Ice skating instruction. How to Learn to Skate: Practical Tips for Beginners

It's nice to watch someone skate beautifully and masterfully on the ice. If you don't like staying on the "mainland" while your friends are having fun at the rink, then this article is for you. Learning to skate is not that difficult, but there are some features that need to be taken into account. Skating is quite a traumatic sport, so the sooner you learn to balance, the better. Our tips will help you quickly and correctly learn how to do it yourself.

How to dress

IN big cities equipped skating rinks are not uncommon. In entertainment centers, you can visit the skating rink at any time of the year. Here you will be given skates suitable for you and will conduct the necessary safety briefing and basic rules of conduct.

It is necessary to dress for the skating rink in such a way that it does not hurt when falling, but the clothes do not hinder movement. Sport style this is the best fit for this. It is recommended to wear a knitted hat on the head, and protect hands with gloves. If the skating rink is located in a covered pavilion, then it is quite possible to do without a jacket - it will be hot from constant movements.

What skates to choose

Skates for self-study are of two types: for figure skating and for hockey. Curly ones are heavier, they have a small heel, in front of the blade there is a row of teeth for performing various elements of figure skating.

For men, hockey-type skates are most suitable. It will be easiest to learn on such skates - they are lighter and more stable. There are skates designed for free skating. They resemble curly blades, but may not have serrations at the front of the blades. It is they who are most often issued at paid rinks.

When you rent skates, the first thing to consider is how worn they are. Such boots need to be laced more carefully and tightly. You should not choose shoes two sizes larger, they will not fit tightly, which will lead to a greater likelihood of falls. Socks should be thick. Once you have your skates on, lace them up and stand up.

Wait a couple of minutes, check if the boots are tight. Move your foot to get an idea of how the boots fit your foot and how good the lacing is. If you did everything well, then nothing should be pressed or hanging anywhere. Remember, in a securely laced boot, the heel should wrap around the heel well and comfortably.

If you come to an equipped ice rink, then be prepared for the fact that skates can be given to you depending on your size. Usually figure skates are issued for small sizes, and hockey skates for large ones.

How to get on the ice

Attention! On any rink, everyone moves counterclockwise. Try to stick to this rule, otherwise you will create a danger - you can simply be knocked down.

Caution and sensible advice will always help you avoid injuries and quickly get used to the rink.

Stepping on the ice for the first time, remember the main rule - the legs should be slightly bent. This will redistribute the load and create balance.

Later you will easily go straight ahead. And again, it’s worth repeating - it’s easiest to start learning on hockey skates, because their blades are wider than curly ones.

So let's start:

  1. Come out onto the ice, holding on to the side. Move a little to the side and stand at the side for a while to get used to the skates and ice. If your legs are moving apart - just tighten your thigh muscles and bring your legs together, while the blades should be parallel to each other.
  2. When your feet get used to the ice, release the side and stand next to it without any support. Do not be afraid, the side is always there and you can go through more than one circle holding on to it.
  3. Next, you need to try to make a couple of sliding movements. Here, the main thing is to learn to move in the direction where it is necessary, and not where it “carries”. Don't try to walk on the ice, but start gliding forward.
  4. You need to push off the ice with the edge of the skate, and not with its toe. This is especially true if you have figure skates. Do not try to push off with the teeth - these teeth are for difficult pirouettes, and you are unlikely to succeed so far.

How to glide

Many people assume that roller skating and ice skating require the same skills. However, this is not at all the case. Of course, if you already master the skates it will be noticeably easier. Below we consider the scheme of sliding on skates:

  1. Bring your legs together and place your feet parallel to each other. Spread your arms out to the sides for better balance.
  2. Keep your knees slightly bent and your back straight. Rotate your right (jogging) leg at a 45-degree angle to your left leg.
  3. Push off with your right foot to the side and at the same time transfer your weight to your left. In this case, transfer the body weight to the supporting leg, slightly bent at the knee.
  4. Pushing off, you will start moving with your left foot. Try to keep it half-bent.
  5. Now take your right foot off the ice and bring it to your left. Do not raise the right heel too far up - the teeth on the toe should not touch the ice.
  6. After putting your right foot to your left, you can freely and slowly roll to your heart's content. Keep your knees slightly bent and your back straight.
  7. Next, start sliding with your left foot and repeat the whole scheme again.

