Why do you need a swimming cap? Swimming cap

For many of us, swimming is not only an enjoyable pastime, a sport, but also a way to lose weight, as well as an opportunity to constantly get our body in shape. But how can you look beautiful at the same time?

Today, there are various devices that help many people avoid unpleasant moments when swimming. A necessary and significant attribute is a swimming cap. Let's try to figure out how to choose the best waterproof cap for the pool.

Very often you can find discussions about pool caps, where many girls are unhappy with the appearance. This can happen by various reasons: someone can’t cope with bangs, someone’s face shape changes, and someone is simply unhappy with their hair gathered in a bun. How to choose a hat that will not only allow you to not violate the rules for using the pool, but also make your look cute.

  1. A woman's hat is sometimes not tight-fitting. You can choose a style that can fit in one part of the head and be loose in the other. This allows you to visually change the proportions of the head.
  2. When you want to visually stand out or attract attention with a hat with a relief or pattern. This will change the proportions of the face.
  3. A textile hat helps to decorate the image and make it more original.
  4. When you want to stand out from the crowd, today there are various ways that differ from ordinary hats by the presence of decorations. Here you can find beads, flowers, embroidery and much more. But it is worth remembering that this will not have a positive effect on the quality of swimming.

Is it possible to swim without a cap?

Which accessory to choose is up to each person to decide. But this attribute is considered the most important in many pools. Why is this so?

  1. You don't pollute the pool with your hair. It is worth remembering that every day a person loses up to 100 pieces of hair, which in the pool can clog the duct, and thereby impair its functioning.
  2. Water cannot get into the ears, which eliminates the formation of otitis media. Very often you can find half-open options that allow the ears to be outside the accessory. To do this, it is best to purchase earplugs and continue to enjoy the process of swimming.
  3. Scientists have proven that long or medium hair, when wet, leads to hypothermia.
  4. The speed of a person who comes to the pool will decrease without a cap. Thanks to the streamlined shape and smooth coating, the effect of faster gliding in the water is achieved.
  5. Saves time on drying hair. After all, for a modern person today, everything is planned down to the minute. There is absolutely no time for additional procedures. However, it is worth remembering that not all materials guarantee waterproofness to the cap.

Materials for making waterproof swimming caps

Among the main materials that can be distinguished at the moment are rubber, latex and silicone.

Rubber cap. Rubber hats have been used all over the world for 60 years. For long hair, this option is best suited because the hair will not get wet in all cases. But, it is worth remembering that before use it is better to apply talc or powder so that the hair can then stick well from the accessory. This item should be dried on a windowsill or on a regular table surface. No need to resort to drying on radiators or under the sun.

Latex cap. It has a number of differences from the previous version:

  1. Latex products have a shorter service life. They last for a much smaller number of wearings compared to rubber ones.
  2. The cost reaches 300 rubles from leading manufacturers. If you decide to purchase a cheaper option, then it will cost you a maximum of 100 rubles.
  3. This option is best suited for short hair, because otherwise it will be difficult to put on.

Silicone cap. One of the leaders today is the silicone cap. It is very often called professional, due to the fact that many leading manufacturers today are developing only this option. And this is justified by a number of advantages:

  1. It can be quickly put on;
  2. Good strength;
  3. Can be quickly removed;
  4. No need to use additional devices for convenient operation;
  5. There is no allergic reaction;
  6. The edges are denser than the rest;
  7. Good elasticity, thanks to which the hat can stretch almost 2 times. This option is often called a voluminous cap.

Do not forget about the textile option, which is characterized by a number of disadvantages. The most important thing is that the hair will get wet after the first swim, and the accessory will take longer to dry than all similar analogues.

How to choose the ideal option?

Today there are quite a lot of options that sometimes confuse buyers. In this case, it is worth describing a little the ideal model, as well as certain selection criteria:

  1. The hat should be comfortable. It must keep your hair dry, not stick to your head, quickly put on, and also quickly take off.
  2. You should immediately pay attention to how much the accessory costs. If you play sports professionally, you can pay more than if you buy a cap for free swimming or for a child.
  3. Choosing between external design, abundance of decorations and a smooth shape, if your goal is a high-quality swim, preference should still be given to the classic form-fitting shape.

How to put on a hat correctly?

If you have already selected an accessory, then you are only halfway there. There are always great difficulties with how to put it on. What should be done for this?

