Match preview

United will be attempting to win the competition for the first time since 2010, while manager Jose Mourinho could win the League Cup for the fourth time in his career.

The Mancunians are the undisputed favorites for the upcoming clash, but Hull will be motivated by the fact that they have never reached a League Cup final before. New coach Hull's Marco Silva has already made a good impression by beating Swansea in the FA Cup third round and will now look to build on that success with a win over United.

Team news

After United's win over Reading in the FA Cup, Mourinho said he was resting the players who will play against Hull.

“Today I put fresh players on the field,” Sky Sports quotes the head coach, “those who did not play with” West Ham om." The next match, against Hull, will feature fresh players again. So you can imagine our team, it will be Zlatan (Ibrahimovic), (Paul) Pogba, (Ander) Herrera, (Antonio) Valencia, those who did not play today.

Silva, meanwhile, is likely to field the same line-up that beat Swansea, given Hull had not won a game since November.

Preview

United have won eight games in a row in all competitions and have not lost since early November.

Mourinho's Red Devils have emerged as a serious force in the Premier League and their loss in the League Cup semi-final could come as a big surprise.

A convincing victory for United in the upcoming meeting could guarantee them a place at Wembley, despite return match in Hull on January 26th.

The Tigers could greatly improve their chances of reaching the competition's final if they avoid defeat at Old Trafford, but despite their recent victory over Swansea, it will be a difficult task for them.

United's stars have recently gained good shape, and Ibrahimovic and Pogba were nominated for the title Best player months in the Premier League.

"Hull" on at the moment takes last place in the tournament nuclear submarine table, and in their recent win over Swansea they managed to keep a clean sheet for the first time since August.

However, Hull have the advantage of a new manager whose tactics are not yet familiar to their opponents. They also go into this match with high morale, having had a rousing victory under their belt.

This season, Hull have already managed to show their character to the Manchester club, when in the Premier League match the Red Devils were able to snatch victory only thanks to a goal from Marcos Rashford in the 90th minute of the match.

Match report

The Devils reach the Cup semi-finals English League didn't surprise anyone. In the end, similar things happened under Moyes, and with much smaller transfer injections. Another thing is the presence of Hull City at this stage, which will have to play the Mancunians three times in January. Naturally, only time will tell whether Phelan's resignation was a justified and considered decision or will turn into one of the typical good intentions with which the road to the lower divisions is usually paved, however, it seems that Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant required significantly less effort to prepare the team for the match at studied the length and breadth of Old Trafford.

New head coach The Tigers were not afraid to take charge of a club struggling in the Premier League and, among other things, faced huge problems in defense. Thus, United almost opened the scoring in the 2nd minute of the match with a simple attack with a pass along the left and edge and a “cross” to the central zone in front of the visitors’ penalty area. And if Yakupovich had not shown miracles of reaction and coordination, Mata could well have brought the scenario of the recent match against Reading closer to reality.

Hull City's hastily assembled defense, of course, lacked a number of techniques to contain the Devils' constant advance. For example, an “artificial” offside, the impossibility of which increased the external impression of the overwhelming superiority of the Mancunians. Meanwhile, by the end of the half-hour of the meeting, there were not enough truly exciting moments in the Tigers’ possessions. Yes, the guests were pressing hard against their own goal, but Yakupović did not at all fly from post to post, pulling out dead balls, and Pogba had a killer chance for the reason that the expensive Frenchman himself, wittingly or unwittingly, contributed to the temporary minority of Silva’s charges, who lost the Norwegian Henriksen in a violent collision and forced to wait for referee Friend's permission to make an unscheduled substitution.

With equal strengths, Hull City gradually corrected their seemingly hopeless position. And closer to the break, the “tigers” already had a couple of dangerous “forays” into De Gea’s penalty area, the most serious of which involved Adama Diamande, who tried to “visually”, in opposition to the Spanish goalkeeper, head the ball into the “bottom” corner. However, even in the event of a goal, and not hitting the side post, United would have avoided the fate of starting from the center of the field, since the line judge did not understand the complex dynamics of the episode, taking the side of the Mancunians, despite the ricochet from the back of Smalling who jumped out .

