. In one of these workouts, Bradford lifted 520 kilograms in triathlon. And this is 7.5 kg more than Anderson's "eternal" record.

And what else can be opposed to Vlasov? Hoffman has long noticed Yuri's excessive susceptibility, his not always adequate reaction to what is happening on the platform. “Take him in pincers, piss him off, make him worry. After all, he is alone, and there are two of my guys, ”Hoffman must have thought so when he decided to field two heavyweight athletes. Together with Bradford, the most experienced Norbert Shemansky was supposed to “tick” Vlasov. “I gave the American coaches the direction of the blow: to resolutely crush me in every exercise, to put up two heavyweight athletes for this, and I will falter,” Vlasov admitted. - I can't help but tremble. Proven. I am weak-hearted on the platforms - now I bear this stigma ... But there was strength!

There was strength, there was ... Vlasov showed this strength to the whole world at the opening ceremony of the Games, on August 25, 1960. The Foro Italico stadium roared with delight when Yuri carried the banner of the Soviet Union on one arm. But it was not easy both physically (the banner is heavy), and mentally. “In the responsibility to carry the banner, to answer for it, I became stiff,” Yury Petrovich recalled. - Carry the banner like we have at the demonstration? Shoulder? Rest the pole in the stomach, like most? And here is the field, applause! I grabbed the shaft by the very tip, and extended my hand. The stadium trembled and roared ... "

He is young, he is strong, he has accumulated incredible strength and is ready to throw it out in full on the platform. And suddenly ... How often does this “and suddenly” get in the way of a dream. It was as if fate did not want Yuri to win this Olympics. The USSR national team held latest workouts before the Games on the Riga seashore. Despite the prohibitions of the coaches, Vlasov once could not resist and swam in the icy - seven degrees - water. The result is inflammation of the middle ear. It was possible to return Yuri to the ranks only by behind-the-ear injections of penicillin. The disease was quickly defeated, but who knew that in Rome Vlasov would again have to inject penicillin in horse doses?

In the morning there was a slight irritation on the thigh. And in the evening, the leg was covered with huge boils, a continuous abscess with throbbing pain. Yuri had a fever, he did not sleep well, his appetite completely disappeared. “If it were any other competition, and not the Olympics, I would simply forbid him to go on the platform,” the doctor said. Olympic team Zoya Sergeevna Mironova. - But how to go for it if Vlasov is going to become the strongest athlete on the planet? Will he win in this state? But under the pressure of Vlasov, I began to give up. Apparently, this was the case when the situation forced a person to mobilize all his forces.

Vlasov was not going to give up the Olympics. In the course went special bandages, novocaine blockade. And penicillin... A dozen injections in the thigh... For some time, the inflammation was relieved, but after another workout, the abscesses again grew to their previous size. Zoya Mironova had to perform an operation, open abscesses, remove dead tissue. And again penicillin. And then ... “And then I vomited,” Vlasov said. “God forbid they find out about it!” Ready for anything - just to work! I have come so far to this day!”

Illness is always bad. Especially at such an inopportune time. There are no suitable moments for illness at all, but this is especially important for athletes - it is one thing to get sick somewhere in the off-season, when you are free from competition, and quite another - on the eve of the most important start in your life. But illness is an accident "accidental". If you already picked it up, then you can't do anything. There are only two choices - fight or surrender. And what if they are also trying to “survive” you from the Olympic team for an insignificant offense?

“I forgot about training and misfortune. And misfortune followed the disease. And I called him…”

It's hot in Rome, very hot, the temperature is well over thirty. What can you do after dinner - just lie down in a sun lounger and relax somewhere in the shade. What Yuri, in fact, did. If I had left my room, nothing would have happened. But the room is also hot. And here, under the house, in the fertile shade, in the fresh air - it’s good, it’s easy ... Vlasov was dozing in a deck chair when they called him. Pole vaulters Vladimir Bulatov and Igor Petrenko and shot putter Viktor Lipsnis. “Do not refuse, drink with us for the victory. We have just a little - a bottle of brandy. There is still a whole week before Vlasov's performance - you can relax. Although, in principle, it is impossible. But if you really want to, then you can. A bottle of brandy for four healthy men is nothing, it will disappear in two hours. Yes, and Vlasov agreed to the offer of athletes, not because he really wanted to drink: “I almost did not know them. All the more touched by the invitation. Not from the need to drink - a victory, after all! So, I am mine for them - this is also nice. ”

We drank. Dispersed. No one seems to have noticed. But they found out, they brought it. Vlasov was lifted straight out of bed to the command court. "Long live our court - the most humane court in the world!" - for a few glasses of cognac, drunk a week before the competition, they decided to petition the leadership to ban Vlasov from participating in the Games and send him home, and before making a final decision, boycott the athlete as a warning. True, they tried to “correct the situation”: “Name with whom you drank,” the “judges” said, “and you will be forgiven everything.” Vlasov, of course, did not name anyone.

