The 83rd Ice Hockey World Championship 2019 kicks off very soon, where fans can watch their favorite teams battle for the title best country. The last competitions of the strongest teams have become unpredictable, and that's all, because in each team the level of play is almost the same. As a result, the final ending of the confrontations is unrealistic to predict, and the audience gets a large number of exciting fights on ice.

Ice Hockey World Championship 2019: where will it take place

The Ice Hockey World Championship 2019 will be held from 3 to 19 May in Slovakia in the cities of Kasice and Bratislava. Initially, beautiful Switzerland was the main contender for the event, but for some reason the officials withdrew the official application at the last moment. However, they have decided to hold the Ice Hockey World Championship in 2020. As a result, Slovakia was chosen thanks to a non-alternative system.

So, the games of the 2019 Ice Hockey World Championship will be held at the following stadiums:

  • Slovnaft Arena with a capacity of 10,060 people;
  • Steel Arena with a capacity of 8,050 people.

The final match and fights for bronze places will be played at the Slovnaft Arena. The stadium is equipped with the best infrastructure that can accommodate more than 10 thousand people and hold large-scale hockey games. We encourage all fans to come and support the pets.

Participants of the Ice Hockey World Cup 2019

Only the Slovakian national ice hockey team qualified for the tournament. The final list of squads that will continue to fight for the trophy will be found out at the championship in 2018. We can already safely assume that due to the high level of play, the following teams will get into the tournament:

  • Russia;
  • Finland;
  • Canada;
  • Czech Republic;
  • Sweden;
  • Switzerland;
  • Canada.

Other hockey teams most likely they will not get such a chance to play in a grand tournament. The rest of the squads better take care of their current position and not fall into a lower division. It is better to bypass the last line in the table so as not to fall into weak teams.

Ice Hockey World Cup 2019 Regulations

The format of the tournament, which will be played in two cities in Slovakia, will not receive drastic changes. As usual, 16 countries will be divided into two subgroups, where each team will play one match with the opponent. The first four countries enter the 1/4 stage (playoffs). All squad games will be played crosswise. This means that the first team from subgroup "A" needs to meet with squad number 4 from subgroup "B".

Interestingly, in knockout games, a ten-minute overtime is allowed. Why we noted this, but because the group stage provides for a 5-minute. If in final game the teams played a draw, then they need to play a 20-minute match or overtime.

It is noteworthy that Switzerland automatically remains even if it takes eighth place in standings. And all because of the fact that the 2020 Ice Hockey World Championship will be held in Switzerland. If the Swiss still take eighth place, then the seventh team from the subgroup will go to the lower league.

Now the question is where the championship will take place World Hockey Championship 2019 is completely exhausted. Only now there is one nuance for the audience, and which participants will get to the championship. Very soon, the first official statements, schedules of matches of the tournament will appear.

Ice Hockey World Cup 2019: strong Russian team - strengthened rivals

The 2019 World Cup in Slovakia will begin on May 10 - this is the latest start in the last ten years. Usually even May 5-6 was considered a belated start.

- The late start of the World Cup will allow our team to better prepare for the tournament , - says the president of the Russian Ice Hockey Federation (FHR), Vladislav Tretyak. - Players will have time to recover from the KHL playoffs. From the NHL, where in the new season there will be about forty of our players, many guys will have time to free themselves.

Actually, this is the key difference between the upcoming World Cup and the previous ones. If earlier, by the time the playoffs started at the NHL World Championship, the second round of the Stanley Cup was ending and not everyone had the sense to rush to the national team, now two rounds in the overseas playoffs will finish by the time the 2019 World Cup starts. And during the tournament, hockey players whose NHL teams were eliminated in the semifinals of the Stanley Cup will have time to join him. So only the finalists of the overseas playoffs will remain behind the World Cup.

A similar alignment promises fans a scattering of hockey stars. Ilya Vorobyov can get at his disposal one of the best rebounds of hockey players in his career with Evgeni Malkin, Artemy Panarin, Alexander Ovechkin, Nikita Kucherov, Sergey Bobrovsky, etc. However, competitors will also become stronger, so for the first time in many years the level of the tournament will correspond to the name "world championship".

