In the 2017 season, Formula 1 came to Malaysia for the 19th and last time V modern history. The organizers did not renew the contract, citing the government's refusal to finance it, and compared to the night race in neighboring Singapore, the Sepang stage looked much less impressive.

The traditional factors of the Malaysian weekend - heat, humidity and unpredictable weather - affected this time too. Rain poured down the track on Friday, preventing the first practice session; it rained on the morning of the race, but subsided an hour and a half before the start. The drainage system, updated last year, did an excellent job, but a broken cover on one of the hatches on Friday led to a wheel rupture and a spectacular crash for Romain Grosjean, which forced an early stop in the second practice session. Representatives of the FIA and technical services of the circuit then double-checked all drainage hatches.

On Friday, the Red Bull Racing drivers were very fast on a wet track; on a dry track, the Ferrari drivers had an advantage, but Lewis Hamilton won the qualification. Mercedes had its share of problems over the course of the weekend, the tires could not be made to work, but in qualifying the asphalt temperature dropped slightly, and Hamilton's main rival for the title unexpectedly dropped out of the fight.

At the end of Saturday's practice, the engine power of Vettel's car dropped, it was decided to replace it, but in qualifying the problems continued - as a result, the German did not complete a single fast lap. Before the race, the power plant components on his car were replaced by installing a fifth engine, turbine and MGU-H, but the penalty with the loss of 20 positions did not affect anything - Vettel started last anyway.

There were no other fines. Hamilton and Räikkönen shared the front row of the grid. Verstappen and Ricciardo are second, Bottas and Ocon start from third. Sergio Perez was not feeling well due to stomach problems. Pierre Gasly replaced Daniil Kvyat in Toro Rosso - the stage in Malaysia was the first in the Frenchman's career.

After leaving the pits, Raikkonen complained about the operation of the power plant, he got to the starting field, where the mechanics took care of the car. It was not possible to resolve the problem promptly. The car was rolled into the pits, Kimi was unable to participate in the race.

Tire makers brought Medium, Soft and SuperSoft compounds to Sepang. Before the start, the asphalt remained slightly damp after the rain, including on the even side of the starting field. Wehrlein, Ericsson and Vettel started on Soft, the rest started the race on SuperSoft.

At the start, Hamilton retained the lead. Bottas made a great start, moving up to third place, Vandoorne to fifth. Ocon and Massa collided at Turn 2 but continued to race. The Williams drivers were ahead of Hulkenberg. Vettel made several overtakes, rising to 12th place.

On lap 38, Palmer spun at turn 14 with no consequences to the car. Magnussen attacked Palmer - contact occurred.

Sebastian Vettel, after starting from last place, finished the race in fourth, minimizing losses, but was unable to return to the pits due to a collision with Stroll on a slow lap. Sebastian was given a lift to the pits by Pascal Wehrlein.

Next week the fight will continue in Suzuka.

Malaysia says goodbye to Formula 1. Or Formula 1 says goodbye to Malaysia. Whatever you say - this weekend the last Grand Prix in the history of this country is taking place at the Serang circuit - back in April it became known that the contract with FOM (Formula One Management) would not be renewed, and the race in 2017 would be the last. And before the next racing weekend, the Malaysian side once again announced.

As always, before qualifying, the pilots conducted three free practice sessions. And in the first training session, the teams allowed their reservists to drive the cars. At Renault, instead of Nico Hulkenberg, Russian Sergei Sirotkin took to the track, at Haas, Antonio Giovinazzi replaced Kevin Magnussen, Charles Leclerc did laps for Sauber instead of Marcus Ericsson, and Sean Gelael instead of Carlos Sainz for Toro Rosso.

Let us remind you that in the Malaysian Grand Prix 2017 - by decision of the Toro Rosso team management, Pierre Gasly, who is the first candidate for the seat, sits in the car instead of him Carlos Sainz. The same story will repeat itself at the Japanese Grand Prix.

As for the training sessions, Red Bull driver Max Verstappen became the best in the first session, Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel became the fastest in the second session, and his teammate Kimi Raikkonen topped the protocol in the third.

Lewis Hamilton has won the most pole positions in Malaysia - he started from first place four times (2012, 2014, 2015 and ). Fernando Alonso (2003, 2005), Felipe Massa (2007, 2008) and Sebastian Vettel (2011, 2013) have won qualifying twice each. Moreover, according to statistics, out of 18 races held in Sepang, only 9 were won by the driver who started in first place.

In the first part of qualifying, Lewis Hamilton showed the best time. Max Verstappen was second and Valtteri Bottas third. The slowest drivers were Haas drivers Roman Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen, as well as Sauber drivers Pascal Wehrlein and Marcus Ericsson.

Sebastian Vettel also joined the outsiders - while still in training, the Ferrari driver had problems with the engine, due to which it had to be changed, but after the first lap in the first qualifying session, the German driver returned to the pits with complaints about the turbines. As a result, Vettel did not drive a single fast lap and showed no results. Seb was allowed into the race by a special decision of the stewards and will start last. Or from the pit lane, if Ferrari mechanics violate the rules of the closed park for the sake of repairs.

In the second qualifying round the fastest were Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes), Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari) and Max Verstappen (Red Bull) - it is worth noting that the gap between second and third place was only five thousandths of a second! Williams drivers Felipe Massa and Lance Stroll, Jolyon Palmer from Renault and Toro Rosso drivers Carlos Sainz and Pierre Gasly lost much more to the leaders - they did not qualify for the final qualifying round.

In the qualifying final, Lewis Hamilton again became the strongest - the Mercedes driver won the fifth and final pole in Malaysia, which also became his 9th this season and 70th in his career. Kimi Raikkonen will start from second position, and Max Verstappen will start from third. Next, if there are no penalties, Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull), Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes), Esteban Ocon (Force India), Stoffel Vandoorne (McLaren), Nico Hulkenberg (Renault), Sergio Perez (Force India) will be at the start ) and Fernando Alonso (McLaren).