Your task is, as soon as the movement slows down, learn to evenly push off the ice with either your right or left foot alternately. This will allow you to roll smoothly on the ice. Over time, the pauses between pushes will become smaller, and you will stop paying attention to the movement - everything will happen by itself.

If you can keep your balance well, learning to skate will be much easier for you. You can start the movement from the third position: the legs are at a 90-degree angle, with the pushing leg behind. After you push off, immediately transfer your weight to the other leg and roll on it. The push leg is moved forward and placed perpendicular to the supporting leg. Push off with the foot behind you and keep going. Spread your arms out to the sides for balance.

Learn to slow down

Now your task is . Do not do this with the teeth on the toe of the blade - this way you will fall faster, but you will not be able to slow down.

There are several most common braking options. Learning to brake will not be so easy - for this you need to already confidently keep your balance. Usually beginners just get to the side or just stop pushing off and gradually stop.

The best option for emergency braking for beginners is the "plough". In motion, spread your legs shoulder-width apart and bend your knees strongly, then slightly back your body and turn your socks inward and tilt your legs slightly at the ankle. So, you slow down and stop. Most often, it is more convenient to slow down with one foot - start braking, but turn inward not both legs, but one.

How to fall and rise

Falls on ice occur mainly while moving, and the force of the impact is damped by inertia, and besides, the ice is not as hard as asphalt. So it doesn't hurt as much as falling on the pavement.

When falling, you need to try to group. As you fall, bend your knees, relax and try to fall to one side. Take care of your head, if you fall forward, then tilt it back, when falling back, raise your head and press your chin to your chest.

After the fall, get up faster and try to drive off to the side. To get up, kneel down and put your skate toe (teeth) on the ice. Gently straighten one leg and then the other.

You will learn all the initial skating techniques very quickly - literally in one workout. Further, your task is to hone the skill of movements and gradually learn new techniques.

Ice skating is pretty popular view entertainment and sports. They are used by both children and adults. If you still haven't even thought about joining his fan base, it's never too late to start. Skating, as well as drawing, dancing, singing, you can start learning at any age.

For example, Sofya Kovalevskaya, a famous mathematician, first went on the ice as an adult, and she liked it so much that after a couple of years they began to consider her a professional figure skater.

Skating also improves body control, coordination, posture, makes movements more expressive and more plastic.

The right choice of skates

  • There are skates different prices, types and sizes, but you should purchase regular ones for beginners. Often they are not very expensive.
  • When choosing skates, you need to pay attention to the size, do not buy more, it is better to buy a size smaller, because the tighter they fit the foot, the easier it will be for you to manage them.
  • Also, if the skates are too big for you, there is a chance of rubbing corns. But if you have already purchased a little more than you need, then you can put on a woolen sock or buy special sports socks.
  • You should also pay attention to Velcro, hooks and bartacks. The more of them, the tighter the leg will be fixed. And always tighten it tight!

Starting to learn to skate

  1. You are on ice. If you are not confident in yourself, then it is better to stay close to the side.
  2. Bend your knees first, because you won't be able to go very far with straight legs. There are teeth on the skates, but until you learn to ride with dignity, in no case do you need to push them off. In the future, if you want to become a professional skater, then these teeth will be needed.
  3. Now you will not interfere with improvisation. In general, it is necessary to push off with the edge of the free leg. In skating, the main condition is the correct repulsion, so pay a lot of attention to this.

How to move?

It's no more difficult than balancing. If you are standing, then you need to start moving at the expense of repulsion with a push leg from the ice. That is, you should turn one leg outward, push off with it and then transfer all the weight to the other leg. How to start is shown in the figure below.

