Hockey club "Torpedo" was founded in 1946. V.S. Konovalenko (4300 seats). Since the 2007-2008 season. the team performs at the renovated arena of the Sports Palace of Trade Unions, which, after reconstruction, can accommodate 5,500 spectators as required by the regulations.

The first performance of the Gorky team at the allied level refers to the 1947/48 season. "Torpedo" (Gorky) then took part in the first championship of the USSR among the teams of the second group (an analogue of the current Major League). The Gorky team took fourth place in their debut season, letting Dynamo (Sverdlovsk), Dzerzhinets (Chelyabinsk) and Dynamo (Moscow Region) teams forward, but bypassed Dynamo Kuibyshev, Lokomotiv from Vologda and their Arkhangelsk teammates. The following season, the Torpedo team took the last, fifth place in their zone.
The first serious success for car manufacturers came in the spring of 1954, when Torpedo finished second in the second-tier championship after Dynamo Novosibirsk and got the right to play in the first group (an analogue of the current Superleague). The debut was not successful. Seven points and last, 10th place. But the team remained in the first group thanks to the expansion of class A to 15 teams, which included Khimik (Voskresensk) and Spartak Moscow.
By the end of the fifties, the team gradually began to become a serious rival not only for the middle peasants and outsiders, but also for the leaders of our hockey. In the spring of 1960, the competition was held according to the playoff system. At the beginning of spring, the quarter-final matches took place. CSKA came to Gorky. Frankly speaking, the owners of the ice had practically no chance of winning. The players of CSKA also felt it, having decided to easily beat the Gorky team.
The great CSKA player Nikolai Sologubov said in a private conversation with journalist Vladimir Dvortsov: "Torpedo" against CSKA is the same as with a knife on a steam locomotive. "But the venerable hockey player did not calculate the strength of the young team - Gorky won 6:5, and during the game the hosts led with an indecent score for CSKA - 6: 3. The next day, the teams had to play the second match of the series, which was played up to two victories. A sensation was brewing. But then bad weather intervened. The ice became completely unsuitable for play due to the positive temperature. The match at first it was postponed twice, and canceled altogether at 8 pm CSKA immediately left the stadium, and only then was it announced to the overcrowded stands that the game was being postponed to Sokolniki. all the tickets left. Riots began, the CSKA locker room was looted, where part of the army left their things. And then a fire broke out at the stadium.
The team of the automobile plant clearly demonstrated its real strength already in the fall of 1960, when Torpedo won a rather prestigious tournament for the prize of the Soviet Sport newspaper at that time, defeating Spartak Moscow in the decisive match, which defeated CSKA in the semifinals. And in March 1961 the first came (and this moment last) a major success - "Torpedo" won the silver of the USSR championship.
Then for the first time one of the sets of medals went to a non-Moscow club. Viktor Konovalenko
The famous goalkeeper of the USSR national team and the Gorky "Torpedo", nicknamed "Russian Bear". Two-time Olympic champion, eight-time champion world and two-time European champion. At the end of his career in the national team, he handed over his jersey with number 20 to the then young goalkeeper Vladislav Tretiak. In 1970 he was recognized as the best hockey player in the world and the best hockey player in the USSR.
Viktor Konovalenko was the only coach, and before that - a player in the composition of HC "Torpedo", who was allowed to smoke openly. In the 80s, the leaders of Soviet hockey also had to reckon with Torpedo. Season 2007-2008
In 2007, having taken the first place in the Major League and having won the main trophy for the second time, the car manufacturers returned to the Super League. In the last season of the Super League 2007-2008, the team performed unsuccessfully, finishing in the last 20th place. But since 2008, a decision was made to create the Kontinental Hockey League. Since then, the Nizhny Novgorod Torpedo has been part of the KHL.
Season 2008-2009

Season 2009-2010
In the second season of the KHL 2009/2010, the team made a powerful selection. Foreign players such as Jaroslav Bednarzh, Joachim Linstrem, Bernd Brückler, Angel Krstev were invited to the HC "Torpedo". However, despite a successful off-season and winning the Nizhny Novgorod Region Governor's Cup, Torpedo failed to qualify for the Playoffs, finishing 9th in the conference and 17th in the overall standings.

Season 2010-2011

Season 2011-2012
In the fourth season of the KHL, the head coach changed in the team. A Finnish specialist was invited to this post. Under his leadership, the club held the regular season very confidently and smoothly and, despite numerous injuries to the base players - Ryan Veske, Vitaliy Koval, Matt Ellison and Dmitry Makarov dropped out of the team for several months, "Torpedo" for 9 matches before the end of the regular season provided place in the playoffs.

Torpedo scored one of the most reliable defenses in the league (fifth overall in goals conceded), which was explained both by the skillful organization of the game by Kari Jalonen and the outstanding performance of the team's goalkeeper Vitaliy Koval, who became the league's best in terms of reliability coefficient (1.75 in 30 matches played). In the first round, Torpedo managed to break the resistance of Dynamo Riga in a series of 7 games, but in the second round they lost in 6 games to Dynamo Moscow.
