Theoretically, knowing the cross-sectional area of ​​each thread in the cord, it is possible to determine the overall diameter of the cord, but the problem is that the diameter of each thread differs significantly from each other and is different along the entire length. And moreover: who said that the number of micro-threads is generally known and that it is a constant value? So, this measurement method is also very inaccurate.

So how do you measure the diameter of a braided fishing line?

We can use a little trick: if we tie a regular single knot on a braided fishing line and tighten it, its density will allow us to use a micrometer and find out the size of the knot. If you tie several knots on one fishing line, their size will differ from each other within the limits of error. Thus, we can take the thickness of the knot as the conditional size of the thickness of the braided line.

If we divide the thickness of the knot by two, we get the diameter of the braided thread close to the real one.

2.1. Palomar knot with a milking loop (i.e. the double wattle was threaded into the loop twice, after which the knot was knitted and fixed): 4.90 kg. (in fact, the result is within the margin of error and makes a lot of sense; I don’t see how to knit a double loop specifically for this “wattle”)

* I checked again at the Palomar node, the presence of an improvised “leash” made from a paper clip (I was too lazy to go get the leash, let’s assume that it’s not a leash, but a swivel, let’s say, its diameter is exactly the same as that of a paper clip)) to which a fishing line is attached, on the results had no effect. As soon as there is a road to the pier, I’ll check it again, this time with a real leash.

** At the Palomar unit, an experiment was carried out with a piece of “wattle fence” of greater length, a piece of 1.8 m was taken and immediately before taking measurements (i.e. already on the “rack”) it was moistened with water using a sponge, the distance between the axis was which the fishing line was wound with a “leash” placed on the steelyard - about 1.2 m, after the measurement, the piece of fishing line was unrolled and a second measurement was taken, the third was carried out on a new piece. The result obtained in three dimensions: 4.88; 4.92; 4.48 kg. Believe it or not)) Thus, for myself at least, I have decided that there is no need to wet the entire segment before taking measurements, as well as to take measurements on a line of greater length (a meter or more).

2. Palomar node: I was pleased (!) with 8.35 kg. I checked Palomar with a double loop 2 times (not three), the result is very close, after testing on two fishing lines, I don’t even know if it makes sense to check it in the future...

3. "Blind" loop: 7.0 kg.

On the advice of SEIB, after the knot was tightened, I trimmed the free end of the “wattle” leaving about 5 mm. after which, I burned it with a lighter, and at the end it turned out to be a kind of “bump.” So, about 5 kg. - the knot begins to slip, after which it rests on the resulting “bump” and holds an average of up to 9.05 kg. (!) Almost like a “knotless” pattern - an excellent result!

I didn’t use a lighter to burn it, the knot tries to slip just a little, also about 5 kg. (rather, it just drags on until the end), the gap is on average 8.35 kg.

Brief IMHO: the fishing line looks much more cheerful against the background of Cormoran Corastrong PE 8-Braid, the point is not in greater strength (this is understandable, it is stated to be much greater), but in the fact that the spread of the load that the fishing line can withstand does not depend so much on the type of knot .

Actual tensile strength in % of the declared one (13 kg), for each of the tested units:

1. "Knotless" installation - 70%

2. Palomar knot - 64%
3. "Blind" loop - 54%
4. Knot “Reinforced Clinch” (6 turns with the free end of the fishing line melted) - 70%
5. Double Clinch knot (6 turns) - 64%

PS I’ll leave a piece of Cormoran Corastrong PE 8-Braid, I’ll try it in the dead of winter, I have a suspicion that I was in a hurry the first time... I loaded this line, with a load close to the maximum, much more slowly... maybe the results will change a little...

Besides This is the first relatively thin fishing line that fell into my hands...

I never completed the microscope for the child, the attempt to take a photo was a fiasco (the poor quality of the plastic lens is to blame for this, nevertheless, experiments continue), but judging by what I saw, the weave is very dense, and the diameter is quite uniform...

I described the test methodology above and also demonstrated the video, so let’s go straight to the results:

1. “Knotless” installation: 3.55 (!) kg.

2. Palomar node: - slips (two attempts)

2.1. Palomar knot with double loop - 3.00 kg.

3. "Blind" loop: 1.75 kg.
(with cauterized free end). About 0.7 kg. - the knot begins to slip, after which it rests on the resulting “bump” and holds an average of up to 2.6 kg.

I didn’t use a lighter to burn it, the knot hardly tries to slip, but the gap on average is only 1.95 kg. (?) I don’t understand what is causing this failure...

Brief IMHO: As great as the result is on a “knotless” installation, it is just as disastrous on the “Clinch” and especially on the “double Clinch”... There is an opinion that this line is quite delicate, sensitive to injury and not very wear-resistant... as far as this is concerned True, I don’t presume to judge, but if this is so, perhaps this is precisely what explains such a result on “complex” nodes that have many kinks... I don’t pretend to be true.))

