D.C. United advanced to the MLS playoffs. Last matches of the Champions League play-off round: who will advance to the group stage? Who didn't make it to the playoffs

The second round of competition at the 2018 FIFA World Cup has ended. Now it has become known how many teams leave the group and fight for victory in the finals. Thus, out of 32 teams that applied to participate in international competitions, only 16 reached the 1/8.

This means that the decisive tournaments will be decisive in choosing the winner. The successful start of the matches ensured Russia, as the host, the right to continue the tournament.

How the best teams were selected

All teams were divided into 8 groups, each named according to the first letters of the English alphabet. 4 teams played under the corresponding letter. From the entire group, only those teams that scored the most points were admitted to the final competition.

If main criterion turned out to be equivalent - we looked at the number of goals scored or missed. When, according to calculations, the teams are in equal positions, preference is given to the country whose team hit the opponent’s goal more.

If these calculations gave the same result, they begin to calculate the behavior of the players on the field based on the number of warnings and deletions:

  • a yellow card is equal to (-1) point;
  • 2 yellow cards and 1 deletion - equal to (-3) points;
  • a red card takes away 4 points from a team;
  • yellow in combination with red takes away 5 points from the team.

If complex calculations of fair play and opponents’ mistakes on the field lead to the same result, FIFA has the right to award prizes using a banal lottery.

Therefore, even great and productive matches can lead to completely unexpected results. Before the start of the games in the super final, the situation is different groups the situation is as follows.

Group A

Participants:

  1. Russia- scored 6 points.
  2. Saudi Arabia- left with nothing - 0.

Several at once Russian players managed to reach the main draw Open Championship Belgium in De Haan. Perhaps this number is not so large, but our athletes in the Challenge series of the World Tour do not often please us with successful results, and now there is every reason to assume that it will not be limited to reaching one thirty-second final. So we'll be watching more closely. For whom exactly?

Firstly, of course, for Polina Mikhailova. Our girl was initially among the seeded athletes, so the St. Petersburg athlete did not take part in the preliminary stage, but saved up her strength for the main stage. Her first opponent is a member of the Egyptian national team, Audrey Zarif. She is a strong African tennis player, but she is quite tough for our Polina.

Anna Blazhko went through a more difficult path. She had to win as many as two victories - over Kristina Stefcova from the Czech Republic and Colombian Paula Medina (4-0 and 4-1, respectively) before getting into the main draw of the tournament. Next up is Welsh tennis player Carey Charlotte - she definitely needs to advance to the next stage! Another Russian woman in the playoffs is Olga Kulikova. She beat Czech Aneta Kurcherova (4-1) and strong naturalized Croatian Sun Jiayi (4-2). Now the strongest Georgina Pota will stand in her way - if she manages to get past her, then the sea will be knee-deep.

For men, initially only Kirill Skachkov made it into the main draw. But, thanks to his privileged position, the Russian received a relatively passable opponent as an opponent in the first round. This is the Chinese Qiu Dang, who despaired of getting at least some kind of calling in his homeland and went under the banner of the German national team. However, there are no former Chinese, and therefore Kirill will need to take the match with the utmost seriousness.

Two more Russians made it through qualification. Young Lev Katzman managed to defeat the American Nicholas Tio, and then, due to the injury of his next opponent, he easily entered the main stage of the tournament. Well, Vildan Gadiev honestly withstood both rounds - the Macedonian Andrei Putunchitsa (4-2 win) and the Indian Manav Vikash Thakkar (a similar score) did not survive in front of him. In total, six will play in the main stage - three men and three women.

Nikita Artemenko beat his strong Belarusian neighbor Gleb Shamruk, but lost to the Korean at the last stage of qualifying. Denis Ivonin was beaten by the Japanese Togami Shunsuke. Daria Shadrina lost to Korean Shin Yubin, and Daria Chernorai lost to Liu Ki from Hong Kong. The rest of the Russians also lost, and their representation in the main draw decreased by half compared to the qualifications. But now the most prepared ones are definitely left in the action - let's see how they manage to play their first matches in the playoffs.

Official name: UEFA Europa League

Number of participants: 186 qualifying teams, 48 group stage teams, 32 playoff participants

Basic provisions

The Europa League tournament is a direct successor to the UEFA Cup, retaining most of the rules of the famous “Old World” tournament. The competition includes three stages:

  • Qualification
  • Group stage
  • Playoffs

Thanks to the new qualifying format adopted in 2011, the Europa League tournament lasts almost the entire calendar year, from July to May.

Qualifying round

In mid-July the first matches of the 1st qualifying round. The 50 second-placed teams in countries with odds from 35 to 53, the third-placed teams in championships from 22 to 41st place and the 3 fair play winners compete against each other in a two-legged clash.

In the next round, the 25 winners are joined by another 55 clubs: the winners of cup tournaments in championships with a rating from 30 to 53, the fifth teams of countries from 7th to 9th place, the bronze medalists of countries from 16th to 21st place and the winners fourth places in countries from 10th to 15th.

The 40 strongest teams make their way to the third round, joined by 30 clubs, among which are the sixth teams from the top three UEFA championships. Also at this stage, bronze medalists of championships with ratings from 7 to 9 and winners of cup tournaments of countries with ratings from 1 to 17 play their matches.

The last, fourth qualifying round, includes the 35 strongest teams from the previous stage, as well as an additional 41 teams, 15 of which are losers from the 3rd qualifying round of the Champions League. In addition, the fifth teams of the top three UEFA rankings, the fourth-place holders in countries with odds from 4th to 6th and the bronze medalists of countries with a rating from 7th to 9th take part in this round.

Group stage

Automatically in group stage 17 clubs will be included from the list of participants based on the UEFA club rankings at the end of the 2017/18 season.