“... Lord, for one stupidity to pay practically with life, its general break! It's wildness! Then many careers were built on denunciations. Many were swept away from the path (from life too) by denunciations. They will be expelled from the party, chased out of the army - and scratch on all fours through life with a "wolf" characteristic. And be it an isolated case! Lord, look! Why were forces directed and ground down in all decades: not to develop abilities, calm creation, but to overcome the environment, in other words, all these wood lice, this anger, envy, untruth ... "

To be or not to be ... On the one hand - the disease and the stupid "violation of the sports regime." On the other hand, Vlasov's magnificent form. His workouts attracted crowds of spectators and journalists. He tore, squeezed and pushed the bar at these trainings, did not hide his strength for tactical reasons, showed everyone: “Here I am, I am ready to fight, I will take my gold!” And then reports about these trainings appeared in all the leading sports newspapers in the world.

He was forgiven. No, not out of philanthropy, they say, "let's forgive the guy a small sin." "Gold" is what matters. "Gold" in the most prestigious weight category, the title of "the strongest man in the world." In addition, the fight against the Americans, the main ideological opponents. Remove Vlasov, send him home? So, what is next? Of course, the two American weightlifters will take advantage of the great opportunity, in the absence of the main competitor and the favorite, they will play among themselves for the first place. No, this cannot be allowed...

Vlasov was invited by the chairman of the USSR Sports Committee, Romanov. “Forget everything,” he told Yuri. Think of nothing but victory. They won't pull anymore. Get ready to perform…”

Finally... September 10, 1960. “A battle of colossi awaits us,” wrote Italian newspapers. The games are almost over, but the organizers have left the most interesting “for dessert” – heavyweight weightlifting competitions, “the strongest people on the planet”. A huge crowd of spectators gathered at the Palazzeto dello Sport, where weightlifters competed.

Here is Bob Hoffman with his "guys". Americans are calm. It is not known whether they know about Vlasov's misadventures or not. And Yuri is nervous, waiting for the start of the competition: “...A cursed half an hour before the warm-up in the press. Test of strength ahead. Nothing is known until I try the weights. Now wait, wait. Don't let yourself burn. Don't think about hardware. Yes, there, at the warm-up, I learn about strength. I'll try myself with several approaches - and everything is clear. Did the new training methods fail? Didn’t the disease rock it?.. It wasn’t the opposition to the scales that was the most difficult, but the expectation…”

Well, thank God, it has begun ... The first exercise is a bench press. At first, those who did not particularly lay claim to anything and solved their local problems came out on the platform. Weight is slowly growing - 135, 140, 145 kg ... This is not serious yet, the audience is bored. And a lot of people are just sleeping. Some time later, the first athlete went to the platform at nine in the evening. When they wake up, they begin to make noise, drink and eat. And then they smoke. A thousand cigarettes are constantly smoking in the hall, it's hot. Although it was night outside, the Palacetto dello Sport did not have time to cool down. The temperature is over forty. Can you imagine how the athletes felt? Basically, you can. To do this, you need to slightly melt the bath, invite a few friends, all smoke together, and then take at least a two-pound weight and lift it a dozen or two times. Feelings will be just "wonderful" ...

The bench press is a kind of exercise. Here, a lot depends on the central judge, the so-called “fixer” (perhaps that is why in 1973 the bench press was excluded from the program of all official competitions, only the snatch and jerk remained). In the bench press, the athlete must take the barbell to the chest and wait for the clap of the "fixer". And this is where an unscrupulous judge has room for "activity". He can voluntarily delay the pause after lifting the barbell to his chest. In this case, the athlete loses strength and may fail the attempt. In Rome, the American Terpak was the central judge. How will he behave when Vlasov, Bradford and Shemansky meet in a decisive battle? Will he "clamp" the Soviet weightlifter? It was also necessary to think about this and, in spite of everything, to carry out every attempt flawlessly ...