Moreover, it can become the main tournament of the national teams, since the Olympic future of hockey is in doubt. IIHF President Rene Fasel said that the NHL may once again not let its players go to the Olympics, as it was in Pyeongchang. Moreover, according to Fasel, tougher scenarios are not ruled out: the Beijing 2022 hockey tournament can become a youth tournament (under 23, as in football) or hockey in Olympic China won't be at all.

- This is, of course, the last option. Fasel explains. - First of all, we expect to find common ground with the NHL and hope to fill the hockey tournament in Beijing with the strongest players in the world - to make it the same as in the period from 1998 to 2014.

Against the backdrop of this uncertainty, the world championships will become the most significant in terms of international level. hockey tournaments. The Russian national team will open the nearest of them on May 10 with a game against the Norwegian team, and this meeting, by the way, will be the first for Ilya Vorobyov at the World Cup as a full-fledged head coach of the Russian national team.

It is curious that most of the rivals of the Russians in the group stage of the 2019 World Cup are the same as a year ago: the Austrians with the Czechs in the first half, the Swiss and the Swedes at the finish line. The national teams of Latvia, Italy and Norway made a variety, replacing Slovakia, France and Belarus in the list of opponents.

But Vorobyov's squad is unlikely to collide with the outlandish UK team. The representatives of the United Kingdom, who will return to the elite of world hockey after 25 years, were sent by the IIHF to group A. And there Canada, the USA, Finland and experienced Slovakia and Germany. In such a company, a 1/4 exit is unlikely for the British.

Oddly enough, Group A with the hosts of the tournament will not be based in the capital of Slovakia, but five hundred kilometers from it - the city of Kosice at the Steel Arena, which can accommodate 8340 spectators. While the Russians and other groups of group B are waiting for Bratislava and its 10,000th Ondrej Nepela Arena.

In the larger Vancouver, the youth team of Russia will also play, which got to the MFM-2019, which will be held in Canada, in group A. The maple leaf country hosts the MFM for the sixth time in the last ten years. The Russians will open the tournament on December 27 with a meeting with the Danes, on December 29 the Czechs are waiting for them, on the eve of the New Year, on December 31, the Swiss, and on New Year they will enter into a superbattle with the hosts of the tournament, Canada, which will start at 01.00 Moscow time.

The teams that will take the first four lines in the standings will receive the right to participate in the playoff games (1/4 finals).

It is worth paying attention to the fact that in the knockout matches there is a 10-minute overtime, which will determine the winner in the event of a draw in the regular time of the match. To determine the strongest in the final confrontation, the teams are given a 20-minute overtime. If a draw was also recorded in extra time, the winner of the tournament is determined by a series of shootouts.

Bookmaker Predictions

According to sports analysts, the traditional favorites of the hockey championships have the highest chances of winning the 2019 world title. This list includes teams from Russia, Canada, the Czech Republic, the USA and Sweden. Pretty good chances of reaching the 1/4 finals of the World Cup have the national teams of Germany and Switzerland, which have demonstrated simply brilliant results in the previous three tournaments.

Separately, it is worth mentioning the team from Sweden, which are the current owners of the trophy. At the 2018 championship, which took place in Denmark, the wards of Rikard Grenborg proved to be a strong and formidable opponent. At the stage of group games, the Scandinavians did not suffer a single defeat from competitors. In the 1/4 finals, Latvia was defeated, and in semifinal match"yellow-blue" won confident victory over the Americans, defeating them with a score of 6:0. The final match turned out to be the most difficult test for the Swedes in the tournament, however, here they did not disappoint their fans, beating the Swiss in a series of post-match shootouts (3:2).

As for the Russian national team, the 82nd season of the World Cup for our hockey players was not very successful. Despite the fact that the “red car” held group fights on its usual the highest level, in the quarterfinals, the domestic team failed to overcome the resistance of the Canadians. As a result, the first match of the playoff stage was lost with a score of 4:5.

For millions of Russian fans, the departure of the national team at an early stage of the championship was real tragedy, however, they do not stop believing in the success of their heroes at the tournament in Slovakia.