And it is characteristic that 25 minutes later the same referee again “played along” with the “devils”. Before this, Rooney had an excellent chance to score without any controversial issues, but from Pogba’s “throw” the home captain shot just to the left of the “far” corner. United’s advantage seemed to be beyond doubt, but again they failed to score a “clean” goal: Friend and his assistants did not pay due attention to Mkhitaryan’s push into the defender’s back, which facilitated either a pass or a header from the Armenian and a slight offside of the little one. Mats, who still managed to drive the “projectile” into the net with the “left” (!) from a meter to the target.

Hull City seemed to pass the ball well throughout the match, but in the final stage they acted extremely toothlessly, as if the forwards did not exist on the field, and simply missed two half-opportunities. The Mancunians sought to increase the score, but taking into account the selection of players, they should have created many more chances in Jakupovic's possession than Pogba's shot into the post from a free kick.

Under Portuguese coaching staff Mate, apparently, is not destined to have a full-fledged match with United. It’s hard to do without a healthy and hefty Fellaini, especially with a minimal score - you never know what she’s capable of throwing worst team Premier League. Today, Snodgrass was catastrophically unsuccessful in his crosses, which means that the Tigers lost their last attacking option, and, consequently, the curly-haired Belgian got the chance not only to work in his own penalty area, but also to visit someone else’s. In the 87th minute, the Devils' number 27 responded to the throw and, remembering the striker skills instilled by Louis Van Gaal, pushed in the Mancunians' second goal from the "second floor", leaving Hull City with very illusory hopes for the final.

The first one will take place on Tuesday evening. semi-final match League Cup between Manchester United and Hull City, which will be played at Old Trafford.

One step away from Wembley

United fans love visiting the national stadium, which we have visited twice in the past year - the FA Cup final and the FA Super Cup.

The team did not win the League Cup again until 1992, and have lifted the trophy four times since then - last time it happened seven years ago.

Jose Mourinho has openly stated that he wants to fight for every possible trophy.

What path have we covered?

Mourinho's team began their journey with a match against Northampton Town, playing in the First Football League, coming into the match after three losses in a row. United bounced back from this disappointing run to beat their opponents 3-1 at Sixfields.

Then the Red Devils had to play against a neighboring team located five kilometers from Old Trafford. At that time, Pep Guardiola's team showed an almost flawless start to the season and led the Premier League standings, but Juan Mata's goal was enough to defeat their sworn enemies and advance to the next round.

In the quarter-finals, United played against the Hammers, with whom they had to play two games over three days - first a Premier League match was played, which ended in a 1-1 draw, and then Mourinho's men left no chance for the opponent, winning by 4 -1.

Team news

After the FA Cup match against Reading, Jose Mourinho revealed that Antonio Valencia, Paul Pogba, Ander Herrera and Zlatan Ibrahimovic will start the match starting lineup. The team will soon have an important match against Liverpool, but the Portuguese promised to approach the match against the Tigers fully armed.

David de Gea could return to the squad even as Sergio Romero continues to produce astonishing performances - conceding just one goal in five matches this season, and that was a penalty against Northampton.

Luke Shaw was supposed to take the field, but, according to the latest data, the Englishman has caught a cold and is unlikely to be able to help the team. Marcos Rojo's participation in the match remains in doubt, and Eric Bailly is also out of the game, as the Ivorian defender is with his national team.

As for the opponents, Michael Dawson was forced to leave during the last match, whose injury could add to the headache for the team's head coach, who has not a single healthy nominal center back left in the hospital.

Robert Snodgrass remains the most important player Hull City are in midfield despite an offer from West Ham that was quickly rejected.

Meanwhile, Everton striker Oumar Niasse, who scored against United in a reserves game earlier this season, has been linked with a move to the KC Stadium and the move could be completed in the near future.