Finally, the main forces joined the battle. Norbert Szemansky in the bench press recorded 170 kg. It was the turn of Bradford and Vlasov. Will someone take the lead? No, in the standings - dual power, Jim and Yuri squeezed 180 kg each.

After the bench press, it became clear who would compete for medals. The Italian Pigayani, who took fourth place in the bench press, was 17.5 kg behind Shemansky and, respectively, 27.5 kg behind Bradford and Vlasov. The trio of contenders seemed to have been decided, but which of this trio will be the first? .. Formally, Vlasov was in the lead, since he was lighter than Bradford (122.7 kg versus 132.8). But even Shemansky still had a chance to win, not to mention from Bradford ... Six months after the Rome Olympiad american team came to Moscow. Jim Bradford came to visit Vlasov. Yuri always respected the "Big Washingtonian": "Athlete from the glorious, fought not in a petty way, from the heart." Several hours of frank conversation, of course, for the most part they recalled Olympic competitions.

“- You and Shemansky thought to beat me in Rome? Vlasov asked his opponent.

– Frankness for frankness. They thought, hoped... Some people thought that youth and inexperience were still playing in you too much, that you would be punished by this, but... as you know, this did not happen. Frankly, I did not think that you would be able to squeeze 180 kg.

“In training, I also squeezed 185,” Vlasov answered, “and, I must admit, the result of 180 kg, on the one hand, made me happy, because it was not inferior to yours, and on the other hand, it made me worry ... "

"Worry" is an understatement. “Nerves were heated to the limit,” Vlasov said. - In the bench, everything is not as expected. How much stronger I was in training! And it's easier, more manageable... Doubts paralyze with conviction, and conviction is weight taken. But where are they, when are you waiting?.. During these hours, competitions are lost. Sometimes the surest victories. There, on the platform, only that which affirms itself earlier, when one on one with itself, is noted. It is not the struggle that erases the power - thoughts. Between the bench press and the jerk, I experienced hateful minutes. And the temperature was delighted, Kalit. Torture!"

In the snatch, the Americans were the first to start. Shemansky and Bradford immediately took 140 kg. Vlasov for a start ordered 145 kg and snatched the barbell very easily. The Americans also overcame the same weight, but they had only one attempt left, and Yuri had two. The ease with which Vlasov took 145 kg confused them. Bradford and Szemansky were initially asked to lift 147.5 kg, but after a few minutes, both of them, after a long meeting with the coaches, refused to approach this weight. Another 2.5 kg was added to the barbell standing on the platform. Both American athletes, not without difficulty, but were able to snatch 150 kg. Vlasov's answer is 155. Before the last jerk exercise, Yuri was 5 kg ahead of Bradford.

Push - Vlasov's "crown", his favorite exercise. A year ago, at the World Championships in Warsaw, it was the push that allowed Yuri to win back what he had lost in the press and snatch and get around Bradford. But now Vlasov is ahead ... Can I calm down? What peace there! Very unpleasant memories of the European Championships in Milan, which took place four months before the Olympics, are still fresh in my memory. It would seem that Vlasov easily won that championship - in the triathlon he took 500 kg, the second prize-winner, Bulgarian Ivan Veselinov, was 40 kg behind him. But what a difficult victory it was! Yuri tried to push 185 kg twice, but both times he could not hold the barbell. And only in the third attempt, with great difficulty, "in desperation", as he himself said, he managed to take the weight. And in Rome, Vlasov was going to start the push with 185 kg. In addition, despite winning the snatch, he was unpleasantly surprised by the high results of the Americans. “The fact that Bradford and Shemansky snatched 150 was like thunder,” Yury Petrovich recalled. “I get it: the Americans are in brilliant shape.” And what about Bradford, is he probably ready to fight?

“- Do you want to know what I was thinking during these hour and a half (in between the jerk and push . - Auth.)? Bradford asked Vlasov during their meeting in Moscow.

- Certainly!

