Board riding. Water sports on the board

I can't imagine life without sports. I really like extreme views. Especially surfing. I live far from the sea waves, but surfing is in my blood, because I wakesurf on our lake. Tell me, dear editors of the women's magazine Lady's Giornale, what other types of surfing are there? Thank you in advance. (Valera Syrykh, Orenburg region)

Surfing on this moment is one of the most spectacular and popular types sports. Sliding on the waves with the help of a special board delights millions of people on all continents of the world. The art of a surfer lies in the ability to maneuver on the board among large waves or to quickly climb to the top of the wave and roll down the wave at great speed from there, and repeat this extreme path with the next wave.

At the moment, several types of boarding on the water surface have become established, which have become independent sports.

  • Classic surfing remains the most spectacular dangerous view. The main process here is that the athlete independently catches the wave, and having caught it, slides along the wave, while standing on the board.
  • Classic Hawaiian surfing differs from the previous type in that the athlete does not stand here, but lies on the board.
  • Bodysurfing is also an independent sport and it consists in the ability to glide along the wave without using the board, but using only your own body, flippers and a special glove in the form of a soft short board, which makes it possible to lean on the water.
  • Windsurfing- this is riding on a water surface on a board that is equipped with a sail attached to it. This type sports is attractive in that the pirouettes that athletes perform on their sports equipment, quite spectacular and amazing. In addition, this type of surfing has an advantage over the rest in that it is available for any wind strength.
  • kitesurfing- this is the movement of an athlete on the water due to the board and a huge kite. This is a very bright and dynamic sport, which, as a rule, gathers crowds of thousands of spectators during the competition.
  • wakesurfing- This is a type of surfing, which is very popular in those countries where there are no ocean waves. Here the desired wave is created by a boat that passes and forms waves 1 meter high, quite suitable for skiing and surfing. The whole process goes something like this: the surfer is attached to the boat with a rope, which after a while he throws and then only follows the boat, maneuvering in the waves left by the boat.

Any kind of surfing is considered one of the most extreme and dangerous. sports activities. But, despite this, millions of people seek to communicate with the water element in this way.

5 closest relatives of the surfboard,
with which you can go
on the hunt for the waves

It is generally accepted that the surfboard stood at the origins of all “board” directions, whose influence spread to city streets, ski slopes and other amazing places. not inferior in popularity to the older brother.

However, the question of who appeared earlier remains open, but this is not at all the main thing. Today we will not talk about history and the search for an alternative to classic surfing, but about the diversity of the rich and multifaceted surf culture. Each of the boards below is not at all a competitor to each other, but rather an interesting addition. And for some, the only available option is to get closer to the water element.

Skimboard

Skimboarding is the one case where even the absence of salty waves and the inability to swim will not prevent you from feeling closer to the ocean and surf culture. Yes, quite small. Yes, no fins. But do not forget why this thing exists at all. A skimboard is a “melee weapon”, for which both small coastal waves of the seas and the expanse of sandbanks, streams and even artificial pools are suitable. You don't have to line up here. The principle of operation is clear from the name (from the English skim - slippery). He threw the board in front of him, jumped up with a running start and began to slide. However, no one says that the world of big waves is not available for this board.

bodyboard

Many mistakenly believe that this contraption was created for those who have not yet fully learned how to swim or just decided to frolic in the foam. Yes, all this can be done on a short board named after human body, but this is just the tip of the iceberg. Riding on this projectile takes place reclining, but you can meet people who manage to ride on their knees and even standing. Bodyboard, padded short flippers For speed dial speed, allows its owner to make unimaginable sorties with rotations, which in their amplitude and entertainment are not inferior to classic surf.