The left picture shows a start with the left foot. That is, it is precisely it that needs to be placed at an angle and pushed off.

In the right picture, you can see the start with the right foot. She does everything exactly the same. Try not to start moving with your skates parallel. So you won't get anything. It is much easier to move around by alternating legs, this is what skating is.

Push off with your foot, ride on the other, when the movement starts to slow down, immediately push off with the foot you were riding on, and then just alternate. Below you can see the diagram normal skating.

It is important that you ride exactly as drawn, and to achieve this, you need practice. There are no other ways. In all sports, you need to use the trial and fall method. Over time, you will see that you are getting better and better.

Left dash

On skating rinks, main direction of travel counterclock-wise, we will begin to disassemble it. When you learn the left run, then you can quickly master the right one.

If you have already learned skating, now you can learn transitions. When you eat and want to roll, you need a little lean in left side while maintaining balance. If you see that you are starting to lose balance, then immediately you need to move your right foot over the left. You will feel that you are putting your foot up so as not to fall. When the legs are crossed, you should again continue to alternate them, and move in an arc. The diagram is shown below.

Movement in reverse

This is a rather complex element, you will have to tinker for a long time. You are standing backwards in the direction of travel. To start, you need to do the same actions that you do when you eat forward, only the opposite is true. The diagram is shown below.

That is, if left leg is pushing, then put it at an angle and push off. The only difference from moving forward is that you need to push off a little in an arc, and this can be seen from the figure below.

You should move back, alternating jerks in an arc, leaving the body weight in the middle. Then you can alternate back movements with right and left dashes. And the figure below shows the entire scheme of movement back. You see, there are successive movements in arcs left - right.

How to slow down and fall on skates

If you still fell, then you do not need to try to get up, pushing off with your hands. It is necessary to kneel, and only then gently rise. When you fall, you should group, and fall on your side rather than on your back.

After the fall, do not immediately continue to move, it is better to go to the side and catch your breath normally.

Finally

If you really decide to learn how to skate, then it is worth paying for an instructor who will tell you and show you all the moves and help them learn quickly.

Ice skating is becoming more and more popular and fashionable pastime. Both adults and children can come here, both alone and with the whole family or in the company of friends. But many are terrified of the possibility of falling on the ice, or worse, knocking someone else down in the process of learning. In reality, everything is much simpler and easier than it seems at first glance.

It is believed that the first lessons of skating can be started as early as 3-4 years. If you plan to send your child to sports section It's best to start at that age. But do not despair if you are already much older: it is never too late for an adult to learn to skate from scratch!

When visiting the skating rink for the first time, do not rush to immediately be on the ice, it is better to walk a little on your own in skates, getting used to them.

As soon as the balance point is found, go out onto the ice. Holding on to the side with one hand, try to slide, keeping your balance as much as possible without the help of the side. It is ideal to find someone who can help you - a coach or a friend who will take you by the arm after rolling a few laps.

Take the main position: the knees are slightly bent, the body is tilted forward, the main goal of this exercise is to find a point of balance and maintain balance, remembering your sensations.

When you feel more confident, ask to turn your back, rolling in this position. If you can't see where you're going, it's harder to balance, but it's easier to feel your body and its signals.

At the first training session, it is better not to be zealous, limiting yourself to 15–20 minutes. A longer approach will end with krepatura, even if you lead an active lifestyle, and your muscles are accustomed to stress. Most often, the knee joints suffer from unaccustomed.

What do you pay attention to in the first lesson:

  • Correct body position (basic position);
  • Point of balance and balance.

Once you get used to the new sensations, you will subconsciously remember how to properly hold yourself on the ice. And very soon you will learn to skate freely.

Basic technique

Whatever you plan to do in the future, correct technique rides are always set in stages and gradually. Take your time: in the second lesson, start at the side, moving your legs, remembering how to properly balance on the ice. Remembering the basics, go to the warm-up:

  1. Move forward in small steps without the help of the side. The legs work as if you were walking in ordinary shoes - this helps to learn how to balance.
  2. As soon as you feel that you can and start to get stable, return to the side and try to do the same, but already turning your back forward.
  3. With the help of the side, do a few squats parallel to the ice, leaning forward a little.