- Oddly enough, but after the bench press and snatch, I laid down my arms. I realized: without a reserve, to fight further against Vlasov in the clean and jerk is a utopia. All I needed now was second place. I decided to push just enough so that Shemansky wouldn't pass me. Seven hours of struggle were super exhausting ... "

Yes, the Big Washingtonian is tired. Sucking out all the juices and nerves, a seven-hour race with iron in a stuffy, smoky hall will exhaust anyone, even such an athlete as Jim Bradford. Only from the second approach, he pushed 177.5 kg, less than recorded in the bench press. With an incredible effort of will in the third approach, Bradford took 182.5 kg. "Big Washington" did everything he could. He repeated Anderson's world record in triathlon - 512.5 kg. And he would have become an Olympic champion if… If not for this fair-haired Russian who stepped onto the platform after him. Bradford understood that Vlasov would take weight, he could not be stopped today ...

The world record fell somehow even casually - the first attempt, no tension, Vlasov just went up to the bar and pushed it without visible effort. There are 520 kg in triathlon - the world record is exceeded by 7.5 kg. Bradford rested, he could do nothing. But there was still Norbert Szemansky. In the first attempt, he clean and jerked 180 kg, and then skipped weights over and over again. Finally, Szemansky asked to put in 192.5 kg. If he wins, he will take second place, and there are all hopes for a third attempt. But no, twice Norbert approached the bar, and both attempts were unsuccessful.

All rivals behind? Yes, here at Palacetto dello Sport, Yuri has no more rivals. But Vlasov must resolve another long-standing dispute. Anderson! Already in the first attempt in the clean and jerk, Yuri surpassed the official world record for triathlon, but “little Paul” still had the last super result - 533 kg, the US record, the unofficial highest world achievement.

Vlasov already Olympic champion and the world record holder, but he still had two attempts left. And he intends to use them to the fullest. Leave the room, feel sorry for yourself, make allowances for fatigue after seven hours of waiting and fighting? No, this is not Vlasov. Yuri asked for the second attempt to install 195 kg. A buzz of surprise and delight swept through the hall. Eat! There are 195 kg in clean and jerk and 530 kg in triathlon! And Vlasov continued his fight, he no longer surprised, but shocked. The voice of the announcer resounded through the hall: "Yuri Vlasov asks to establish 202.5 kilograms." Someone begins to applaud, but then from all sides came: “Hush! Quiet!" That's right, because you can frighten off a miracle, you can’t interfere now with a person who is about to lift weight, who has not yet been conquered by anyone ...

“I am slowly gathering my strength,” Yury Petrovich said about that historic attempt. - I carefully rub the neck and chest with magnesia so that the heavy bar does not slip off. How quiet it is. So quiet that, it seems, you can hear in the tenth row how my heart beats anxiously, how my lungs inhale the hot, stuffy air. Rosin crunches deafeningly underfoot. And then everything moves away somewhere far away. Now the whole world has narrowed for me to the size of a barbell lying motionless on the platform. Well... The projectile, hanging in the air for a moment, falls on my chest. Another effort ... I get up, staggering slightly under the record weight of the bar. A few seconds pass. It's time! The bar breaks away from the chest on which it rested, and begins its upward movement. All this happens in a fraction of a second. Automatically, without control of consciousness, hands instantly pick it up, hold it ... And suddenly, from somewhere far away, it grows louder and louder, a many-voiced one falls: “Aaaaaa!” Because of the noise, I can’t hear the commands of the fixing judge, the American Terpak. But I see his desperate go-ahead. The bar can be lowered. At that moment, when she falls on the floor, bending the boards, three white bulbs flash above me at once. The attempt was counted by the judges unanimously. And here it is approved by the audience. The hall roars with delight. And for me now there is no more beautiful music than this roar ... Listening to it, I get drunk, peer into people's faces. First, second, third rows ... And beyond the sea of raised hands, nothing is visible. And suddenly, unexpectedly pushing everyone aside, a man deftly jumped onto the stage, and other spectators rushed after him. Many hands reach out to me, squeeze, push. People I don't know kiss and hug me. A dream in reality! Intoxicated with irrepressible joy, I suddenly take off into the air, and then I fly down, just like in a dream. No, this is not a dream. These are people from different countries rejoicing at my victory. It was they who picked me up in their arms and carried me out of the hall…”

Something unimaginable was going on in the hall. Pushing the policemen aside, the crowd rushed to the stage. Hundreds of hands reached out to Vlasov. People wanted to touch the “living god”, as if they thought that from this touch his incredible power would pass to them. Even the musicians of the Italian military orchestra could not stand it. They are supposed to stand and at the appointed time to play a solemn march in honor of the winner, but what orders can there be if there were at least a hundred generals in the Palazzetto dello Sport, they would still leave their places and, together with everyone, shouted: “Bravo! Bravissimo!"