Let us remind you that after 14 stages, Lewis Hamilton was 28 points ahead of his main rival, Sebastian Vettel, who retired due to a starting mix-up at . Taking into account the failure in qualifying, we can safely say that the Ferrari driver will be angrier than usual in the race, because there is too little time left until the end of the championship to allow himself to make mistakes. But we shouldn’t forget technical “miracles” when leaders suddenly , preventing us from reaching certain victory. Besides, just winning the last (!) Malaysian Grand Prix is doubly pleasant. So an interesting race awaits us.

Today at 10:00 Moscow time the Malaysian Grand Prix starts on October 1, 2017 at the Sepang Circuit in Kuala Lumpur. After the Singapore Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton became the leader.

Malaysian Grand Prix October 1, 2017. Announcement
The main feature of the Formula 1 race at the 15th stage of the Malaysian Grand Prix is that Sebastian Vettel was unable to start, as the mechanics did not have time to change the engine on his car before the end of the first segment. The stewards decided to allow Sebastian Vettel to the start of the Malaysian Grand Prix in last place on the grid.

In the overall standings, Sebastian Vettel has 235 points and Lewis Hamilton has 263 points.

Characteristics of the racing track at Sepang Circuit (Kuala Lumpur). The drivers must complete 56 laps, the length of each lap is 5.543 km, the length of the race is 310.408 km.

And yet Sebastian Vettel is a great driver. From the last position to reach the 4th position at the finish line is expensive.

Almost every year at least one session of the Malaysian Grand Prix takes place in the rain, and this year was no exception, despite the fact that the stage was postponed to autumn. The rain began before the start of the first training session, because of this the start of the training had to be postponed.

On the eve of the Malaysian Grand Prix, representatives of Toro Rosso announced that during this stage they would work with Pierre Gasly, who took the place of Daniil Kvyat.

On Friday, the Red Bull drivers were confidently in the lead on the wet track. In the afternoon the asphalt dried out, and in such conditions Ferrari had the advantage.

During free practice in Malaysia, a drainage manhole cover broke on the track and Roman Grosjean drove into it. After this collision, the Frenchman received a puncture and crashed into a barrier. Haas employees had to restore the car - FIA representatives allowed them to break the curfew rule.

Mercedes had problems and because of this they had no pace. The reigning champions tried to solve the problems that arose.

At the end of the final practice session, Vettel's car had engine problems. The German received a new engine before qualifying, but it also had problems, so the Ferrari driver did not participate in qualifying, although the results of the free practice sessions indicated that he was the main contender for pole.

As a result, Hamilton won pole position, Raikkonen showed second time, and Verstappen finished third.

Vettel's car had a new internal combustion engine, turbine and MGU-H installed, so he was punished by the loss of 20 places on the grid, but this did not affect starting position German - he already had to start the race from last place.

On the way to the starting grid, Räikkönen experienced engine problems. On the grid, Ferrari employees tried to solve this problem, but they were unable to do so, so Kimi's car was returned to the pits. Raikkonen did not participate in the race.

Pirelli brought three medium tire compounds to Malaysia: Medium, Soft and SuperSoft. Vettel, Ericsson and Wehrlein started on Soft, and everyone else started on SuperSoft.

At the start, Hamilton retained the lead. Bottas was able to climb to third position, and Vandoorne to fifth. Massa and Ocon collided but continued to fight. Hulkenberg was overtaken by Massa and Stroll. Vettel moved up to 12th place.

After contact with Massa, Ocon suffered a puncture, so he made a pit stop.

The leader complained about problems with ERS. On lap 4, Max Verstappen caught up with Hamilton and passed him. The Red Bull driver began to pull away.

On the 8th lap, Perez overtook Vandoorne, on the 9th, Ricciardo was able to get ahead of Bottas. Vettel continued his breakthrough - he was ahead of Alonso and Magnussen and moved up to 9th place.

On the 10th lap, Hulkenberg made a pit stop, on the 11th, Magnussen did it, on the 12th - Massa and Grosjean, on the 13th - Gasly, on the 14th - Palmer and Vandoorne.

Stroll overtook Massa, and Vandoorne overtook Wehrlein. On lap 21, Vettel overtook Perez and moved up to fifth position.

On the 25th lap there was contact between Ocon and Sainz, after which Esteban spun.

Vettel closed in on Bottas. On the 26th lap, Lewis Hamilton turned into the pits, on the 27th lap, Alonso did it, on the 28th - Vettel and Verstappen, on the 29th - Bottas. Valtteri returned to the track behind Vettel.

On lap 30, Sainz had engine problems and retired. Ricciardo and Perez made pit stops.

Alonso overtook Magnussen. On the 38th lap, Palmer's car spun.

Vettel began to rapidly catch up with Ricciardo. The German was able to set a new track record in Malaysia.

On lap 48, Sebastian was able to use the DRS system, but Daniel successfully repelled all attacks. The tires on Vettel's car lost their effectiveness, so Ricciardo was able to pull away a little.

Verstappen won the race in Malaysia, with Hamilton finishing second and Ricciardo third. Vettel finished the race in fourth, but he was unable to return to the pits - he collided with Lance Stroll on a slow lap. Wehrlein gave Vettel a ride to the pits. In addition, Vettel set the best lap of the race - 1.34.080, thereby breaking Juan Pablo Montoya's 2004 record.

For Verstappen, the victory in Malaysia was the second in his career. Stoffel Vandoorne repeated his best result in career - 7th place. Pierre Gasly finished 14th in his debut race.
