MAIN CHANGES

  • From now on, 26 teams will automatically qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stage, including the winners of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League. Six more participants will be determined during qualification.
  • Every team eliminated in the Champions League qualifying will have a chance to succeed in the Europa League.
  • 17 teams will qualify directly for the group stage of the Europa League, another 10 teams will automatically receive tickets to the main draw after being eliminated from the playoff round and the third qualifying round Champions League. The remaining 21 places will be played in qualifications, divided into two paths (Champions Path and Main Path).
  • A preliminary round of qualification has been introduced in the Champions League (a mini-tournament with a knockout game will be held) and in the Europa League (two-legged confrontations).
  • There will be no changes to the main draw of both tournaments, with the exception of the staggered matches - 18:55 CET and 21:00 CET - in the Champions League and Europa League.

  • If the reigning Europa League winner qualifies to play in the group stage based on domestic results, the vacated spot will be filled by the third-placed fifth-placed championship (France), who would otherwise have qualified for the League Representative Path.
  • One association can be represented in the group stage by a maximum of five clubs.

Qualification

  • As now, teams will compete in two different brackets: the Champion Path and the League Representative Path. The selection will include teams from the list of participants based on the end of the 2016/17 season.

Champions Path (four group stage berths)

The champions of associations ranked 11th and below will play in this route. Qualification will begin with a preliminary round, followed by three qualifying rounds and a playoff round:

  • Preliminary round (will be played using a mini-tournament system with a knockout game): four teams
  • First qualifying round: 33 teams plus preliminary round winner
  • Second qualifying round: three teams plus 17 first qualifying round winners
  • Third qualifying round: two teams plus 10 winners of the second qualifying round
  • Play-off round: two teams plus six third qualifying round winners

All teams eliminated from the Champions Path from the preliminary round to the third qualifying round will have the chance to progress to the Europa League, where they will compete in the Champions Path for the corresponding qualifying round. Teams eliminated in the play-off round will automatically qualify for the Europa League group stage.

League representative path (two trips to the group stage)

The winners of third places from associations occupying fifth and sixth places in the ranking, as well as vice-champions of associations ranked from seventh to 15th places, will play here. In total, three qualifying rounds will be played:

  • Second qualifying round: six teams
  • Third qualifying round: five teams plus the three winners of the second qualifying round
  • Play-off round: four winners from the third qualifying round

Teams that lose in the second qualifying round of the League Path will continue the European Cup season in the third qualifying round of the Europa League Path. Teams eliminated in the third qualifying round of the League Path or the play-off round will enter directly into the Europa League group stage.

UEFA EUROPE LEAGUE

Group stage

  • Will automatically qualify for the group stage 17 clubs from the list of participants based on the end of the 2016/17 season.

  • Ten teams those who will reach the group stage after elimination from the Champions League are the six losers of the League Representative Path (losers of the third qualifying round and the play-off round) and the four teams that will leave the Champions League after the play-off round in the Champions Path bracket.

  • From the 2018/19 season, teams will compete in two different brackets: Champions Path and Main Path. The selection will include teams from, compiled on the basis of the end of the 2016/17 season.

Path of Champions (8 group stage berths)

The teams that will be eliminated from the Champions League between the preliminary round and the third qualifying round of the Champions Path will play here. In total, three qualifying rounds will be played:

  • Second qualifying round: 20 teams eliminated from the Champions League after the preliminary round and first qualifying round
  • Third qualifying round: 10 teams eliminated from the Champions League after the second qualifying round plus 10 winners of the second qualifying round of the Europa League Champions Path
  • Play-off round: six teams eliminated from the Champions League after the third qualifying round plus 10 winners from the third qualifying round of the Europa League Champions Path

Main path (13 group stage berths)

The remaining Europa League participants from all 55 national associations will play here, plus the teams that leave the Champions League after defeat at the second qualifying round stage in the League Path bracket.

  • Preliminary round: 16 teams
  • First qualifying round: 86 teams plus eight preliminary round winners
  • Second qualifying round: 27 teams plus 47 winners from the first qualifying round
  • Third qualifying round: 15 teams (including the three clubs that exited the Champions League after losing at the second qualifying round stage in the League Path bracket) plus 37 second qualifying round winners
  • Play-off round: 26 third qualifying round winners