What happened next looked more like a triumph for a Roman general than a victory for a Soviet weightlifter. Imagine: three in the morning, sleeping Rome and a crowd of people with torches, carrying Vlasov in their arms. The next day (more precisely, on the same day, because the competition ended well after midnight) Vlasov was recognized on the streets, asked for an autograph, listened like a prophet. And here is how some media spoke about him and his speech.

“Gazetta dello sport”: “Not to mention the strength and “technique”, what will, courage and endurance Vlasov had to show in order to lift 202.5 kg in clean and jerk around three o’clock in the morning (after seven hours of intense, exhausting competition) - a weight inaccessible to anyone in the world. This is a heroic sporting feat ... "

Agence France Presse: “The hero of the last day of weightlifting competitions - and this day can rightfully be called the most brilliant of all - was the Russian hero Vlasov. It was he who inherited the golden Olympic laurels of the American "crane" Paul Anderson. Having set Olympic records in the bench press and snatch, Vlasov did even better. After he lifted 202.5 kg in great style, the hall seemed to be seized by a general madness. Dozens of spectators rushed to the platform and solemnly carried away the Russian victor in their arms ... "

The Swedish newspaper Idrottsbladet: “Vlasov is young, harmoniously built, damn strong and, moreover, sparkles with intellect ... Vlasov is a sensation of sensations! His performance was so amazing, so fabulously extraordinary that not a single event in the history of the Olympic Games can compare with it. In world sports, no one has been so great and inaccessible. He is the standard of a true athlete and a brilliant representative of his people.”

Even Bob Hoffman did not stand aside. That's really from whom it was difficult to expect praise. But, on the other hand, Hoffman sincerely loved the "iron game". And even if it was not an American who won, how can one not admire what Vlasov did: “This is amazing! I am sure that Vlasov has not yet reached his "ceiling". It won’t surprise me if he soon makes 560-570 kilograms (it happened . - Auth.). And most importantly, he is not a “robot”, but a real exemplary athlete who consciously and thoroughly comprehended the intricacies of the “iron game”.

“The ideal weightlifter of all times and peoples”, “the strongest man on Earth”, “an athlete from the 21st century” - as soon as Vlasov was not called after the Rome Olympics, what titles were not awarded. And quite rightly so. He deserved all these titles. For five years, from 1960 to 1964, he won everything - World, European, USSR championships, all the competitions in which he took part. Vlasov seized power in heavyweight, and it seemed that he would not give it to anyone until he himself decided to leave ...

“Is it all? I will not see the hall, the glow of lights?! Everything, now everything! I stepped to the window and threw the silver Olympic medal into the window. What's a stupid reward? For all the years in the fury of the search, overcoming, the cruelty of the struggle and ruthlessness towards oneself - is this a silver circle on a colorful ribbon ?! I renounced this award, did not recognize it.

I remember that night clearly to this day. The loneliness of this night Black, squelching darkness outside the windows.

That night after the defeat...

I felt funny to myself. How, alone, to build all the immensity of power, to bend directly all the paths to power - and choke on it!

I denied fatigue as a weakness of the spirit. I endowed strength, training with a sense of animation. I invented, invented ... I took this game too seriously in force. After all, for everyone it is just fun, pleasant hours watching TV or reading a sports newspaper. They pulled me by the cords of pride - and I grimaced in the attempts of records ... "

“You take a closer look, Yura,” the coach said to Vlasov. “This crest is not a gift for you.” But Vlasov did not hear the coach. Didn't want to hear. Who is Zhabotinsky? "Second number", he was taken in Tokyo by accident. Vlasov was calm. He is "the strongest man on the planet", he will sweep away anyone who dares to compete with him. And suddenly… For a long time, year after year, he built his castle, his world, and suddenly everything collapsed… Khokhols – they are cunning…

Renowned American coach weightlifting Bob Hoffman wrote about Yuri Vlasov

“... You were born to help the Man to know himself. Believe that we all have an infinite supply of strength. That each of us is able to work miracles .. "

Only two lines, but they contain the whole truth about Yuri Petrovich Vlasov. All his life sports career life principles is a manual for the young (and not only) on the harmonious development of a person. And not only physically, but also spiritually.