As soon as you have learned to keep your balance on the ice, you move on to the direct teaching of skating technique. Always start with a herringbone walk. To do this, diagonally put one foot forward, and push off with the inner edge of the hind leg. By alternating the feet in this way, you seem to draw a "figure eight", synchronously spreading and bringing them together - this is a stable technique that allows you to quickly learn how to ride and feel on the ice. You can move both face and back forward.

When the forward movement is mastered, they move on to learning to turn. To turn from the herringbone movement, it is enough to bring the feet parallel to each other and, bending your knees, lean slightly into the right side. To shorten the trajectory in the turn, push outside leg, not internal. The degree of rotation is controlled by the tilt force.

And of course you need to be able to properly brake and make stops on skates. When you are already confidently performing the “eights”, then braking should not cause any particular difficulties: for this, it is enough to spread your legs to the sides, as if you were moving forward, but then sharply bring them together at one point, resting your heels on the ice. Practice braking close to the side, being able to secure yourself.

Another more difficult technique is to rest the heel of the foot perpendicular to its trajectory. When braking, take the basic position: the body is tilted forward, the knees are slightly bent!

Learning how to fall correctly and safely

No matter how hard you try, you will have to fall on the ice. You can overcome your fear by knowing the principles of the right fall technique. The best injury prevention is learning how to fall properly.

The most basic thing to remember on the ice is that if you lose your balance, you are unlikely to regain it. The higher the speed, the less chance. Therefore, do not try to grab, slow down on other people, but try to slow down as much as possible and group the whole body before falling.

For a safe fall, you need to bend your knees as much as possible, pressing your hands to the body “at the seams”. By exposing your hand during a fall (a purely reflex gesture that needs to be controlled), you risk seriously injuring or even breaking it.

They always fall sideways, ideally on the thigh: this is the strongest part in our body, and even at high speed with such a fall, you face a maximum of a couple of bruises and minor bruises. And never swing your skates off balance. The skate has a sharp base, which can seriously injure people near you, do not forget about it.

But they get up after falling from a kneeling position. If there is no one around to help and you are unsure of your ability to get up, move towards the railing to get to your feet.

Experience comes with time: the more time you spend skating, the faster you learn to ride. Ice skating is great way relieve stress, have a good time and improve your health, because classes will teach you to find balance and maintain balance in any position of the body.

Learning to ice skate

It's never too late to get on your skates. This attractive sport is perfect not only for adults, but also for children. Moreover, for its development you do not need any "special skills".

It's actually pretty easy to learn how to skate. Moreover, thanks to this sport, the ability to master own body and coordination of movements. So what's the right way to skate? Answers to all important questions - you will find in this article.

What is the best way to prepare for your first ride?

When you come to the skating rink for the first time in your life, it is unlikely that you will prepare in advance for this. Enough for your first time - to rent skates. Such a step will be the most reasonable, because, skating for the first time, you will be able to understand whether you want to continue skating in the future or not. But if you liked this species sports, then you will have to buy good skates for yourself. Moreover, the whole point is not even hygiene, but the fact that the blades of the skates require careful maintenance, and at the box office this moment, as a rule, is given much less attention, on the rental skates the groove on the blade is smoother, which causes some problems with the right repulsion . That is why you should take care of your own budget in advance, because in the future you will also need a special backpack for skates and tools for sharpening.

So, for the first skating, you can choose one of 3 models for yourself:

  • Curly. They have special teeth on the toe of the blade. They are soft and designed to perform various pirouettes and turns. Usually they are used only by professionals.
  • Hockey. They are lighter than figured ones, but in some places they are additionally reinforced, thanks to which it is possible to avoid any injuries when a puck hits them.
  • For free riding. They are designed for hockey or figure skating no "fit". Sufficiently warm, soft, they have no protection (special) of the ankle and legs. This is the most the best option for a quiet ride, if you are not going to perform any difficult tricks.

