Artistic gymnastics European championship qualification results. The Russian artistic gymnastics team won the Romanian European Championships in the team event

The World Championships in Montreal became the first major tournament of the new Olympic cycle, a kind of initial stage of preparation for the 2020 Olympics. Before the start of the competition, the senior coach of the Russian national team emphasized this Valentina Rodionenko: “Our tasks are as follows: just don’t flinch and perform. This is the first such serious start of the Olympic cycle, everyone is looking closely at each other. This is like a foundation for the coming years.”

The composition of the national team fully corresponded to the speeches of the coaching staff: there were many new faces in the team. And if Nikita Ignatiev gymnastics fans remembered from their excellent performance at the European Games in Baku, then Sergey Eltsov And Arthur Dalaloyan This is the first time we have reached such a high international level. There were new faces in the women's team: Melnikova and Paseka, proven by the Olympics, joined the Canadian tournament Elena Eremina And Anastasia Ilyankova, ready to surprise the audience.

Looking at the updated squad and remembering the controversial 2015 World Championships, where the Russian men did not win a single medal, and the women won three titles at once, the national team coaches abandoned all kinds of plans and forecasts: “No medal plans are needed here, God forbid,” – Valentina Rodionenko noted shortly before the start of the tournament.

The composition of the Russian national team at the 2017 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships

Victory for the President

The men clearly did not want to remain at the World Championships without awards, like two years ago. Having missed their chance in the all-around, the Russians planned to win back in certain events. Fortunately, we managed to qualify for five out of six finals. Unfortunately, Arthur Dalaloyan It was not possible to surprise the judges and spectators in the vault, but the more experienced gymnasts did what they do well. won silver in the pommel horse and bronze on the uneven bars, leaving behind only the Olympic champions in these disciplines. It is worth noting that for David these medals were the first at the world championships in seven years of his performances, and he won his third award - silver on the rings. And this time the Russian athlete lost to the Olympic champion, the Greek Petrunias, who has won all competitions for the third year in a row.

In the solid collection of medals, there was also a place for gold. , specializing in vault, managed to defend her world champion title in her favorite discipline. It is curious that the gymnast dedicated her victory to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who was celebrating his next birthday on October 7. Surely the leader of the country was happy for Elena Eremina, who on the same day added silver on uneven bars to her all-around bronze. Anastasia Ilyankova was close to also climbing the podium, but, losing a little more than one tenth of a point to the Belgian Derval, she ended up in fourth place.

Repeating the record

As a result, the Russian team won six awards, repeating the best result of the decade shown in 2010, 2011 and 2014. In Canada, only the Chinese received the same number of awards, and no one else could. Such a start to the new Olympic cycle can only be encouraging. It is especially pleasant that new stars are shining in the Russian team: I want to believe that Eremina and Ilyankova will only improve over time. The same applies to the young team in the men’s team, even if they didn’t perform very well in Montreal.

However, the tournament in Canada will leave not only pleasant memories. The fact is that many athletes, coaches and heads of delegations had questions for the competition organizers, who, for the sake of television, did not give the athletes enough time to try out the equipment - hence the many mistakes and damages. Valentina Rodionenko noted that the World Championships in Montreal will go down in history as the tournament with the largest number of injuries among athletes. Fortunately, the Russian team was spared these misadventures, but due to injury, for example, the three-time Olympic champion dropped out of the fight Kohei Uchimura, preparing to compete for another couple of awards.

Olympic medalists Belyavsky, Nagorny, Melnikova and Spiridonova are in the Russian team’s entry at the Romanian European Championship
The European Artistic Gymnastics Championships will take place on April 19-23 in Cluj (Romania). The Russian team's entry includes 10 athletes - six men and four women. The Russian team will be led by four 2016 Olympic medalists - David Belyavsky, Nikita Nagorny, Angelina Melnikova and Daria Spiridonova. The preliminary application of the Russian national team is provided by the All Sport Agency.

The World Artistic Gymnastics Championships started in Montreal, Canada - the first in the four-year cycle of preparation for the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2020. This is an important enough start for athletes to strive to show their maximum, but at the same time the Games are still far enough away for young people to be tested at this tournament. Two-time Olympic champion and honored coach of the USSR Lidia Ivanova even called the upcoming world championship “reconnaissance in force.”

“The competition at this championship will be very serious, as always. Moreover, we passed the Olympics last year, and this championship will be of particular interest to the national team coaches and those responsible for the development of our team, in order to conduct reconnaissance in force,” R-Sport quotes.

“We need to widen our eyes, open them wide and study what our competitors are preparing - we have always had and will have many of them.

We always need to push back and try to demonstrate advanced gymnastics to some extent.”

This is what the coaching staff of the Russian national team did. The maximum possible team composition went to Canada - six men and four representatives of the fair sex. As part of the “testing” of the younger generation, David Belyavsky, Denis Ablyazin, Nikita Nagorny and Arthur, who had already proven their skills, were joined by 20-year-old Sergei Eltsov, who had never competed at this level before, limiting himself to participation in the Russian Championship and the National Cup.

“Sergei has excellent parallel bars - he won them at the last Russian Cup, and the high bar is also good.

He is also strong in pommel horse exercise. We, the coaches, are especially pleased that we have someone to choose from when determining the composition of the national team,” this is how the senior coach of the Russian national team commented on the choice of young Eltsov.

It was decided that the national team debutant would perform in the uneven bars and pommel horse exercises. In the traditionally difficult individual all-around event, the country was represented by Belyavsky and, who won silver medals at Rio 2016 in the team competition. In the floor exercises, the honor of Russia was entrusted to the 20-year-old Dalaloyan, who made his mark relatively recently, in the spring of 2017, when he performed brilliantly at the European Championships in Romania, winning silver in the all-around and gold in the vault. Five-time Olympic medalist Ablyazin had to show himself on the rings, and Ignatiev - on the horizontal bar.