Changes in the opponent's camp

Last week former coach United's Mike Phelan has been sacked as Hull City manager despite the team having completed the previous four League Cup stages under his leadership. New Tigers manager Marco Silva has already been dubbed the 'new Mourinho' after his side beat Swansea 2-0 in their FA Cup third round tie last Saturday.

How did we play against Hull in the last match?

We managed to win the away match right at the end of the match, when Marcus Rashford, who came on as a substitute in the second half, completed Wayne Rooney's cross and ran to share the joy of victory with the away fans in that August rain.

Do we have a series against Hull coming up?

Yes, and let's hope that the draw for the 4th round of the FA Cup does not bring us together again. And, if the cards fall like this, then a funny calendar awaits us - a home match against Hull City in the League Cup, then a home Premier League match against Liverpool, a trip to Stoke City and then three matches in a row against the Tigers. !

Former players United in opposition

James Ware is regularly included in the team's squad, but he was only given playing time in the League Cup match. Also playing for the Tigers are Will Keane and former player youth team Alex Bruce, but both players are currently in the hospital.

Mourinho knows Marco Silva

“I know the new Hull City manager very well,” said Jose. "He's a smart guy and of course he will try to achieve good result with your team. But we want to make it to the finals."

In the third round of the English Premier League, Manchester United beat Hull City away.

Jose Mourinho's team put incredible pressure on the opponent's defensive formations and were able to snatch three points in the second added minute. The winning goal Marcus Rashford scored for the Red Devils.

August 27. Kingston Communications Stadium (Kingston upon Hull).

The clash between Hull City and Manchester United on Saturday night was a source of great interest. Both teams reached the third round without any points losses, while demonstrating very high-quality football in the past two games. This should be the norm for the Red Devils, but the Tigers pleasantly surprised fans of the English Premier League. Another interesting detail is the confrontation between Mike Phelan and Manchester United. The acting coach of Hull played for the Mancunians for many years, and also worked on the coaching staff side by side with Alex Ferguson.

Mike Phelan, as expected, made no changes to Hull City's starting XI from the previous two matches. Jose Mourinho also made no changes compared to the game against Southampton. It seems that the pair of central defenders Eric Bailly - Daley Blind completely suits the Portuguese coach, and Chris Smalling needs to try hard in training to win the competition.

The game in Kingston upon Hull took place in pouring rain, which could not but have an impact on what was happening. Take, for example, the episode when Robert Snodgrass rolled on a slippery lawn and drove straight into the post. One of the Hull City leaders received assistance for a few minutes, fortunately everything turned out okay. The audience saw the first more or less dangerous moment in the 10th minute. Anthony Martial threw the ball into the center of the penalty area, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic hung over Curtis Davis and headed it over the crossbar.

Manchester United had the advantage, but the Hull City players acted without fear and tried to attack at the first best opportunity. Around the 25th minute, Robert Snodgrass took a good free kick - the ball flew just to the right of the frame. Soon, Andrew Robertson from the left flank made an accentuated pass to the far post, but Snodgrass, in the fight with Shaw, did not shoot properly, after which he flew into the post, as we have already discussed.

Perhaps the most best moment in the first half it appeared at the Tigers' goal closer to the break. Juan Mata took advantage of the Hull City defender's slip on the wet pitch. The Spaniard struck from the right edge of the penalty area - Eldin Jakupovic hit the ball into the center with his hand. Wayne Rooney immediately shot from close range, and the hosts' goalkeeper could no longer help his team. The Tigers were lucky because the game shot hit Curtis Davis. The Manchester United players thought the Hull captain was playing with his hand, but Jonathan Moss did the right thing by not awarding a penalty.

Robert Snodgrass came out for the second half with a limp. The Hull City midfielder was able to play just a minute after the break - a collision with the post in the first half did not pass without leaving a mark on the footballer. Manchester United continued to have the initiative, playing the ball for a long time in the opposing half of the field. But all this happened mainly without progress, because the hosts held the defense in an organized manner. Jose Mourinho, already at the end of an hour of playing time, decided to release Henrikh Mkhitaryan onto the field.