I really wanted to compare the two “Proshkas” that fell into my hands... but this “rope” gave me no rest... Cajun Line Cajun Braid from CAJUN GUARD... 300 YD(275 m.) on a reel, 0.279 mm. And 30lb or 13.6 kg. (!) declared tensile load! I understand that fishing line is rare in our area... but I couldn’t resist checking it first...)

Unfortunately, you can’t buy this fishing line here, but if you really want, you can order it from the bourgeoisie, if I’m not mistaken, its price is about $31... I didn’t find any special laudatory odes from the manufacturer... for some reason the main emphasis is on for its gorgeous color (well, of course) and the fact that it does not fade, does not fade, in general, it looks great until old age....

To the touch the line is quite rigid with excellent “memory”, round, the weaving is felt clearly, I think it will be quite noisy when casting... Very powerful))) it looks really convincing...

Now the reason why the test is delayed a little... Knotless, rack, turnover, two, three... 4 kg, 5.. 6.. .. .. 12... 13... 14 (!).. . 15 (?)... 16... (!!!) - 16,3 ! BAM!!! Break!

The homemade clasp made from a paper clip has lost its former shape... Involuntarily, I remembered Andrey’s doubts - “..will the rack hold up?..”))) It did... but the clasp will have to be remade... 16.3 (!) guys.. .at the stated 13.6! I love America!)))

So, the results:

1. “Knotless” installation: - 15.2 (!) kg. Repeat yesterday's record of 16.3 kg. It didn’t work out (the minimum value out of 5 attempts was 14.2), however, the average result is impressive.

2. Palomar node: - 14.2 (!) kg. Again more than stated! (what is it written on American currency?)

3. “Blind” loop: slips, with a cauterized free end, holds 12.6 kg.

4. Clinch reinforced knot (6 turns): 14.05 kg. (I didn’t burn anything with a lighter and it holds up just fine)

5. Double Clinch knot (6 turns): 10.9 kg . (extremely unstable result, spread across 5 measurements is 2.4 (!) kg.)

Brief IMHO: Super result on “knotless” editing, Palomar and Clinch... Failure (well, like a failure, more than good result compared to previous test subjects) in the double Clinch, in my opinion, is due to the complexity of the knot, there are too many turns and bends, the knot is tightened during the testing process (it was not possible to tighten it completely by hand more than once), apparently it “burns” during the slipping process. In general, this “rope” does not need such a complex knot.)

From myself: the “cord” is quite rigid (in comparison with Cormoran or Unitika), round, quite slippery (although the “weaving” is felt).

The test of this fishing line has unfortunately been postponed for an indefinite time... The fact is that I wound the entire piece onto the axle, deciding that I would gradually unwind it, cutting off 20 at a time, and knit a new knot... The first was the “knotless”: first attempt: 3.75 kg. - break near the fastener, second attempt: 4.15 and the fishing line breaks near the axis on which it is wound, while crashing into the winding so that it is impossible to pull it out from there... i.e. I couldn’t even find the end... I’ll have to stupidly cut it off with a knife... Things like that. It’s not clear what caused the breakage not at the fastener, it’s the first time this happened... Just in case, I will no longer reel in the whole line at once, but cut it into pieces, as I did before...

I’m not even trying to argue with this, because I absolutely agree, I’ll repeat it again (it’s probably worth making some kind of preface so that those reading the thread don’t have the desire to explain to me every time that my results are not entirely correct))):

1. I know that the test that I conduct has a lot of shortcomings and its results do not correspond to laboratory tests, which is why I do not claim the truth. However, when conducting tests, I try to follow a number of rules that, in my opinion, allow (as far as possible at home) to get the most accurate and stable results possible, namely: I try to knit the knots the same way (I don’t try that when fishing)) , I try to increase the load on the fishing line evenly, simultaneously controlling the speed of rotation of the handle and the increase in values ​​on the steelyard (here is, of course, the weakest point, because it is extremely difficult to do this), each time I take a new piece of “wattle fence”, of course, twisting of the fishing line is excluded (unlike “ bottle test, blown to smithereens in this article)).

2. The main task that I set for myself was to determine how much the data on the breaking load declared by the manufacturer differed in % from the results I received for different fishing lines and knots. Since the test conditions are the same for all fishing lines, I am inclined to think that the ratio will remain unchanged, even when testing under conditions close to laboratory ones, the threshold value will simply shift closer to that declared by the manufacturer.

3. At a certain stage, a table will be compiled in which the received data will be entered: Brand/model of fishing line and the breaking load declared by the manufacturer and the value obtained for each of the tested nodes. The results obtained will allow us to draw several conclusions: which fishing line is not worth buying at all)), and which of the knots is better to use on this or that fishing line (and which one should not be used at all... I, for example, noticed that a significant number of novice fishermen really like " blind" loop... it’s easy to knit, I’ve used it myself, those who have been fishing for a long time don’t use it almost at all, but here’s why - it’s clear from the tests that it’s almost always the saddest result).