What is the best way to wear skates?

On the skating rink, it is best to wear not thick, but warm socks that will be comfortable in your everyday shoes. Under warm socks, skates are selected one size or half a size larger.

If you've laced your skate boot properly, it should fit snugly around your instep. It should be remembered that with any movements - your leg should not dangle inside the skate, because otherwise you will simply lose your balance. Also, do not overtighten the laces at the top of the skate boot. Your feet should feel comfortable and not be pinched by the boots. If you tie your skates correctly, you will not be able to tear your heel off the sole of the skate.

For calm skating, it is permissible to use clip-on skates. But, if you actively move, for example, play hockey, then the clips will most likely come unfastened at the most inopportune moment.

We are on skates. First steps

Just stepping on the rink - it is best to hold on to the side in the first minutes. Try to feel the ice, stand on it for a few seconds. Thanks to this, the first fear will disappear in you, as well as the desire to constantly stick to the side.

The next step is to let go of the edge. The most important thing is to stop being afraid, you need to get rid of stiffness. After that, also stand for a while (no more than a few seconds) to feel the ice.

After that, you can proceed to the first steps. Most likely initially you will not slide, but just skate. And this correct solution, because you should "catch" the balance on the ice. And it won't hurt anything if you fall. The most important thing is to try and get rid of your own fear. Only in this way will you be able to gain courage for the most important stage.

So, as soon as you understand that you are ready, you should begin to perform the first slide. Push off with the edge of the skate, while transferring body weight to the other leg. Just do not try to push off with the toe of the skate, because such movements should only come from the edge.

Sliding can conditionally be divided into several steps:

  • Stand up straight: feet parallel to each other, and legs together.
  • Straighten your back, bend your knees, turn your right leg slightly to the side.
  • Push off with the inner edge of the right skate, completely transfer the weight of the body during the push to the left leg.
  • Without straightening your knee, you should ride on a bent left leg forward.
  • Pull the right leg to the left leg, while the right one - in this period of time should not touch the ice.
  • Skate forward on both feet, but remember that on figure skates, the toe tines should not touch the ice.
  • Repeat these steps with the left leg.

There is one more piece of advice. At least in the first couple, you should forget that there is ice and skate blades under your feet. Try to abstract and reduce the importance of this moment. Thanks to this, your body will be able to more easily adapt to new conditions.

How to turn on skates?

It becomes clear to everyone that it is impossible to skate straight all the time. If you need to turn, you need to move your shoulder forward, pushing off with your right naked, and point your body in the direction of the turn. When turning with the foot that is closer to the turn (inside), you need to push off a little weaker.

Learning to slow down

Most in a simple way braking is that you reach the side and brake. But, sometimes situations arise when you are driving in the center of the rink and you suddenly need to stop so as not to collide with someone. For a smooth stop, you can simply stop pushing off and drive until the speed is completely reduced. But what to do when emergency braking is required? The most popular method among beginners is the plow. When moving, you need to spread your legs a little wider than your shoulders, bend your legs strongly, push the body slightly back, and wrap the toes of the skates inward. And it is not at all as difficult as it might seem at first glance. Try these steps first near the curb to make sure the movements are correct. Over time, some learn to brake with one foot.

How to get up on skates after a fall?

So, it's also important to know how to get up properly after you've fallen. In no case should you perform the same actions that you do while on the ground. It won't work here. First you should kneel, then rest against the ice with your skate and gently straighten your knee. It is generally recommended to learn how to stand up before you start riding.

Remember that your body will receive a high load at first, so experts recommend not spending more than 45 minutes on the rink. For some beginners, 20 minutes will be enough. Also, do not go to the rink on trembling or "cotton" legs. After a working day, it is also not recommended to go out on the ice and learn to skate. It is best to choose a day off for your own debut.