  • The two strongest teams each from the five highest-ranked associations: Spain, Germany, England, Italy, France (10)
  • One team each from associations occupying places from 6th to 12th in the ranking: Russia, Portugal, Ukraine, Belgium, Turkey, Czech Republic, Switzerland (7)
  • Ten teams will reach the group stage after being eliminated from the Champions League - these are the six losers of the League Representative Path (losers of the third qualifying round and play-off round) and the four teams that will leave the Champions League after the play-off round in the Champions Path bracket.

Qualification

From the 2018/19 season, teams will compete in two different brackets: Champions Path and Main Path. The qualifying round will include teams from the list of participants based on the UEFA club rankings at the end of the 2016/17 season.

Champions Path (8 group stage berths)

The teams that will be eliminated from the Champions League between the preliminary round and the third qualifying round of the Champions Path will play here. In total, three qualifying rounds will be played:

  • Second qualifying round: 20 teams eliminated from the Champions League after the preliminary round and first qualifying round
  • Third qualifying round: 10 teams eliminated from the Champions League after the second qualifying round plus 10 winners of the second qualifying round of the Europa League Champions Path
  • Play-off round: six teams eliminated from the Champions League after the third qualifying round plus 10 winners from the third qualifying round of the Europa League Champions Path

Main path (13 group stage berths)

The remaining Europa League participants from all 55 national associations will play here, plus the teams that leave the Champions League after defeat at the second qualifying round stage in the League Path bracket.

  • Preliminary round: 16 teams
  • First qualifying round: 86 teams plus eight preliminary round winners
  • Second qualifying round: 27 teams plus 47 winners from the first qualifying round
  • Third qualifying round: 15 teams (including the three clubs that exited the Champions League after losing at the second qualifying round stage in the League Path bracket) plus 37 second qualifying round winners
  • Play-off round: 26 third qualifying round winners

Playoffs

At the playoff stage, 12 teams that took 3rd place in their Champions League groups join the tournament. This rule was introduced relatively recently - on the eve of the 2011/12 season. At this stage, teams play two matches: home and away. At this stage of the tournament important role the away goal rule is played, according to which a goal scored on the road is equal to one and a half goals scored at home;

The date of the Europa League final is determined in February-March and, as a rule, precedes the Champions League final. The match is held on a neutral field, however, due to the fact that the arena is chosen before the start of the tournament itself, a situation may arise when one of the teams in the final plays on their own home arena. If the winner is not identified in the regulated time, extra times follow, after which a penalty shootout is awarded.

Champion title and prize money

The original tournament trophy is kept forever by UEFA and will not be transferred after changes to the rules. Clubs are given a copy of it in proportions 4:5. The winner of the Europa League receives a ticket to the final of the European Super Cup and also has the right to participate in the next edition of this tournament. The Europa League is a great chance for modest teams to supplement their budget. For participation in the group stage alone, the club receives 650,000 euros + 60,000 for each match played. A win in the group stage is valued at 140,000 euros, and a draw at 70,000. At the qualifying stage, the team receives 90,000 euros regardless of the result.

In the playoffs, earnings increase significantly: 180,000 thousand in the 1/16 finals, 270,000 in the 1/8, 360,000 thousand for participation in the 1/4, 630,000 thousand for the semi-finals and finally, 2 million euros for participation in final. The winner will receive 3 million euros, as well as various bonuses from sponsors.

Trophy

The Europa League trophy is a silver cup awarded to the winner of the Europa League. This trophy is the heaviest UEFA club trophy (15 kg). The height of the cup is 65 cm, width - 33 cm, depth -23 cm.

A silver trophy on a yellow marble pedestal, which was created by the Italian masters Bertoni. The trophy has no handles.

According to the tournament rules, the cup is given to the winner for one year. The victor will receive only a copy of the cup for permanent possession. According to the regulations, the original can only be received by a club that has won the tournament three times in a row, or five times in total. This happened in 2016, when Sevilla fulfilled both criteria.

The group stage of the 2018 World Cup ended on June 28. Immediately after this it became known full list teams that made it to the playoffs.

Groups “A”, “B”, “C”, “D”

The Russians are the first to reach the playoffs of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Stanislav Cherchesov's team took second place in their quartet. However, this did not prevent the hosts of the tournament from reaching the 1/8 finals, gaining six points. Together with Russia, Uruguay left Group A. The Latin Americans showed an absolute result in the group round - nine points and three victories in a row.

Experts predicted that Spain and Portugal would leave Group B. Experts predicted second place in the quartet for the European champions. In this group, all predictions were fully realized. However, Spain did not have a clear advantage - both teams scored five points.

France and Denmark are the teams that qualified for the playoffs from Quartet C. The French scored seven points, the Danes five. These indicators were enough for the teams to advance to the 1/8 finals.

Croatia is one of the few teams that reached the playoffs with an absolute score of nine points. Argentina left Group D in second place with only four points.

Groups “E”, “F”, “G”, “H”

Brazil qualified for the 2018 FIFA World Cup playoffs from first place in Group E. However, the tournament favorites scored only seven points out of nine. They were followed by Switzerland with five points.

Group F was unexpectedly topped by Sweden. The Scandinavians, like the Mexicans, scored six points each. Both of these teams reached the playoffs of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, leaving the current champions, the Germans, behind.

The third team with nine points in the group is Belgium. The team won Quartet “G”. England took second place in this group. The Foggy Albion team scored six points, but lost the fight for leadership in the quartet to the Belgians.

Group "N" was the most unpredictable. As a result, the teams of Colombia and Japan left the quartet. The Latin Americans scored six points and became group winners. The Japanese, like the Senegalese, had four points. Asians advanced further in terms of better statistical indicators.