  1. If you are a long-haired visitor, your hair should be tied in a bun at the back of your head. The bangs are combed back because once you put them on you won't be able to push them under the cap. It is best to do this process at home.
  2. If you have purchased a rubber cap, you should take care to sprinkle it with talcum powder or another special product.
  3. The palms are folded into a boat shape and placed into the cap, which will allow it to stretch inside. In the same condition it is put on the head.
  4. First, the accessory is put on the forehead, ears, and then on the back of the head. The ears should be covered and the hairline should remain behind.
  5. The garment should be removed carefully. In this case, you need to pass your fingers under the accessory at the back of the head, and then carefully remove it from the forehead.
  6. After use, the product is washed and dried under natural conditions.

What types of swimming caps are there?

Swimming caps are made from different materials:

For professional athletes participating in competitions, special high-tech models of sports swimming caps have been developed; their hydrodynamic properties come first in these caps. Professional speed swimming cap follows the anatomical contours of the head, does not form folds and can have different thicknesses in different areas of the head. Such a silicone cap can cost much more than a regular one and can improve the time you complete the distance.

Professional swim caps (from left to right): Speedo Aqua V-Cap, Speedo Plain Molded Silicone Cap, Arena Team Line Molded Cap, Speedo Fastskin3 Cap

Progressive manufacturers of swimming equipment have also taken care of ladies with long hair. Special models have been created for them caps for long hair.

Speedo went further by taking care of professional long-haired athletes, and created the Fastskin3 Hair Management System - a special device worn under the professional silicone cap Speedo Fastskin3 Cap. Hair Management System - an “inner cap” of fabric helps organize hair to improve hydrodynamics.

Emphasize your individuality Not only bright colors or an unusual pattern of a silicone cap will help. You can still find swimming caps with a textured surface (for example, with three-dimensional flowers). There are even retro beanies with a chin strap. A funny slogan is suitable for a young athlete. For children, they produce bright hats with their favorite cartoon characters and in the form of animals.

Swim cap size

Swimming caps are divided into sizes only for adults and children. More recently, some swimming equipment manufacturers have begun to produce medium-sized caps that are suitable for teenagers and adults with small heads. Women's and men's swimming caps also do not differ in size.

How to wear a swimming cap correctly

For many children and even some adults, putting on swimming cap turns into a separate torment. However, it is difficult to wear only a latex cap. Putting on a regular silicone cap is not at all difficult, the main thing is not to try to pull the cap on by holding it by one edge.

Here brief instructions on how to properly put on a swimming cap:

  1. If your hair is very dry and clean, and very electrified, you can lightly moisten it with water before putting on the pool cap.
  2. Collect long hair in a flat bun just above the back of the head. It is better to use elastic bands, as a sharp-edged hairpin or hairpin can damage the hat. Lower your head slightly before putting on the cap.
  3. Place two palms into the cap (as if putting a cap on your palms) and stretch it.
  4. Putting your head between your palms, pull the cap over your head and lower your palms over your temples.
  5. Slide your palms down, covering your ears with the cap. Remove your palms.
  6. Spread the hat with your palms from the top of your head in all directions: pull it over your forehead, back of your head and temples.
  7. Holding and slightly protruding the edge of the cap with the fingers of one hand, tuck the fallen strands and bangs under the cap with the fingers of the other hand
  8. With a light massage movement, “smooth” the cap for one or two seconds so that the cap fits as comfortably as possible and does not pull anywhere
After class, it will be easier to remove the cap by sticking your palms under it. Don't forget After training, rinse your cap and dry at room temperature (but not on a radiator or under the scorching sun).

Who is it suitable for?

Keeps hair relatively dry

Thin, breaks from hairpins, electrifies hair, difficult to put on and take off, may be allergic to latex. need to be sprinkled with talcum powder

Glasses, a swimsuit or swimming trunks, a towel - this is not yet full list what a swimmer needs. You will also need a special cap to protect your hair. It’s not easy to choose this accessory; you can get lost in the modern variety of models. How to choose a swimming cap? What are the requirements for the product? All this is discussed below.

Why is it needed?

How to choose a swimming cap for swimming in a pool (river, sea, lake, etc.)? First, it is important to understand why this accessory is needed. So what are its functions?