I understand that no one will tell you about Vlasov better than Vlasov, but I am writing this post not only for you, but, first of all, for myself. It is I who need what I understood by reading and studying Vlasov to be firmly planted in my head and heart. What happens faster when you start to formulate thoughts out loud, and even better on paper.

The strongest man on the planet. Agree, friends, that most of us perceive this phrase from the point of view of physical strength. He raised more, threw further ... But, if we talk about Yuri Vlasov, then we must keep in mind not only physical, but also spiritual strength. Willpower and spirit.

Let's start with physical strength.

Yuri Petrovich, are you an alien?

Strange, but the life of Yuri Petrovich before the Saratov Suvorov School is closed behind 7 locks. Maybe because his father was a GRU colonel? Everything can be.

But, there is something from the "classified" biography. It is known that Yuri Vlasov was born on December 5, 1935 in the city of Makeevka (Donetsk region). We know about the parents that my mother was in charge of the library, and my father was a diplomat, a GRU colonel. From his mother, the boy was given a love of books and literature in general. But, Yura saw himself as a diplomat-intelligence officer, like a father.

Information, of course, is not enough. And we can only guess what exercises the boy did, what loads he gave himself, so that at the age of 14 he had the second male rank in athletics.

But, how the future Olympic champion formed himself over the years of study at the school is worthy of the most scrupulous study, expert assessments and a treatise called “Passion for Strength”.

Here are some results of the cadet of the Suvorov Military School Yuri Vlasov.

  • Push-ups on parallel bars - 40
  • Pull-ups - 30 (with a weight of more than 90 kg)
  • Long jump - 6 m
  • Throwing a grenade (700 gr) - more than 60 meters
  • Squatting with a barbell weighing 200 kg - 8 times per approach (As Yuri Petrovich wrote: “this was within the power, only the heavyweight champion of the country”). After several years of training, the weight of the bar increased to 300 kg.

This is how I look at all these results of a 20-year-old young man and think more and more about the gaps in Vlasov's biography. Yuri Petrovich, are you an alien? Let's hope not.

And now, a very important point!

I want to say that all these results were given to Yuri Petrovich relatively easily. Yes, our own training system was developed and there were exorbitant loads for mere mortals. But, for Vlasov, it was physical education. He did not think about records and the championship. He calmly raised his strength without jerks. Big sport started later. And when sports begin, physical education ends. What happens when the sport is over? More on that below.

Big sport. Ten Vlasov

And then began a rapid march to the championship. There were plenty of incentives. Including, as it seemed to everyone then, the “eternal” records of the American Paul Anderson. This man deservedly admired the whole world. In 1956, he raised the bar of strength to such a height that many athletes did not even think about it.

Judge for yourself.

Vlasov did not think about this bar either. He simply admired the talent of this man-strength. And he didn’t even have in his thoughts that already in 1959 it seemed unshakable, it would collapse.

Sports are just leisure

After graduating from the Suvorov School, Vlasov continued his education at the Zhukovsky Air Force Engineering Academy.

Unlike the school, training has become more focused. In a sense, weightlifting became the sport that Yuri was more and more interested in.

But even here, most of the time was devoted to studying. Training only in free time. I want to say that, according to Vlasov himself, he had enough leisure. Studying was easy, there was no family, bad habits too.

The results came very quickly. Already in the second year of study, Vlasov entered the top five weightlifters in Moscow. Not a single competition was held without a future champion. He threw a grenade, pushed the shot and, of course, the barbell. And what is important, he did not fall below the prize-winning place.

And meanwhile, sports victories were not an end in themselves. He loved sports, but did not consider it his life's work. First of all study, literature, history. What about "gold"? And then gold.

The strongest man

1957 - at the age of 22, Vlasov is officially the master of sports of the USSR. He is already training at CSKA and Suren Petrosovich Bogdasarov is becoming his coach.

From that moment, Vlasov's decade began. Records fell one after another. First allied, and then global.

For Vlasov, there were no idols. He stopped being afraid of names, but simply went forward and became stronger.

  • 1957 - Union record in the clean and jerk (185 kg), and then in the snatch (144.5 kg). Moreover, Vlasov did this surprisingly easily for himself. He just didn't feel the weight of the bar.
  • 1959 - First world record in the clean and jerk - 197.5 kg. It was installed in the "House of Officers of the Leningrad Military District". What happened next is hard to imagine. After all, Anderson's most formidable record has been broken!