Handplane

No, this is not a fragment of a wooden oar, and certainly not a cutting board that was accidentally thrown ashore. Handplane is a recognized anthem of surf minimalism, which even world surfers refer to from time to time. Except for the Polynesian Indians, who ancient times used similar shells from pieces of boards to play on the waves, the first modern handplanes began to appear in the 70s. Etz uses the baby in a discipline called bodysurfing. The body itself glides along the waves, and the direction is set by the outstretched hand, on which, in fact, the handplane is put on. No one considers such an activity to be a serious sport. However, such fun is attracting more and more serious surfers, who have several fancy micro-surfers with a slot for a hand hanging above the door. For example, Keith Malloy loves bodysurfing, promoting it in every possible way on his Instagram (@thetorpedopeople).

paddleboard

Today, this giant can be found in the list of activities of any holiday and festival by the water. Strictly speaking, an open body of water is the only necessary condition for riding a massive paddle surf. A wide and long board is equally stable both on the waves of surf spots of the southern oceans and in complete calm in the northern waters of the seas, rivers and lakes. As we already said once, a paddleboard is not even a means of transportation, but a whole piece of land, a personal space where you can wander along the coast, do yoga, catch waves or use it as a platform for photography.

wakesurf

“A surfer catches an “endless” wave and plans on it until he loses consciousness or the boat stops”

This type of board was born somewhere at the intersection between classic surfing and wekboarding. From the first, he received a similar board shape without small fasteners, from the second - a machine that produces waves and accelerates the rider (or just a boat). Actually, thanks to the boat, it became possible to create a wave even in closed reservoirs. The towing halyard, as a rule, is used only at the start, after which the surfer catches an “endless” wave and plans on it until he loses consciousness or the boat stops. By the way, in order to create the right wave of a size suitable for riding, photo models with champagne on board are not enough, which is why ballast is installed in special compartments on the deck - giant containers filled with water.

It does not matter who and what, it is important that it brings pleasure and gives a sense of harmony with oneself and the environment. Good waves to all, soft sand and no pressure on the lineup.

Wakeboarding for amateurs began to develop in Moscow relatively recently. The sport itself is part of the Water Skiing Federation, but only companies and shops that sell equipment and clothes for summer are interested in its development. extreme species sports. The main stations in Moscow are supported by the wetsuit and boardshort manufacturer Quiksilver and a supplier of other sports brands- Traektoria store.

Types of wake clubs

All wake clubs are divided into two types: in the first, visitors ride behind a boat, in the second, a person rides behind a winch installed on support towers. Since the towers must be on the ground, and it is rather difficult to find a shallow body of water and obtain permission for it, there are only a few such clubs in Moscow. The popular practice, for example, in Germany, of creating artificial reservoirs for sports clubs in Moscow has not yet taken root. Opening a wake club with boats is easier, but it also has its own problems. Due to the system of locks of the Moskva River, which requires permission to pass, to ather wake clubs are located either in the north of Moscow or outside the city. As a rule, boat owners want to make money on them and offer boating services. It is better to study at bases equipped with locker rooms with a large selection of equipment, and on boats that can keep the speed at one mark for a long time.

Prices

Prices for skiing behind a winch and a boat are different. Riding a boat is more expensive, but you should not be afraid of the price of 6,000 rubles per hour, since a beginner can really ride once or twice for eight minutes and then move away from physical activity. When riding behind a boat, only the time that you are in the water is counted. If you ride behind a winch, then the time that you stand in line is also considered. As a rule, beginners can not immediately get on the board. Having plopped down from the board into the water, they swim to the shore, stand in line - and so on several times until the time runs out. According to instructors, 90% of people get up on the board during their first session.

Types of boards

There are three types of boards for riding: wakeboard, wakesurf and wakeskate. On a wakeboard, which is attached to the legs, they ride behind a boat or a winch. On a wakesurfer, they ride on an endless wave that the boat creates by releasing the rope after acceleration. Wakeskate - a short board that is not attached to the legs, this is not a very popular projectile, as it is difficult to ride and do tricks on it.

Very often on the streets of the city and in the parks you can see teenagers, and sometimes adults, skateboarding. The first boards on wheels appeared in the middle of the last century and have since conquered the whole world, creating a whole subculture. Most often, they are cut through the streets, perform tricks on the ramp and in specially created skateparks. But in addition to the skateboard, there are many types of boards on wheels that are designed not only for ordinary street riding, but also for high-speed serpentine descents and even for riding on grass and sand. Let's take a closer look at these varieties.