  • Reliably protects hair from bleach, which serves to purify water.
  • Retains heat in the body.
  • Saves hair from getting wet and prevents water from entering the ears.
  • Hair does not interfere with swimming.

This product has many useful functions. In addition, a cap is necessary in the pool to prevent hair from polluting the water.

Latex

This accessory is made from various materials. For example, there is a latex swimming cap. Low price is perhaps the main advantage of such a product. Latex models are rapidly losing popularity. This is primarily due to the fact that they are made from a thin material that is unpleasant to the skin.

A latex cap is difficult to put on and take off, can cause allergies, and damages hair. It is also worth noting the fragility of the product. The latex model is only suitable for swimmers with short hair. It is not suitable for protecting long hair.

Silicone

Which product is suitable for long hair? A silicone swimming cap is an excellent choice. These models are elastic and easy to stretch. They are comfortable to use, easy to put on and take off, and dry quickly. Silicone products have a pleasant, durable texture. They are durable, but it is still better not to combine them with hairpins that can pierce the material. The fit to the head is ensured by thickening at the edges.

Silicone caps will appeal to those for whom not only comfort and convenience are important, but also appearance. A wide range of colors and designs are available to customers. These are the products that professional athletes prefer.

Silicone accessories also have a drawback. A tight fit of the cap to the head can cause a feeling of discomfort and become a source of headaches.

Fabric

How to choose a swimming cap for those who are not suitable for silicone and latex products? You can pay attention to fabric accessories, which are also confidently gaining popularity. They are made using the same materials from which swimsuits are made. Lycra, polyester are possible options.

Fabric hats are famous for their durability. They can be used together with hairpins without any worries. These products are soft and comfortable to wear. They can be easily removed and put on, without electrifying or damaging your hair. It should also be noted that these hats are affordable. The model range is quite wide, different colors and patterns are offered.

The main function of fabric accessories is to hide hair. They let water through, which can be called their main disadvantage. Caps do not provide reliable protection of strands from bleach. In addition, they take quite a long time to dry.

Fabric products are an excellent choice for those who do aqua aerobics. However, it is worth considering that they are not suitable for competitions. The products have a rough surface, which negatively affects the speed of movement in the water.

Combined

How to choose a swimming cap that has more advantages than disadvantages? In recent years, combined models have come into fashion. They are fabric products coated with silicone on the outside.

Such models are good because they almost do not allow water to pass through. Only at the edges the hair may become slightly wet. Combined products are practical and do not require complex care. They are pleasant to wear and easy to put on and take off. The durability of such products receives high marks.

Combination beanies are a great choice for training. However, silicone models are still more suitable for competitions. Their main drawback is their high cost. However, the durability of the products makes up for this.

Main selection criteria

How to choose the right swimming cap? To do this, you need to have an idea of the main selection criteria.

  • The cap must cover all the hair on your head. Then the strands will not interfere while swimming. This will also help keep you from freezing, since getting your hair wet leads to rapid loss heat. Finally, this is a mandatory requirement for hygiene in the pool.
  • The product should hide your ears. It is important that they are protected from water.
  • The cap should preserve the health of the hair and protect it from the destructive effects of bleach. Swimming should be beneficial, not harmful.

Professional swimmers must also consider the issue of ergonomics. They are suitable for an accessory that reduces water friction while moving.

What size should a swimming cap be?

It is important not only what material the accessory is made of. Another factor is also of great importance. How to choose the size of a swimming cap? First of all, it is worth understanding that these products are available for children and adults. The latter are distinguished by their large volume.

The volume of the product differs for different models. Therefore, the best way to choose a suitable hat is to try it on. The accessory should not put pressure or cause discomfort. You need to make sure that it is easy to put on and take off.

Children's models

How to choose a swimming cap for a child? Children's models are smaller in volume. The best way choose an accessory - try it on, but this is not always possible. In this case, you should measure the circumference of the child's head and then divide the result in half. Next, you need to measure the side of the cap (you can ask the seller for a ruler or a measuring tape), multiply the resulting figure by 1.7-1.8.

If your child has long hair or a large head, a baby hat may not be suitable for him. In this case, it is better to take for him the smallest product from the adult models. Among them there are also small and large sizes.

How to wear it correctly

If the size of the swimming cap is chosen correctly, then putting it on is easy. But it’s still better to practice at home.

