KHL schedule 2017/2018
The championship starts on August 21, 2017, and finishes in April next year. The established calendar will be significantly changed due to the Olympics, which will take place in the Korean city of Pyeongchang from February 9 to 25, 2018. Therefore, the HC leagues will not play for almost the entire month of February. Here's what the approximate schedule for the upcoming edition of the championship looks like:
- August 21, 2017 – early February 2018: regular season;
- early March – April: 2018 Gagarin Cup playoffs.
There will also be short breaks in the season calendar due to the stages of the Euro Hockey Tour 2017/2018.
Championship teams
In total, at least 28 clubs will compete for the Gagarin Cup in the future edition of the tournament. The most serious hockey masters of the Continental League 2017/2018 will again represent the Western Conference. Here is their list:

Tournament news
In the KHL standings for the 2017–2018 season, fans will no longer see HC Medvescak. The Croats left the championship, unable to cope with the financial burden. From next season the club will again play in the Austrian League.
The Croats should be replaced by one or even several teams. So far, sources of varying degrees of reliability are wooing three teams into the championship.

An ambitious project of Estonian businessmen. The organizers intend to create a team with stable funding and a good composition. According to plans, the club was supposed to appear in the KHL in 2016. However, the team remained on paper. KHL regular season
The first phase of the KHL is a regular season in which each team plays 4 matches with opponents from its division, 2 matches with teams from another division of its conference, and one meeting with clubs from another conference. Also, each team holds four more meetings with opponents from its division, and the matches are compiled with the aim of maximizing the intrigue in the championship. In total, during the Regular Season, teams play 60 matches, determining the winners of divisions and conferences, as well as forming pairs next stage season - playoffs.
KHL Playoffs
The top 8 teams from each conference continue to fight for the Gagarin Cup, playing elimination series up to four wins. The Continental Hockey League (KHL) is an open international league that unites clubs from Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, China, Latvia and Finland. There are currently 24 teams in the league, which are divided into Western and Eastern conferences and 4 divisions based on geography.

The start of the 2018-2019 KHL season will take place on September 1 at the Kazan Arena. The opening match will feature the winner of the Gagarin Cup, Kazan's AK Bars, and the winner of the Continental Cup, St. Petersburg's SKA. The regular championship starts the next day and will last until February 22. Each team in the league will play 62 matches, the results of which will determine 16 best clubs- playoff participants. Among the main innovations KHL calendar 2018-2019 we note:
- September 7 will now become a game day (previously, matches were not held on this day due to the tragedy of HC Lokomotiv);
- the KHL All-Star game will take place in Kazan from January 18 to 20 and will include a competition day along with a tournament among divisions;
- on ice arenas Western Europe in Vienna and Zurich there will be scheduled matches “Slovan” - “CSKA” and “CSKA” - “Dynamo” (Riga);
- On January 20, the second outdoor match in the history of the league will take place in Riga, in which local Dynamo will compete with Jokerit or Slovan.
The 2018-2019 KHL season will end no later than April 25. On this day, if necessary, the seventh match of the final series between the best clubs of the Western and Eastern conferences will take place. As a result, the wishes of the FHR were realized, requesting at least two weeks of preparation for the national team for the upcoming season. There has been much discussion about keeping September 7th as a day off from KHL matches, but with a busy schedule, every date counted. However, all teams that will take to the ice on September 7 will play with mourning ribbons in memory of the Lokomotiv hockey players who died in the plane crash.
There were some “overlays”
The KHL match schedule for the 2018-2019 season includes a number of breaks in accordance with the IIHF calendar. Among them are breaks in games:
- November 8-11 (Eurotour in Finland);
- December 13-16 (Eurotour in Russia);
- February 7-10 (Eurotour in Sweden).
The KHL management acted on principle and did not cancel the big game day on November 12. Considering the fact that on the eve of the 11th the Russian national team will play its match in Helsinki, not all players will be able to arrive at the location of their clubs. And if you can fly to Moscow or St. Petersburg overnight, then, for example, to Omsk, Kazan or Cherepovets it is unlikely to be possible. As a result, coaches of a number of teams will have to rack their brains over starting lineup November 11.
Who will take part in the championship?
The 2018-2019 KHL will be played by those who will play at least two matches with the other participants (on their own ice and in the opponent’s arena). The clubs will play an additional two matches with each other within their division and two games with randomly selected opponents from other divisions. Torpedo was transferred to the Eastern Conference, the question of whose participation was acute before the start of the KHL 2018-2019. Fortunately for local fans, the team bosses found financial reserves, almost completely paying off the salary arrears to the players. The Dynamo (Minsk) and Slovan clubs were transferred to the Tarasov division, and their places in the Bobrov division were taken by Dynamo Moscow and Severstal.
Tournament regulations
The 2018-2019 KHL Championship did not undergo major changes. As before, the league standings will be formed based on the points scored in matches. A win in regulation time (over three periods) will award 3 points. If the match is won in extra time or in a shootout, the winner is awarded 2 points, and the losing team is awarded 1 point. This is the main difference between the tournament and the NHL, where changes were introduced last year: a team is now awarded two points for a victory, including if it is won in extra time. The losing team in extra time is awarded 1 point.
The top 8 teams from each conference advance to the Gagarin Cup playoffs. Pairs are formed according to the “crosswise” principle, that is, the first team will play with the eighth, the second with the seventh, etc. Knockout games are played up to four victories in the series of one of the clubs, and if the match is a draw after three periods , a 10-minute overtime is assigned until the first goal is scored. In the final series, the best hockey teams of the “West” and “East” will compete for the Gagarin Cup.
The 2018-2019 KHL calendar provides for a huge number of matches that will take place in fierce competition.
