DC United advanced to the MLS playoffs. The last matches of the Champions League play-off round: who will advance to the group stage? Who did not qualify for the playoffs

The second round of the 2018 FIFA World Cup has ended. Now it has become known how many teams come out of the group and fight for victory in the final. So, out of 32 teams that applied for participation in international competitions, only 16 came to 1/8.

This means that the decisive tournaments will be decisive in choosing the winner. The successful start of the matches provided Russia, as the host, with the right to continue the tournaments.

How the best teams were selected

All teams were divided into 8 groups, each was named according to the first letters of the English alphabet. Under the corresponding letter, 4 teams played. From the entire group, only those teams that scored the most points were admitted to the final competitions.

If main criterion turned out to be equivalent - they considered the number of goals scored or conceded. When, according to the calculations, the teams are on equal positions, preference is given to the country whose team got into the opponent's goal more.

If these calculations also gave the same result, they begin to calculate the behavior of the players on the field by the number of warnings and removals:

  • yellow card equals (-1) point;
  • 2 yellow cards and 1 removal - equal to (-3) points;
  • a red card takes 4 points from the team;
  • yellow in combination with red takes away 5 points from the team.

If the complex calculations of fair play and misses of opponents on the field led to the same result, FIFA has the right to play prizes using a banal lottery.

Therefore, even great and productive matches can lead to completely unexpected results. Before the start of the games in the superfinal, the situation in different groups is as follows.

Group A

Members:

  1. Russia- scored 6 points.
  2. Saudi Arabia- left with nothing - 0.
  3. Uruguay tried the most - 9 points.
  4. Egypt- just scored 3 points.

The South Americans surprised their opponents and scored the most points, winning 3 matches at once.

Slightly disappointed her fans with a resounding loss, but still managed to take second place in the team.

Group B

Members:

  1. Spain- took first place in the group, will continue to play with the Russians.
  2. Iran- could not break through the defense of the South Americans, did not reach the final.
  3. Portugal- barely slipped into the playoffs by the number of points.
  4. Morocco- Eliminated with zero points.

Iran kept the intrigue in this part of the teams for a long time. And only in the last match with the Portuguese national team did he miss his place in final tournaments championship.

Several Russian players managed to get into the main draw Open Championship Belgium in De Haan. Perhaps this number is not so high, however, our athletes in the World Tour Challenge series tournaments do not often please us with successful results, and now there is every reason to believe that the matter will not be limited to reaching the one thirty-second final. So we'll be watching more closely. For whom exactly?

First, of course, for Polina Mikhailova. Our girl initially got into the number of seeded athletes, so the St. Petersburg athlete did not participate in the preliminary stage, but saved up strength for the main stage. Her first opponent is a member of the Egyptian national team, Audrey Zarif. A strong African tennis player, but she is quite "too tough" for our Polina.

Anna Blazhko went through a more difficult path. She had to win as many as two victories - over Kristina Steftsova from the Czech Republic and Colombian Paula Medina (4-0 and 4-1 respectively) before getting into the main draw of the tournament. Next, Welsh tennis player Carey Charlotte is waiting for her - she definitely needs to go to the next stage! Another Russian in the playoffs is Olga Kulikova. She beat the Czech Aneta Kurcherova (4-1) and the strong naturalized Croatian Sun Chiayi (4-2). Now the strongest Georgina Pota will stand in her way - if she manages to pass it, then the sea will be knee-deep.

In men, initially only Kirill Skachkov got into the main draw. But, thanks to his privileged position, the Russian received a relatively passable opponent as rivals in the first round. This is the Chinese Kyu Dang, who despaired of getting at least some kind of calling at home and went under the banner of the German national team. However, there are no former Chinese, and therefore Kirill will need to take the match with the utmost seriousness.

Two more Russians made their way through the qualification. Young Lev Katsman managed to defeat the American Nicholas Tio, and then, due to the injury of the next opponent, he got into the main stage of the tournament without any problems. Well, Vildan Gadiev honestly withstood both rounds - Macedonian Andrei Putunchitsa (4-2 victory) and Indian Manav Vikash Thakkar (similar score) could not stand before him. In total, six will play in the main stage - three men and three women.

Nikita Artemenko outplayed the strong Belarusian neighbor Gleb Shamruk, but lost to the Korean at the last stage of qualification. Denis Ivonin was beaten by the Japanese Togami Shunsuke. Daria Shadrina ran into Korean Shin Yubin, while Daria Chernorai lost to Liu Ki from Hong Kong. The rest of the Russians also lost, and their representation in the main draw fell by half compared to the qualification. But now the most prepared ones are definitely in business - let's see how they manage to spend their first matches in the playoffs.

Playoffs

At the playoff stage, 12 teams join the tournament, having taken 3rd places in their Champions League groups. This rule was introduced relatively recently - on the eve of the 2011/12 season. At this stage, the teams play two matches: home and away. At this stage of the tournament important role plays the away goal rule, according to which a goal scored away is equal to one and a half goals scored at home;

The date of the Europa League final is determined in February-March and, as a rule, precedes the Champions League final. The fight is held on a neutral field, however, due to the fact that the arena is chosen before the start of the tournament itself, a situation may happen when one of the teams in the final will play on their own. home arena. If the winner is not revealed in the regulated time, extra-times follow, after which a penalty shoot-out is assigned.

Championship title and prize money

The original trophy of the tournament is kept forever by UEFA and is not transferred after changes in the rules. Clubs are given a copy of it in proportions of 4:5. The winner of the Europa League receives a ticket to the final of the European Super Cup, and also has the right to participate in the next draw of this tournament. The Europa League is a great chance for modest teams to replenish their budget. For participation in the group stage alone, the club receives 650,000 euros + 60,000 for each match played. This happened in 2016, when Sevilla fulfilled both criteria.

The group stage of the 2018 World Cup ended on June 28. Immediately after this became known full list teams that qualified for the playoffs.

Groups "A", "B", "C", "D"

The Russians are the first to reach the playoffs of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Wards of Stanislav Cherchesov took second place in their quartet. However, this did not prevent the hosts of the tournament from reaching the 1/8 finals with six points. Together with Russia, Uruguay left Group A. Latin Americans showed an absolute result in the group round - nine points and three wins in a row.

Experts predicted that Spain and Portugal would leave Group B. Experts predicted the second place in the quartet for the European champions. In this group, all forecasts were fully realized. However, Spain did not have a clear advantage - both teams scored five points each.

France and Denmark are the teams that qualified for the playoffs from Quartet C. The French scored seven points, the Danes - five. These indicators were quite enough for the teams to pass to the 1/8 finals.

Croatia is one of the few teams that reached the playoffs with an absolute score of nine points. Argentina left Group D in second place with only four points.

Groups "E", "F", "G", "H"

Brazil qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup knockout stages from first place in Group E. However, the tournament favorites scored only seven points out of nine. They were followed by Switzerland, which has five points.

Group "F" was unexpectedly led by Sweden. The Scandinavians, like the Mexicans, scored six points each. Both of these teams reached the playoffs of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, leaving behind the reigning champions - the Germans.

The third team to score nine points in the group is Belgium. The national team won the quartet "G". The second place in this group was taken by England. The Foggy Albion team scored six points, but lost to the Belgians in the fight for leadership in the quartet.

Group "H" was the most unpredictable. As a result, the teams of Colombia and Japan left the quartet. Latin Americans scored six points and became the winners of the group. The Japanese, like the Senegalese, had four points. The Asians advanced further on the best stats.