  • You need to take the product with both hands. The hands are turned so that the palms are facing to the side. Then you should spread the material approximately 15-20 cm (depending on the diameter of the head circumference).
  • Next, you need to lean forward and place the front inner edge of the model to your forehead. It is convenient to help yourself with your thumbs.
  • Then you should distribute the cap over the entire surface of your head. Using your fingers, you need to tuck the stray strands. The accessory should cover the hair below the edge at the back of the head and hide the ears.
  • For maximum comfort, you need to “smooth” the product. Movements should be light.
  • Before putting on the cap, long hair can be tied with an elastic band or gathered into a bun on the top of the head. It is better to avoid using hairpins with sharp edges or bobby pins. All of these products can damage the material.
  • It's not easy to tuck your hair when the cap is already on. It is better to immediately try to remove the bangs and protruding ends under it. The product should not be worn on loose strands. Hair will come out while swimming, and the cap may slip off your head.
  • It is best to remove earrings when putting on an accessory. This is especially true for long products, which will create interference and cause discomfort. In addition, avoiding decorations ensures the safety of the material.

Professional swimmers wear their caps in a very original way. They first pour water into the product and then stick their head into it. The water flows out, no air bubble is formed in the cap. When putting a hat on a child, it is better to wet his hair first. The resulting bubble should be lightly slammed. Thanks to this, the product will not slide off your head in water.

How should the seam be placed? There are two options - from the forehead to the back of the head or from ear to ear. Both methods are considered correct; this one does not affect the swimming process in any way.

How to care

Caring for your pool cap depends on the material it is made from. However, there are general rules.

  • After each use, the product must be washed. This must be done with cold, clean water.
  • The accessory should be dried flat. At the same time, it should not be exposed to sunlight, it should be located away from heat sources.
  • The cap should not be allowed to come into contact with sharp objects. This list includes a variety of hairpins, hairpins, and earrings.

A latex product must be treated with talcum powder after drying.

An important criterion for the right choice is the material from which the product is made.

Materials

  • Latex is elastic rubber. Elements of equipment made from it are widely available and the least expensive. The main disadvantages are low strength, discomfort when putting on and taking off, limited service life
  • Advice: After training, sprinkle the latex with talcum powder to prevent it from sticking together.

Thanks to their dynamic properties, they effectively reduce resistance, which helps to increase sports results. Silicone has anti-allergenic properties and is characterized by a wide range of design solutions in shape, color and texture
  • Important: This model does not tolerate sharp objects, so when pinning long strands, avoid using hairpins and hairpins.
  • Combination of materials. These models organically combine the reliability of silicone (top layer) and the comfort of textiles (inner layer). It does not electrify the hair, the cap is convenient to put on and take off, and is easy to care for. The main disadvantage is the high price

Swimming cap for infants: video

A swimming cap is a piece of swimmer’s equipment that performs several functions:

    protects ears from water getting into them;

    protects hair from the negative effects of chlorinated water and getting wet (it is worth noting that no model can provide complete protection against getting wet when diving);

    reduces water resistance, therefore increases swimming speed;

    protects against hypothermia: it is known that a person loses the lion’s share of heat through the surface of the head;

    removes hair from the face, which prevents hair from getting into the eyes or getting tangled;

    prevents hair from getting into the water and pool filters, which means clogging them. Wearing a swimming cap is a requirement for swimming in many pools.

Purpose

In addition to the usual models designed for swimming in the pool, the following types of swimming caps are available.

Starting– designed for professional swimmers performing in competitions. It has high hydrodynamic properties: it perfectly follows the contours of the head and does not form folds, therefore allowing the athlete to develop high speed. In certain areas of the head it may have different thicknesses. However, the price of this model is much higher than regular hats.

Water polo– used for team game in water polo. Unlike conventional models, this cap is equipped with special plastic inserts (ear protectors) that protect the ears from flying balls, careless actions of players, and various impacts.

For long hair– consists of a fabric bandana and an outer cap. This design allows you to first remove your hair and then put on the cap.

Material

Latex the cap is inexpensive, but has a number of disadvantages: it is thin, easily torn, difficult to put on the head, and sticks to the hair, which leads to it being torn out when removed. In addition, a latex cap electrifies the hair and can cause allergies. This product is only suitable for people with very short hair. A latex cap can, as an exception, be used as a spare cap.