As for the female composition of the Russian national team, difficulties arose. Initially, only two candidates were clear - the 17-year-old (silver at Rio 2016) and the 16-year-old, who performed successfully at the last European Championship, taking second place there. The remaining two places were vacant.

It was impossible to count on the main star of Russian artistic gymnastics in recent years, Aliya Mustafina: she is just getting into shape after giving birth and will have time to return, at the very least, to the Russian Championships 2018.

As a result, the coaching staff decided to test the strength of 18-year-old Anastasia Ilyankova, who took first place on the uneven bars at the Summer Russian Cup. The girl accelerated her recovery from an old spinal injury, which suddenly made itself felt three weeks before the World Cup, and still came to Montreal.

The last place in the lineup was filled by the experienced Maria Paseka, who was given a chance to make amends for her failure at the Summer Universiade. It is in this composition that our girls will soon enter the fight for awards in the vault, floor exercises, as well as in competitions on the uneven bars and balance beam.

In total, about 500 participants from 80 countries arrived in Canada, but now the competition has begun only for men - they are in the midst of qualifying for the finals.

Of the Russians, Belyavsky is currently performing best, taking third place in the individual all-around qualification, scoring 85.839 points after completing six exercises. David easily qualified for the finals of the competition, which will take place on the night of October 5-6, Moscow time. The Russian also reached the finals in exercises on individual apparatus - high bar (14.208 points), uneven bars (15.066) and pommel horse (14.666).

“I’m very pleased with Belyavsky and the fact that we returned him to the all-around,” said Valery Alfosov, senior coach of the Russian men’s artistic gymnastics team. — 2018 is our qualifying year, we will try to get a license for the Olympic Games, and all-around athletes will be worth their weight in gold.

We are very pleased with Belyavsky’s performance today. On Europa he only made two shells, but now he’s already making six, it was a big step.”

Russia's second representative in the all-around, Nagorny, unexpectedly failed, taking only tenth place in the qualifications with 82.598 points, but still has a chance to advance to the decisive stage of the competition: the 24 best gymnasts get there, but we still need to wait for the performance of the last group of participants.

“Nagorny, the winner of the Russian Cup, was the best prepared for the tournament, but he absolutely failed. Of course, we are unhappy with his performance, very unfortunate. Nikita grabbed his back after an unsuccessful landing on the vault? There is no injury. When you don’t know what to say, grab your back as if it hurts,” commented on the performances of the gymnast Alfosov, who in general is not very happy with the way the World Championships are going.

— The performances of the gymnasts were uninteresting - neither the Chinese, nor the Japanese, nor the Americans, nor the British, nor ours. There are a lot of falls, a lot of injuries.”

Dalaloyan also did not perform very well, showing only the ninth result (14.683) on the vault. He definitely doesn’t make it to the finals, since only the top eight athletes are allowed there. In floor exercises, the Russians will also not be able to compete for a medal - Belyavsky showed the highest result, and this was 15th place (13.933). Unfortunately, young Eltsov has not yet been able to show himself in all his glory, taking only 14th place in the uneven bars exercise and 54th on the pommel horse.

“We also brought new gymnasts to Montreal, Eltsov. There was no task before him.

He is the champion of the Russian Cup, they brought him for sporting reasons, they wanted to see how he could psychologically withstand this whole gymnastics “mess”. Let’s see how the judges perceive him, he’s an interesting guy, we’re also planning him for Tokyo 2020. Dalaloyan also couldn’t show his level, which is also a shame,” Alfosov complained.

The only truly positive moment - besides Belyavsky's brilliant performance - was Ablyazin's second place in the rings exercises (15.333), thanks to which he confidently qualified for the finals. You can cheer for him on October 7 and 8, when the decisive stages of the competition in individual events will take place.

All-around. Men.

In the men's all-around, Russian Artur Dalaloyan won silver with a total of 85.498 points. In the fight for gold, Ukrainian Oleg Vernyaev was ahead of Dalaloyan by 0.368 points. Briton James Hall won bronze, and Russian Nikita Ignatiev stopped one step away from the podium.

All-around. Women.

15-year-old Elena Eremina took fourth place in the all-around. Britain's Elissa Downey won, Hungary's Zsofia Kovacs was second, and France's Melanie De Jesus Dos Santos was third. Another representative of Russia, Natalya Kapitonova, finished ninth.

The coaching staff of the Russian national team is outraged by the judging of the women's all-around at the Championship.

“Absolutely incomprehensible decisions were made that deprived Elena Eremina of bronze,” senior coach of the national team Valentina Rodionenko told reporters: “We were outraged by the way the three leaders were judged at the end of the competition, when they could not decide who took third place. Here they show Eremin that she won bronze, and then suddenly she was dropped to fourth place. This outraged us terribly. We still cannot understand what happened there. The Frenchwoman who eventually took bronze came out of nowhere. She was nowhere close. She failed the bars, failed the beam, and then ended up in third place.

We thought about it and did not file a protest; there are still competitions on individual apparatus ahead. There is no use arguing with the judges. If we sum up the performance of our girls in the all-around, today Eremina did what she was capable of. The only thing is that she had no right to make mistakes on the balance beam. The same applies to Kapitonova. But for the first start at such serious competitions as the European Championships, this is quite normal.”

Rodionenko also emphasized that the Russians’ mistakes on the beam will be a separate topic for analysis: “The only thing that didn’t suit us was their falls from the beam. But this will be a separate topic for analysis. Otherwise, the girls did what they needed to do. They have better marks on bars, decent floor exercises.”