Time passed, and Manchester United could not penetrate the layered defense of Hull City. In the 72nd minute, the visitors demanded a penalty from Jonathan Moss, but the referee did not see a handball from Meyler after a flank pass from Valencia. With fifteen minutes left in regulation, the Tigers nearly scored. Tom Huddlestone struck from outside the penalty area, David de Gea was caught on the counter after a significant rebound from Eric Bailly, but the ball flew to the right of the frame!

In the 79th minute, Marcus Rashford could have become the hero of the Red Devils. The young forward rolled the ball into the right corner from outside the penalty area, but Eldin Jakupovic saved the Tigers. Then Paul Pogba fired a sharp cross from the right into the goalkeeper's area, and the hosts averted the threat with some difficulty. Then Henrikh Mkhitaryan found himself in a lethal position, but Curtis Davis, who rushed under the attack, saved Hull City. Even the television viewers could feel the incredible tension on the pitch in Kingston upon Hull. In the second minute of stoppage time, Manchester United still snatched three points. Wayne Rooney left El-Muhamadi on the left and crossed into the goalkeeper's area, where Rashford turned out to be the most agile.

Manchester United snatched a victory away from Hull City and continues to go without losses.

A 1-2 defeat was enough for Manchester United to reach the League Cup final. At the end of February, the Mancunians will meet at Wembley with Southampton, who knocked Liverpool out of the tournament the day before.

The application for today's match aroused genuine interest. Snodgrass and Martial were not here. The latter had a falling out with Mourinho and could be put up for transfer. And Snodgrass's fate has already been decided - the Hull leader has gone to West Ham. The Scot's place was taken by Oumar Niasse, who was loaned to the Tigers from Everton until the end of the season. Another star newcomer, Lazar Markovic, remained on the bench. All the main players took to the field for the visitors. Rooney remained on the bench, while Rashford and Lingard played from the opening minutes. You can also note the Portuguese derby on the coaching bridge between Mourinho and Da Silva, who is starting his journey in the English championship.

Today I stood in front of Hull difficult task: score at least twice and not miss. To do this, it was necessary to act extremely reliably in front of one’s own goal and be careful about opportunities in someone else’s penalty area. In the first half, the “tigers” managed to play on two fronts. The hosts took the initiative and already in the 11th minute forced De Gea to show his excellent reaction. First, Sam Clucas shot dangerously from a set piece, and then Oumar Niasse shot at the goalkeeper from the goal line, but was unable to beat the goal.

And yet, in the 34th minute, Hull took a step towards the coveted final, getting even with one goal. Moss awarded a highly controversial penalty for Maguire's demolition. Huddlestone, who approached the point, confidently converted the set-piece and put his team ahead, 1-0!

Manchester United had to wake up. Almost immediately, Ibrahimovic could have equalized the score. The Swede received the ball after a successful rebound, ran towards someone else's penalty area and, getting close to the defenders, delivered a treacherous shot into the right corner. Marshall pulled himself to attention and made a truly heroic rescue.

After the break, the “devils” got down to business in earnest. The Hull defense had to withstand a real assault. For the time being, the “tigers” managed, but the 66th minute became fatal for them. Huddlestone unsuccessfully knocked the ball out from under Rashford, passing right to Pogba, the Frenchman sent the ball into Maguire's house with a light poke and scored his first goal in this tournament, 1-1!

Now Hull had only a slim chance of reaching the final. Soon the hosts could have found themselves in the role of winning back, but the ball hit the crossbar after Rojo's shot. Hull also hit the crossbar. And in the 85th minute, Hull, through the efforts of Niasse, was able to score a second goal, but it was no longer enough to qualify for the final of the tournament.

Hull looked very good today and deservedly won (for the first time since 1974). Unfortunately, Silva was not yet in the team for the first match. Maybe then everything would have turned out differently. Now Manchester United will play Southampton at Wembley on February 26, while Hull will focus on maintaining their place in the elite division.