Important: To prevent the latex cap from sticking together, after drying it should be treated with talc.

Silicone The cap is strong, durable and elastic (stretches 2 times): it is easy to put on and take off. The product does not allow water to pass through and fits tightly to the head, but does not stick to the hair and does not tear it out when removed. The silicone cap provides minimal friction with water, which means it effectively reduces water resistance. This model does not cause allergies and is distinguished by a variety of colors and patterns.

All these advantages make a silicone cap the optimal choice in most cases. It is good for people with long hair. However, the price of such a product is higher than the latex model. In addition, for some sensitive people, the silicone cap can cause very strong discomfort, as they feel, by squeezing the forehead and ears.

Meet seamless And suture silicone caps. In theory, seamless models are stronger, but in practice, suture models demonstrate high strength and reliability.

The silicone cap is easy to care for: just rinse it in water and dry it at room temperature.

Important: Although the silicone cap is quite durable, hairpins can damage it. Therefore, it is recommended to use elastic bands to secure long hair. Before putting on a hat, it is better to remove sharp earrings and jewelry from your hands - they can also damage the product.

Fabric(polyester, lycra, polyamide, elastomer) – inexpensive and soft hat: very easy to put on and take off; does not electrify the hair and does not squeeze the head.

The fabric model allows water to pass through and increases friction in the water: suitable for water aerobics and beginner swimmers, but not for speed swimming. The only property of a fabric cap is to keep hair out of the pool.

Important: You can use hairpins with a fabric hat: a few small holes will not affect its quality in any way.

Combined cap - consists of two materials: silicone ( outer part) and fabric ( inner part). This combines the strength of silicone and the softness of fabric. The combined cap is easy to put on and take off, does not allow water to pass through and does not electrify the hair, and is easy to care for. This model is the most practical and convenient, but also expensive.

A combination cap is an ideal choice for training and water aerobics, but it is not suitable for speed swimming competitions due to the fabric. In this case, it is better to opt for a smooth silicone model.

Rubber cap- outdated option. Unlike the silicone model, it is not as elastic, but quite strong and wear-resistant.

Size

Swimming caps come in sizes for adults (men's/women's) and children's. The children's model differs from the adult hat in its smaller volume. Some manufacturers offer medium-sized models designed for people with small heads or teenagers.

Sometimes you can find the following gradation of sizes:

  • Category 1 – children’s;
  • Category 2 – universal;
  • Category 3 – for people with very large heads.

The hat is selected with mandatory fitting. This is the only way to evaluate how convenient a particular model is. The main criterion is that the cap should not put too much pressure on the head.

Design

A modern hat can act as a decorative accessory. There are models in retro style (with a strap fastened to the chin) or with a three-dimensional pattern. Women's hats are often decorated with floral decorations.

For people with long hair, interesting models have been developed with a special notch for hair in the form of a small comb or mohawk on the top of the head.

Children's models are distinguished by a bright design: they are designed in the form of an animal's face, depicting cartoon and fairy tale characters. The design of the water polo cap is selected taking into account the team symbols.

To emphasize your individuality, you can choose models that have the same colors and patterns as the swimsuit.

  • Before putting it on, you should gather your long hair into a bun slightly above the back of your head.
  • Place the cap on your palm and stretch it out different sides. After that, you need to slightly tilt your head forward and put on the cap from the top of your head, pulling it over your forehead, temples and the back of your head. The ears should be completely covered.
  • If necessary, you can smooth the cap with your palms so that it sits comfortably on your head.
  • When putting on the suture cap, the seam is placed along the head (from the forehead to the back of the head).
  • Before putting it on, you can wet your hair with water if it becomes very electrified.
  • After use, you should rinse the cap in cold running water and dry it at room temperature, but it is important to avoid exposing the product to sunlight. In this case, it is desirable that the cap be as straight as possible.

Manufacturer

The first criterion for choosing a hat is convenience, the second is quality. Among the brands that produce clothing and accessories for swimming, the undoubted leader is Arena: best quality and range of products. No matter how cheap a hat from an unnamed manufacturer is, the Arena brand probably has a model in the same price range. Also good are caps from specialized brands, Beco, Head, Speedo, Volna and others. They are durable and last a long time without changing color or size.

The cheapest hats from little-known brands, for example, Sprinter or Intex, as a rule, quickly tear and are difficult to put on.
