As it became known today, the St. Petersburg basketball club “Spartak” is closing, and this decision is final. The club stopped supporting him main sponsor OJSC NOVATEK, as well as another sponsor, SIBUR holding (co-owners of the companies are Gennady Timchenko and Leonid Mikhelson). Now athletes have no money to survive. Until now, maintaining the club cost about 250 million rubles a year. Most of the money was transferred by sponsors. The club itself made only a little money from the sale of merchandise and tickets. The dp.ru club confirmed information about its final disbandment.

At the same time, the fate of the SIBUR Arena basketball complex on Football Alley on Krestovsky Island, also known as the Spartak Stadium, remains unclear. The complex opened recently, on September 1, 2013. It has been planned to be built since 2007. At that time, the construction cost was estimated at 250 million rubles. Over time, the Spartak basketball club and its sponsors decided to carry out large-scale construction. The design was delayed, and construction began in 2010, it was carried out by STGM LLC, and Ekostroyproekt LLC was the general designer. The project has risen in price five times compared to the original plans.

As a result, the complex on Krestovsky cost 1.3 billion rubles. As the Spartak basketball club clarified to dp.ru, 500 million rubles of this money were allocated from the budget of St. Petersburg. Another 400 million rubles were invested by the non-profit society "Charity Fund for the Support and Development of the Spartak Basketball Club" and the SIBUR holding. The club support fund, according to the Spark system, belongs to Stimul LLC. At the same time, until the end of 2023, real estate Stimula is held by SIBUR as collateral for a loan of 250 million rubles.

Thus, the SIBUR Arena will be shared between Smolny and the SIBUR holding. In Smolny they remember their rights to the arena. Vice-Governor of St. Petersburg Vasily Kichedzhi already referred to the stadium when explaining the reasons for the refusal to finance the club. He recalled that half a billion was allocated from the budget for the stadium so that Spartak would locate its office there and train for free. Kichedji noted that this is already a significant contribution.

“Now we will move out and the territory of the complex will be occupied by new companies,” the Spartak club told dp.ru. They also added that Smolny received its benefit from investing in construction: officials could provide part of the sites and offices free of charge to whomever they considered necessary. The basketball complex is located in an elite area on Krestovsky Can. It contains not only training grounds, but also a gym, dance halls, yoga rooms, a swimming pool, a dining room, a restaurant, a press center, office premises that were occupied by Spartak, and even premises that can be used as a mini-hotel.

Apparently, this construction was of least interest to its main investors - Gennady Timchenko and Leonid Mikhelson. They never received the benefit they might have expected. The fact is that cooperation between businessmen and the Spartak basketball club began during the governorship of Valentina Matvienko. It was believed that the sponsorship of Spartak was the result of Matvienko’s agreement with these two businessmen, and a kind of voluntary-compulsory burden for them.

At that time, NOVATEK participated in the implementation of the New Coast project. This is an alluvial area of 510 hectares near Sestroretsk, which was planned to be built up with buildings with a total area of 2.5 million m2: residential buildings several floors high and business centers. Along the coast they planned to organize a 5 km long beach and a yacht club with a harbor for 400 ships. Construction was undertaken by North-West Invest LLC, another company of Leonid Mikhelson. At the same time, the city had to invest 10 billion rubles in preparing the infrastructure around the reclamation area. Including, at the expense of the St. Petersburg budget, schools, kindergartens and similar buildings were to be built in the district.

The current governor of St. Petersburg, Georgy Poltavchenko, abandoned this project and transferred 10 billion rubles to the shoulders of businessmen. After this, they lost interest in “New Shore” and the project was frozen. The point in sponsoring Spartak is also gone. However, both Leonid Mikhelson and Gennady Timchenko have repeatedly rejected this relationship in conversations with journalists.