Skateboards

A skateboard is a well-known skateboard, it is very popular with teenagers, in almost every yard you can meet a child riding it. The skateboard consists of a deck made of Canadian maple, and the deck is not solid wood, but veneered and contains from 7 to 9 layers; suspension (aluminum or titanium for more expensive models), shock absorbers, bearings and four wheels, two on each side. The skateboard necessarily has concaves (curved ends) that are used when riding and performing tricks. Tricks performed on a skateboard are very spectacular, technically complex and sometimes require good physical preparation.

Longboard

The longboard is a well-forgotten ancestor of the skateboard that is gaining popularity again. It is much longer than a skateboard, for which it was forgotten for many years, as skaters chose a shorter version for the convenience of performing tricks. In addition to being longer, this skateboard has larger diameter wheels for a smoother ride and easier handling, most longboards don't have concaves. There are several types of longboards:

  • surf-style - very long longboards, sometimes up to 3 meters long, they ride along arcuate trajectories, as they are very inertial;
  • cruising or carving longboards - the most common and bought, their length varies from 75 to 130 centimeters, they are well suited for beginners, they are easy to ride and perform simple tricks;
  • drop through - a skateboard with a small clearance, which can be adjusted to suit yourself thanks to the adjustable suspension, it is very stable at high speed, which is why it is the choice of those who like to ride with the breeze;
  • slalom - the shortest among longboards, reach a length of 70 centimeters, are very maneuverable and perfectly go around obstacles, but they have difficulty braking;
  • hybrids - a transitional species between slalom and cruise, up to 80 centimeters long, they combine maneuverability and the ability to gain high speed;
  • stunt - the only type of longboard that has a curved tail, such skateboards reach one meter in length.

Rollersurf

Rollersurf is one that is only gaining momentum in popularity. It consists of two platforms connected to each other by means of a torsion spring. The rider pushes off with one foot only at the start, later both feet are on the platforms. Rolling, moving the hips, transfers the weight of the body, first to one leg, then to the other. Rollersurf is not known for high-speed riding, but it is easy to maneuver, which is very important when riding on crowded streets. Platforms are made from both wood and plastic. It is worth saying that the rollersurfer looks very impressive from the side, because the movement takes place on only two wheels.

Speed boards

A speedboard is a skateboard. It reaches a length of 100 centimeters. The deck of such a board is very rigid and consists of 12, and sometimes 18 layers of veneer. Some premium models are made of carbon fiber. Some speedboards may have a straight deck with a concave, but riders often use heavily curved boards to ride with a trapezoidal deck, due to the lower center of gravity this variety is more stable. Speedboards are mainly used for downhill, or going downhill, on paved roads.

Streetluzh - a skateboard, also used for downhill, only, unlike the previous variety, the rider does not stand on it, but lies down or reclining when turning. Management is carried out by transferring body weight from one side to another. The board itself is made of aluminum alloy or composite materials, equipped with a head and foot cushion, foot supports and bumpers for crash protection. There can be either 4 or 8 wheels (two on each side of the side of each suspension). This is a very low board with a clearance of only 1 centimeter, so it can only be ridden on very good roads with quality asphalt.

A buttboard is a simplified form of a street luge up to 125 centimeters long. The soundboard is an ordinary wooden one with slots on the sides, for which the rider holds on. They ride like a streetluzhe, lying or reclining with their feet forward.

Skullboard is another variety used for downhill skiing. But unlike those described above, the skullboard is ridden lying on its stomach with its head forward. The board has special handles in its front part and grooves for legs in the back.

Less common varieties

A flowboard is a fairly exotic variety with 14 wheels. Her deck resembles a skateboard, but the suspension has its own characteristics. It is arched, and 7 wheels are attached to it. Flowboarding is reminiscent, when the body is tilted, the board repeats the movements of the rider, while the speed does not drop. Such a board is able to tilt up to 45°, unlike a skateboard, whose tilt angle is only 25°. But most tricks on a flowboard can't be done, and because of the bow-shaped suspension, the straight-line movement is only on two wheels, which requires more effort to maintain balance when moving in a straight line. Therefore, most raiders use it for downhill.

