Since 2005, the Olympics have been organized by Moscow State University and the Moskovsky Komsomolets Publishing House. Its main goal is to find talented young people from different regions of Russia. Every year tens of thousands of schoolchildren participate in the Olympiad, hundreds of them reach the finals and become students of Moscow State University.
I’ll tell you how the Olympics are going and what to pay attention to when preparing.
What does the Olympics consist of?
Quests Olympiads are divided into two categories: for participants from grades 5–9 and separately for 10–11. For high school students' work, the evaluation criteria are more stringent.
For example, at the Social Science Olympiad, both write essays, but schoolchildren from grades 5–9 must:
- Define and analyze basic social science concepts
- Know names and concepts
- Clearly formulate your position and justify it with examples from literature, history, public and personal life
- Maintain the logic of presentation and compliance with the norms of the Russian literary language
And participants from grades 10–11 must additionally:
- Clearly define the problem
- Find and highlight the author's arguments
- Carry out a serious analysis of the statement, noting positive or vulnerabilities in the author's position
- Competently operate with social science concepts, terms, classifications, approaches, using references to the opinions of scientists and citing their names. In addition, creativity in answering questions and originality of thinking are highly appreciated
Stages. The Olympics takes place in two stages:
1. Qualifying - carried out remotely, tasks come after registration in your personal account on the official website of the Olympiad. The schedule is updated every year, but registration usually begins in November, testing itself takes place at the end of December, and results are announced before February 1.
After the participant receives the task in his personal account, he must select a time for the session. For execution test task given from one to several hours, for a creative task - a longer period. For example, they give you a week to complete an essay in social studies. You can answer the Olympiad questions only in one sitting - a repeat session is not possible.
2. Final - held in Moscow at Moscow State University or at regional venues in Kemerovo, Ufa, Yekaterinburg, Saratov and Stavropol. Benefits
Victory or a prize at the Olympiad “Conquer the Sparrow Hills!” given at Moscow State University, the Higher School of Economics and other well-known Russian universities. At the beginning of the academic year, a list of benefits, including those for Olympiads, is posted on the website of each university.

The “Conquer the Sparrow Hills” Olympics has been held since 2005 in Russia and the regions of Russia. The organizer of the Olympiad is Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov". The Olympics are held under the auspices Russian Council of School Olympiads(RSOSH) and is included in List of Olympiads for schoolchildren, established by the Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation (number 41). It is held in absentia and remotely on-line using the Internet on the official website of the “Conquer the Sparrow Hills” Olympiad. Registration is ongoing for the 2018/2019 academic year from November 1, 2018 to December 2018.
First (qualifying) stage
It is carried out in absentia and remotely online using the Internet. In the 2018/2019 academic year, the qualifying stage takes place during from November 2018 to December 2018. Each academic subject has its own period for completing assignments. For students in grades 5-9, the qualifying stage of the Olympiad takes place throughout the entire period of participation; for students in grades 10-11, the qualifying stage of the Olympiad takes place within 168 hours from the start of completing tasks.
Second (final) stage
It is held in person in the cities and institutions of the co-organizers of the Olympiad. In the 2018/2019 academic year, the final stage takes place at a strictly fixed time during February-March 2019. In the 2017/2018 academic year, there was no venue for the Olympiad in Chelyabinsk. The closest site is the Utes sanatorium.

Winners and prize-winners of the graduating class receive benefits when entering higher educational institutions of the Russian Federation. Conquer the Sparrow Hills is multidisciplinary, which means that by registering, the participant will have the opportunity to demonstrate knowledge in various subjects, including:

The main goal of the interregional intellectual tournament is to search for and support talented and promising youth from the outback. The organizers believe that every gifted school graduate, regardless of place of residence, should have the right to successfully enter a university, like the great Lomonosov himself once did.

The following are allowed to participate in the Olympiad:
- students of educational institutions of different formats;
- children who are homeschooled and studying abroad;
- citizens of the Russian Federation, as well as persons who are citizens of another country or who do not have citizenship.
Format
The Olympics takes place in two rounds:
- Correspondence (qualifying round), allowing participants to complete tasks online.
- Full-time (final), which traditionally takes place both within the walls of Moscow State University and in regional centers for the Olympics.
Qualifying correspondence round
The first stage for everyone who wants to take part in the intellectual competition from Moscow State University will be official registration, which must be completed on the Olympiad website (pvg.mk.ru).
Registered users receive access to a personal account, through which the online qualifying round will be directly conducted.
Important! When registering, provide only reliable information, as if you are unable to confirm the information specified in your profile, you will lose the opportunity to take part in the final face-to-face competition.
Students in grades 5-11 are given a whole month to complete the tasks of the Olympiad. They can build their individual participation schedule, observing the basic requirements of the regulations in such a way that they have time to complete all work before the end of the competition.
To solve the task for each of the proposed profiles, one session is allocated (7 calendar days / 168 hours). From the moment the participant receives tasks in his personal account, the countdown begins.
Final
The right to participate in the final round of the 2018-2019 academic year is given to:
- Winners and prize-winners of the 2018-2019 correspondence round.
- Winners and runners-up of the final round of 2017-2018 (provided that they have not yet completed 11th grade).
At the time of registration at the point of the final round of the Olympics, participants must have with them:
- participant statement + 3 photos size 3x4;
- an identity document (from 14 years of age this is a passport, up to 14 years of age - a school card with a stamp and photograph);
- a statement from parents (or guardians) confirming permission to collect and process the child’s personal data (original handwritten);
- certificate from the educational institution.
Benefits for winners and runners-up
Become an absentee participant qualifying round and complete all tasks with dignity - excellent result for students in grades 5-10. But future graduates strive for more. Their goal is a winner’s diploma (1st place) or at least a prize-winner’s diploma (2nd or 3rd place), because such awards automatically provide the opportunity to receive benefits when entering Moscow State University and other large universities in the country.