All! Stop! From that moment on, for Vlasov, there was a reassessment of values. He realized that he had taken on the burden of the strongest man in the world. And she is very hard. This title, in addition to honor and glory, requires protection. No matter what the cost, but Vlasov had to constantly prove to himself and others that he received this title not by chance.

  • 1959 - Victory at the World Championships in Warsaw after a five-hour fight with two American athletes. Pay attention, 5 hours of struggle, and our hero came to his senses within a few months. But he came.

XVII Summer Olympic Games in Rome. 1960 "Vlasov Olympics"

And finally, 1960 is a triumph. You can't say otherwise. Until now, the Olympics in Rome are considered the “Vlasov Olympics”. Yes, you have to see it to understand. Unfortunately, television of the 60s cannot fully reflect the atmosphere of those competitions, but we can still see something (there is a video at the end of the article).

Brief report and summary.

The fight unfolded between two Americans (Jim Bradford and Norbert Shemansky) and Yuri Vlasov.

The battle was, as they say, for life .... From 21:00 to 3:00. Nothing to say, worthy opponents.

Press. Vlasov shares 1st and 2nd place with Bradford - 180 kilograms. Shemansky is the third.

Jerk. The Soviet weightlifter is the first with a result of 155 kg. Bradford was five kg behind and Shemansky was fifteen.

Push - denouement.

Bradford raises 182.5. This is new Olympic record in the clean and jerk and a repeat of Anderson's world record in triathlon (512.5). An attempt to raise 185 is a failure.

Vlasov takes over.

1 approach. On the bar 185. Weight taken. Vlasov is the champion of the Olympic Games with a new world record in triathlon (520 kg)

2 approach. The bar is 10 heavier! kilogram. The hall is buzzing. Eat! Purely! Another world record in triathlon (530 kg)

3 approach. 202.5. To be honest, I can't imagine what's going on in the hall. The audience has already witnessed a miracle. And here it is ... .. And Vlasov can no longer be stopped. Weight taken. World record in the clean and jerk and the world record in triathlon (537.5 kg)!!!

And silence. And then the explosion of the stands. Temperamental Italian spectators rushed to the platform. And even the musicians left their seats to greet Soviet champion. Bravo, Yuri! Bravissimo!

"Walking on Gold"

The next pre-Olympic cycle for Yuri Petrovich is walking on the "gold". World Championships in Vienna, Stockholm, Budapest. There are no rivals, except for Norbet Shemansky. World records fell one after another. As a result, man-strength raised the bar in triathlon to 580 kg.

In general, Yuri Petrovich came to the Olympics in Tokyo as a clear favorite. And he needed a victory for two reasons:

  1. First: This is the Olympic Games. That says it all
  2. And secondly: Vlasov was ending his career. And, you know, he wanted to leave undefeated.

And, nevertheless, setting 2 next world records, he lost. Lost to his teammate, future weightlifting star Leonid Zhabotinsky.

The second decade of Yuri Petrovich Vlasov. Revenge of the body.

In 1966, Vlasov finally left the big sport. And I return to the question: "What then?"

There is a whole galaxy of Soviet and modern athletes who worked wonders in their finest hour. They set records, won the most prestigious competitions and inscribed their names in the halls of fame.

But, the time came, and it was necessary to leave. Care is always stressful. And for a professional athlete, this stress turns into a real test of physical and spiritual strength. And a lot of people fail this test.

I'm not talking about "emptiness". Although, this bitter feeling took possession of so many legends. You are no longer needed, you are gone. Terrible feeling. But Vlasov has passed this cup. He has another problem.

I'm talking about a "deferred penalty", about the body's revenge for past overloads. In my opinion, what Vlasov did together with a coach with his body cannot even be called overloads. This is self-torture, sadism towards oneself.

A lot of interesting and instructive things can be found in it. Anyway, I got it. And you know what? There are now programs about extraordinary people who can do what others cannot do. So. There are always credits: "Do not try to repeat!".

And, despite Yuri Petrovich's confidence that everyone can overcome illness and old age, it's hard for me to believe in it. Not every. Vlasovs, dear, Yuri Petrovich, do not become, Vlasovs are born. I think so.

On this, perhaps, everything. You can talk about the Vlasov phenomenon for a long time. But, let's not forget that Yuri Petrovich is a wonderful writer. And the way he describes his life is much more interesting to read than my efforts.

So, friends, download, read, study

Sincerely, Yuri Melamud and ""