Snakeboard is a structure consisting of two platforms and a crossbar, movably connected to each other. Its movement is similar to that of a snake, hence the name. It is ridden either by pushing off with the leading foot, like on a skateboard, or according to the principle used when riding a rollersurf. There are no concaves on such a board, but leg bindings can be installed to perform tricks.

Freeboard has a special suspension. While the deck is no different from the deck of a skateboard, the suspension is much wider than the board itself and has 6 wheels: two are located on the central axis of the freeboard, and the remaining 4 on the sides. The movement occurs on four wheels - central and lateral. The center wheels have adjustable suspension and can be raised for stunt riding or lowered for faster riding.

Riding off asphalt

A mountainboard is a skateboard with four large wheels for off-road riding. The length of the mountainboard is more than a meter, and the wheels are located on the sides of the deck and reach a diameter of 25 centimeters. In addition, this board has special fastenings for the legs.

Loco-freeboard is another "off-road vehicle" among skateboards. His deck is wooden and without concaves, and he moves not on wheels, but on two rollers, tapering towards the ends. On a loco-freeboard, you can ride both on asphalt and on sand, grass and dirt.

Thus, at present, for the rider, there is a huge selection of various skateboards designed both for performing tricks and for high-speed skiing, on two, four and even fourteen wheels, capable of moving both on asphalt and on dirt, grass and sand. .

Surf is a convex elliptical board weighing from two to four kilograms, 30 to 100 centimeters wide and one to four meters long. The purpose of the surf is to glide over the waves, sometimes even performing various tricks.

In surfing, there are many various kinds boards that differ in parameters and shape. Longboarding is popular among beginners and even some professionals - a board more than 2 meters long, thinner and lighter than classic surf. This board is less fast and technical, but it is easier to handle and is well suited for riding on low waves.

Boards shorter than two meters are considered shortboards. By the way, racing on such boards is the main discipline in surfing as in professional sports. Shortboards are distinguished by their maneuverability, which allows surfers to perform very original exercises and tricks, which are called freestyle.

But the new “freeride” is practiced only on very short boards that easily pick up speed even when moving in a straight line. Usually the width of these boards does not exceed 83 centimeters.

Sometimes fans of water boards use the word "funboard". This was once the name given to wind-resistant surfers, but now almost all boards have this characteristic, so "funboarding" is just walking on sliding, planing boards.

The boards also differ quite seriously in terms of the surface of the coating - this also affects their characteristics.

Fiberglass boards are the cheapest and therefore the most common boards. In addition, they behave very gently on the waves, which is a significant plus. And the main disadvantage of such boards is their fragility, when flying and hitting the bottom, they can easily break.

Epoxy are groundbreaking boards that are ideal for learning. They are impact resistant, high speed, but too expensive and a little difficult to handle in rough waves.

Plastic boards are usually used for training, they are very cheap, do not break, but are not very maneuverable and do not have good characteristics at all.

In general, when choosing the material from which the board is made, it is worth proceeding from their budget. If he allows, then you definitely need to take epoxy. Due to lack of experience, beginners often beat their boards, so epoxy will last much longer. It is also convenient for those who travel to the ocean. If you live right next to a skiing area or are on a budget, you can also take a fiberglass board.

Also, the boards differ in the amount of resin. The more resins, the heavier and stronger the board, and the smaller, the lighter and more fragile, respectively. Pros tend to use boards with a minimum amount of resin - these boards are easy to perform tricks on, but they constantly break. If you are not a professional, then it is better to buy a simple mass-produced board with a normal amount of resin - this way it will live much longer, and the heaviness will even allow you to better get used to riding the waves.

Equally important is the quality of the resin. In almost every coastal country there are craftsmen who can make you a board for half the price of a store, but the poor quality of the material will play a cruel joke - such a board will quickly soften and turn yellow, so it will be impossible to ride it. But the boards of well-known brands, despite the high price, often live much longer.
